  • Completing Zelda Skyward Sword HD is the final 3D Zelda game I have completed for the channel! When it first released on the Nintendo Wii, most criticism of the game was dominated by the divisive opinions on the motion controls. Now that Skyward Sword is released on the Nintendo Switch and you can control the sword with the right thumbstick, it feels like a nice reset for the game. Let's see how this revamp of the game plays in my Skyward Sword HD review!

      I honestly feel the game is best experienced with motion controls. The control stick works, but I found in finicky when trying to do more precise swordplay. The bamboo mini game becomes problematic since the spin attack is mapped to a quick back and forth motion on the control stick, causing me to spin attack when I’m trying to just swing back and forth. Ghirahim and Demise are similarly problematic since they follow your sword and you’re supposed to lead them with one way and attack from another direction. I find it harder to do that since the slashes are mapped to control stick flicks, so I sometimes slash when I’m trying to just move my sword to the opposite side. That’s just my personal experience, of course.

      @@pokemonduck Link and Zelda have romantic relationships in many of the zelda games.
      Skyward sword: they re populate the earth and start the royal family. How do you know? Well besides the fact that Link and Zelda are the only 2 people that live on the surface and vow to watch over the triforce together. The Hylian royal family crest is Hylia's wings in Links crimson loftwing color, this symbolizes the union of 2 people into a new family crest. There's a reason why all the Zelda's have powers and that's because they inherit the blood of the Goddess, meaning Skyward Sword Zelda had children and it should be obvious who she'd do that with if you play the game. Not to mention there aren't any humans on the surface anymore, Skyloftians are the only humans left and even Groose leaves to go back to Skyloft once Impa dies. The ending of the game heavily implies it's just Link and Zelda on the surface.
      Link to the past: A Link between worlds rumor guy says the princess wants to be just like the princess in the past who had a relationship with her knight, confirming that ALTTP zelda and Link became a couple.
      Link between worlds zelda probably ends up with her Link because of this.
      Oracle games: Link and Zelda interact with hearts above their heads(these 2 are most likely the same Link and zelda from ALTTP)
      Links awakening: the same LInk from the oracle games, Link is shown to care and think about Zelda while on the island. It could even be said since Link is sharing the windfish's dream that Malon is Links manifestation of his feelings for Zelda, you know just like how Links final enemy is Ganon that comes purely from his mind/nightmares.
      Wind waker and phantom hourglass: Spirit tracks tells us of the new Hyrule/land mass created by Tetra, who else would she have babies with?
      Spirit tracks: Link and Zelda hold hands at the end of the game.
      Zelda 2 the adventure of Link: the sleeping princess zelda kisses Link as the curtain closes.
      BOTW: There's way too many confirmations in that game that Zelda loves Link but see NintendoBlackCrisis BOTW Zelink videos for that.

    This game was my introduction to the Zelda franchise when I was about 8. I beat the game and never had major issues with the motion controls on the Wii. I thought the game looked beautiful, the characters were near perfect, the story was endearing, and the music was a cut above the rest, but then again I didn't really have much of a frame of reference back then. I was ecstatic when the remaster was announced, but also worried that the only reason I liked the game was nostalgia. Boy was I wrong. The artstyle is still one of my favorites. The newly polished models look incredible, making my jaw drop at some of the more cinematic cutscenes. I love that button controls were included, but motion will always be my preferred play style because it felt so much better and nearly every input was read correctly. I had forgotten how much I loved the game's soundtrack, as well as the relationship between Zelda and Link, as well as all of the citizens of Skyloft. The dungeons in this game are some of my favorite in the series, with Lanayru Mines and Sandship being my personal favorites. This remaster was what I needed to make myself realize that this is my all time favorite Zelda game.

It’s arguably the most story focused game in the series with Zelda being much more developed and Link being much more expressive, therefore more personality. The dungeon designs are some of the best in the series. And aside from the motion controls, I think most of the common complaints about this game can be said about most of the Zelda games.

I got it for Christmas in 2011 and I did never beat it sadly, mainly because I'm left handed and Nintendo does not know how to make motion control games for left handed people. So I always thought the combat was difficult for me, and I had always struggled with motion controls in general, but I'm excited to get this version with the stick controls so I can actually beat it this time, altho to be fair I can literally beat it right now because I beat the skyview temple and got to where you fight demise, but the next day I did that they announced it coming to the switch , so I'll just wait to get it on the Switch. Nintendo's relationship with the "Official Zelda Timeline" is rather wishy-washy. At the time the original Skyward Sword came out, they took the Timeline very seriously.
    Every art piece and dialog bit in Skyward Sword was directly connected to the Hyrule Historia book, which was released around the same time.
    Some time later, when Breath of the Wild came out, the Timeline was all but abandoned. The official stance was "It's the end of all three timeline branches" and the multi-branch references were downgraded to just "legends".
    If the rumours are true that Breath of the Wild 2 is strongly connected to Skyward Sword, I hope that also means that Nintendo will return to taking the Timeline more seriously. Most fans love the Timeline, as do I.

    • @BloodRedFox2008
      @BloodRedFox2008 Před 2 lety +16

      I feel like either Aonuma or Miyamoto said once they felt mild regret at confirming a definitive timeline because it "made things more restrictive for the narrative," which might be why BotW just went "don't worry about the timeline now, we'll deal with it whenever." I can see what they mean because I recall when former Castlevania producer Koji Igarashi said he regretted confirming a definitive timeline for the Castlevania series because now he felt like some of his more "out there" ideas wouldn't fit in with established lore (dude already had to retcon a few games out of the timeline for the sake of others, like Legends was made non-canon when Lament of Innocence was developed as the official beginning of the timeline, and the N64 games became a case of "maybe they happened, maybe they didn't, I don't know").

