The fact this game wad the first to introduce towns, magic, sword techniques, jumping, shadow link, as well as various enemies. Makes it a defining game within the franchise
Completely agree.
It took 36 seconds until the phrase “black sheep” was mentioned
This is a Zelda II video alright
Every video, man...
@@LupinticDream Metroid 2, Zelda 2, Super Mario Bros 2….
Why is it always the second one lol
@@JJGamezMC Because at that point a formula isn't established, so they change some things and keep others the same (more so than usual)
I know they're not canon, but the CD-i Zelda games are more black sheep than Zelda 2 is.
@@JJGamezMC the worst part is Metroid 2 is amazing, and Samus Returns takes all its good aspects and chucks them in the trash
If it wasn’t for this one, we wouldn’t have the Downward Thrust.
This one is crucial.
There's a ton of stuff Zelda 2 introduced that carried on through most of the games. Names, like Ruto town became a species in Windwaker, boots became the winged one from ocarina of time, reflect spell turned into the mirror shield, the hammer was in Z2 first, lizalfos were first here, ect, ect, ect. People need to show some respect.
@@EmilyRose900 Ruto is Princess Ruto from Ocarina of Time. The bird species is called the Rito. Each of the sages from OoT have a town named after them in Zelda 2. Ruto Town is named after the Zora Princess.
Or towns. Or magic. Or the Triforce of Courage. Or adult Link. Or Dark Link. Or non-Ganon villains. Or realms outside of Hyrule proper. Or the sword-focused combat of later Zeldas like Ocarina of Time (which was at one point in its development meant to be a remake of Z2, which is why stalkids don’t spawn if you stay on the path in Hyrule Field).
Hey, the downward thrust... you think Link tried that with the woman who “healed” him in the villages? Wink* Wink* Nudge* Nudge*
@@Dyundu this is the first i'm hearing it was going to be a remake. I know the very earliest tests of the engine recreated a dungeon and enemies from Zelda _1_ is that what you meant? The path thing is interesting though, I definitely never noticed that. no wonder it always seemed like as soon as I made a decision to go somewhere, suddenly they pop up.
“Zelda II is the worst Zelda game”
So we’re just gonna ignore the CDI games? I’m fine with that.
Pretty certain most people and Nintendo prefer to pretend those games don't exist because they are just that bad.
What's a CDI?
Sounds like a terrible idea.
Of course we ignore them! Why would anyone want to acknowledge their existence?
They aren’t ignored. They don’t count, they weren’t worked on by Nintendo.
Hahah I love your post 🙏
Real Talk: That Dungeon Theme is STILL a banger 🥰
Better than the repetitive dungeon music in the first game, too. Yeah, I said it.
Zelda 2 was on the Collector’s Edition because the idea was to make every Zelda game to date playable on Gamecube (The GBA version of ALttP was playable via the gameboy player). iirc it actually said this outright in one of the retrospectives on the collection itself.
I really want to see a remake of this game now.
Agreed.
If Nintendo could remake Metroid 2 into the vast improvement that was Samus Returns on the 3DS; Imagine what they could do with the original Zeldas on the Switch.
Yeah it could really use the metroid two treatment
Remake it as a metroidvania
@@ThisJordo Yes. Especially if they expand on the combat
Fun Fact: There *WAS* an attempt to remake The Adventure Of Link back in the mid-90's.
The project eventually changed direction toward becoming a new game instead.
This new Zelda game was none other than Ocarina Of Time.
Bonus Fact: The AoL Remake Project that became OoT wasn't the first time a revisit of an old project led to a new game that has become iconic. Not long after A Link To The Past was released, an idle project was formed from the idea of porting ALttP to the GameBoy. This resulted in the development of Link's Awakening.
Furthermore, it wasn't the last time either. When Capcom wanted to make some Zelda games after the turn of the millennium, one of their pitches was a remake of the first game, The Hyrule Fantasy.
Eventually, when the plan to make Seed Of The Wonder Tree into a trilogy fell through, the remake of the first game was revamped and released as Oracle Of Seasons.

Don't you dare forget to upload your hour long video you announced half a year ago.
Defend It returns! Kinda! I was legit curious how he was gonna handle this one and I’m happy he’s doing it as a Defend It again.
I'll be honest, I've only gotten into the Zelda series recently and I'm very disappointed to see that Nintendo never did another installment in this style again. I thought the structure was great and had a blast with it.