    • @pokemonduck
      @pokemonduck Před 2 lety +6

      Nintendo has never ever taken the Zelda timeline seriously, they will retcon it forever to keep adding more games. They only seemingly took it seriously around Skyward Sword's release in order to make people buy the Hyrule Historia. People aren't going to buy your timeline book if you say the timeline is useless.
      The series is called the LEGEND of Zelda. It is basically the same tale told over and over again with different variants appearing over the ages. Sometimes it is set in a land, sometimes it is set in the sea, sometimes it is set in the sky, but there are always the recurring elements of the hero, the princess and the villain. Like in real life there are many similar variants of myths and legends. The series is not called ''The Thoroughly-Documented Chronicles of Zelda''!

    • @Christopher-md7tf
      @Christopher-md7tf Před 2 lety +1

      The timeline is a complete mess because it was never a priority when developing these games. HH was only made to please obsessive-compulsive superfans, who are the only people who care about this stuff. Everybody else just plays the games, has fun, and then gets on with their lives.
      IMO, the series would even be better off without the timeline. As another comment mentioned, it's restrictive for the devs, and it's also confusing for newcomers to the series. They learn about some "official timeline" and get excited about an ongoing story, only to learn that it's a complete shit-show and not at all what they expected.

    Great video, made me rethink my opinion on Skyward Sword and the fact it's been remastered. I played it and completed it back then on wii, and I had no trouble whatsoever with the motion controls. In fact, I loved them. Still, just something as stupid as not seeing time pass in Skyloft, not being able to start flying at dawn and see the sunset while flying... seems stupid but that alone broke the world's unity to me, which was so powerful in Ocarina, and even more in Twilight Princess.
    Still, it's a great game, with lots of work put in it and it's also a Zelda game, it has the power of a world we've been playing in for decades, in which for many just seeing a heart piece awakens all kinds of memories.
    No matter how you look at it though, the big elephant in the room are not the controls in my opinion, its the 60$ (same with Mario HD).

  • @Pascll
    @Pascll Před 2 lety +4

    I feel like the stick controls aren't necessarily faster. I mean, with motion controls, it was just as easy to attack super fast by just wildly swinging the controller around, or quickly flicking your wrist. in fact, I'd say that quickly attacking from multiple directions and performing spin attacks might just be a little easier with motion controls (especially the former, though I guess it's not very important).
    either way, the stick controls are great. I've always loved the game, played through the HD version with stick controls, probably loved it even more than I already did.

    I got skyward sword with the golden Wii remote and the soundtrack. Though I enjoyed the game, I didn't have much of a desire to play through it a second time. With this HD re-release I find this game to be even better and I'm glad I picked it up again. I have already played through normal mode and I plan to play through hero mode later this year.

    • @zilvertron
      @zilvertron Před 2 lety +3

      Good for you. Every time I use the bug it wishes to go to the side of the screen. Every time I try flying with it I have to swing my way forward instead of flying in a straight line because the controls simply won't let me. Twist the items and slot them in the hole is a nightmare with motion control.
      Fly the bird is an experience, and not a fun one since the game doesn't properly explain how to fly. Half the game I had no chance going from the ground to the clouds and back to Skyloft, was suffering just about the clouds until the bird decides to dive and hide.
      My sword swings are doing 1 thing, while i keep swinging my joycon from side to side, and never lets it me doing what I'm trying to do. When I've done the story I ain't touching the game anymore, the controls are simply just too bad.

      95% of the time when people complain about motion controls, it's because their technique is bad.

      This is a remaster, not a remake at all. Remake is entirely different concept/project/effort. Remasters are almost always better than their originals, the whole point is to "upgrade" existing software.

    I'm playing this game for the first time (never had a Wii). And personally I'm liking the motion controls. Sometimes it's a little clunky (like when I need to point down while flying or to roll bombs), but it works fine when you get used (I'm totally in love with the beetle item). And as you pointed, the option is everything: I was having trouble maneuvering Link to land at a certain point to hit a Godess Cube, so I switched to button only controls and voi lá! Managed to get it.

    I remember when it came out. I didn't get it because I didn't have a Wii at that time. When I finally got to play it I loved what I played but I never finished it as it was borrowed from the library. And my now ex wife spoiled it for me getting mad at me for playing it when she wasn't around. It's good to hear I might have a remastered version of it to play when I finally get a switch again.
    Thank you Jirard.

    I love the Zelda franchise though I haven’t played many of the titles since I didn’t always have a Nintendo console. My wife and I just recently bought ourselves a Nintendo Switch and Skyward Sword was my first Switch game that I bought. I just finished it and I gotta say I loved every bit of it. Everything from story and characters to the gameplay. This video nailed everything about Skyward Sword so you should definitely consider picking up the game if you haven’t played it and own a Switch.

    On the other hand, it's Spirit Tracks, so most people tend to forget it exists.

    Gotta say I hated this game on the Wii and never played it since. It was always my least favorite 3D Zelda Game. This was due to the awful forced motion controls and the outdated blurry visuals on the wii.
    Now I bought the remaster and played with buttons only. After completing it I have to say I loved the experience from start to finish, love the story, the characters, the dungeons. Without the things I hated getting in the way I really saw this game for what it was supposed to be. An excellent Zelda game. So glad I decided to buy it.