Ironically if they released a "spin-off" in the style, it being the modern day it would probably be a good game and people would enjoy it
Zelda 2 was the first game I ever bought for the NES. I would like to see a remake because it was a challenging game.
Yknow, when Dark Souls first came out, it reminded me a lot of Zelda II.
The NPCs: unhelpful
The combat: Memorization and exploitation of patterns
You will die: a lot.
You absolutely can and will wander into areas where the enemies will beat you up and steal your lunch money.
The npc's are helpful. Stop being wrong
If it wasn't a Zelda game, would people look at the game differently? Like, if it was called Palace Quest or something, would people see it differently and not be pulled down by baggage from the first game? People hate it because it's not Zelda 1, but does that automatically make it a bad game?
Ngl, the name Palace Quest sounds like an actual NES title that could have existed.
People would possibly dislike it more, since it would be less known and there would be way less people who played it as a child (You can notice that there's a good amount of fans of this game that played back in the time)
It'd be this unknown nes game some would call a hidden gem and most who tried their hands at it would shy away, it being zelda is the reason most give it a shot in the first place
I always thought that the dislike around Zelda 2 was less because it was different, and more because it was grindy, cryptic, and difficult to the point of being unfair. I mean, BOTW and MM are quite different to a typical Zelda game, but people love those games. Not that Zelda 2 is an awful game with no redeeming quality’s, but the problems with it run much deeper than it simply being different.
@@lunarluce5215 The thing with Zelda 2 is that while it initially appears difficult and cryptic, once you get a feel for it, it becomes an incredibly fun game. It’s not bad, it just takes a minute to get used to.
@@pcmk1843 Idk, even after replaying the game I don't have a very high opinion of it. I don't consider the game garbage or anything, but it definitely is my second from the bottom in the series (the worst game in the series, in my opinion, is Spirit Tracks, though I can be swayed to throw Triforce Heroes below Zelda 2, kind of depends on my mood.)
Defend It is my guilty pleasure, I can't help but hit the link button whenever the Internet is on screen. He's living the dream, he ain't got no pants! Just like Link in Zelda 2!
As a guy who does say Zelda 2 is the worst Zelda game, let the Record show that is not a mark against it as a game. independent of the series it is a part of, it is a reasonable, albeit difficult game for the era in which it came out.
If anything, it just showcases how consistent the Zelda series is with its quality. I feel it's really only lacking when compared to other Zelda games.
Yeah there's no shame in being the worst when the rest are that great.
Still better than Triforce Heroes IMO
@@Level_Eleven legit forgot that game existed
@@Level_Eleven Triforce heroes is fun online, too bad no one plays it anymore.
Idk, I don’t like it even when compared to other games. Just isn’t fun. Unfair enemies, overworld is confusing, not enough hints as to where things are. Finding things on my own is great and all, but not when I don’t even know it exists.

Legitimate criticism that I can think of. You can get all the way to the final boss without the super hidden final spell (you have to find an item that allows you to remove forest tiles and use that item on a specific tile in the middle of nowhere to find a town). The super hidden final spell makes the boss able to be hit. This wouldn't be an issue if you could get out of the dungeon and back easily. It is a slog full of floating enemies that move at random intervals over instant death traps while you have knockback on every hit that would make Simon Belmont blush. I don't know, I never really liked the defend it series. It feels a bit too strawmanish for my taste. The internet always has the worst arguments even when I agree with Jirard.
You raise a valid point but the item in question is the hammer, you can’t even go the second island without the hammer so the player should have the hammer by the time they reach the area with the super secret hidden town
I think it's really unlikely that you wouldn't know you were missing a final spell. Firstly, there'd be a gap in the inventory. Second, there's a totally obvious town near the 6th Palace that you'd totally end up investigating. And if you got the message from the old man saying you weren't strong enough (or whatever he says), you'd know there was other stuff to find. And I think the old man tells you to look in the woods to the east or something to that effect? And even if you weren't totally sure where it was (I didn't know as a kid at first, when I was like, 8), you'd have ended up going through that cave that leads to New/Hidden Kasuto and you'd see a dead end with trees.....you'd be like me and try to hack down all those trees. I wasn't some genius, and I figured it out. It's not easy, no. But if you've gotten that far in the game, I think it's likely you'd figure it out. There are Dragon Quest tiles that are more obscure and people still find those crests in DQ2...and that damned Water Flying Cloth in the Dragon Horn North Tower. So basically, I think finding the Thunder spell sort of "just happens."

The Zelda ii story always amazes me. I never once got an inkling zelda II was divisive until the 2010's. Then suddenly everyone hates it. At least jirard knows whats up
Honestly, I really enjoyed Zelda II, potentially more than the DS games
I think unless you really enjoy exploration and stuff, play with a guide, and that takes care of the hardest aspect of the game
I’m exceptionally poor at reaction time and all the traditional game skills, but I was able to beat it with some strategizing and abuse of bit/bot(?) spawners
Also the ‘send you back to the start’ point isn’t as bad as it sounds, because unlike a lot of games of the era, at least with the GC collection version I played, you don’t actually lose progress. You still have all items you collected and dungeons you completed, you just have to walk back to where you were.
It’s been years, but I remember sometimes dying on purpose just to have my lives refilled to three before I did something like fight a boss, start a hard area with low lives, etc, and I remember that being extremely worthwhile

My hot take has always been than Zelda 2 is no worse than Zelda 1, it's just a different style of gameplay
@A B huh? That's *exactly* the point I was making, that Zelda 2 isn't worse than Zelda 1 just because of the style?
@A B that's just a really bad reading. If anything I'm actually saying Zelda 1 is worse than people think, Zelda 2 just gets singled out for being "weird" because it's a side-scroller
I'm so glad to see Defend It return, even if it's just for one episode. Well done to all those involved.
I think if this was any other game it would be remembered as an innovative classic. But because it’s a Zelda game, the series that is probably the most beloved of all time, it’s just seen as mediocre. When I was a kid I had no perception of how “bad” the game was. They just gave us a Zelda game, and I played it until I beat it.
I do remember it being insanely difficult - the part on Death Mountain with the maze to find the hammer took me weeks. But that was just the way it was back then. This was kind of the Dark Souls of games back then. The dark atmosphere a long with the punishing difficulty made it extremely intimidating, but when I beat it I felt so satisfied.
I agreed with the internet on this one. I did not enjoy Zelda 2 that much, hell I hated it, and to this day have never finished it, but Damn that speech by Jirard made me appreciate it more.
i need more "defend it" in my life. i forgot this series was a thing on here.
Defend It! It’s back? If it is I’m hyped!
Court drama skit didn’t pan out too well lmao
I actually think the biggest issue with Zelda 2 was that its reach exceeded its grasp. Most of the problems with it would have been resolved by being a super nintendo game rather than NES. It needed more space for text, a few more buttons, and a slightly better interface. I think it tried too much, and went too far for what it was meant to be.
Wrong. Best game on the nes
This game is quite good and I love having it in my collection. Those who complain about it's difficulty (Ghosts and Goblins, Rygar, Metroid etc. ) were/are wusses. This is the type of game that put hair on our balls. You had to work for this one.
My kid recently started Ace Attorney & Loved all the vibes you emulated here
I never understood the complaints about this game. Both at the time and now. If this game came out for the first time now, as is, as a Zelda game or as something original, people would be completely in love with it. And at the time, it was airtight and the mechanics are predictable and rock solid (which is more than you could say for most of what came out in those early NES days). This game is completely amazing and all I can say about those who complain about it, is that they probably just played it when they were young and thought it was hard. It's a challenge, but not anything unreasonable at all. You can barrel through it using superior combat, or you can be slow and methodical. The maze elements of the palaces are not complicated until the Great Palace. The "puzzles" and items you need in towns are mostly easy to find (with the exception being Hidden Kasuto). And even if you get sent back to the beginning when you die, it takes like....5 minutes to walk back to where you were. Not a serious issue.
Andrew Campbell is easily one of my all time favourites! Cracks my shit up every time.
AVGN convinced me to play Zelda 2 on my collectors edition way back when I was a kid and I've never regretted it. It's such a good RPG, and a worthy Zelda game. I'd also like to add that Zelda 2 introduced the dungeons AS the puzzle. Aside from death mountain you eventually will find your way in Zelda 1. But Zelda 2 introduced a concept that'd come back hard for 3D Zelda games. Makes it into my top 10 somewhere. Fuck it; 8. Put it behind Minish Cap.
please bring back defend it
Zelda 2 has better combat then Zelda 1 and Zelda 1 is just as confusing as Zelda 2.
Yeah I get that the OG Zelda was revolutionary and all, but it's so archaic that it's simply not fun to play for more than like 10 minutes at a time imo
Yup, Zelda 2 frickin' slaps. I was never able to beat it on the NES as a kid (I even had a Game Genie, LOL), but back in the early 2000's my wife and I got through it 100% legit on the Gamecube, and it felt so good, and it was awesome.
Side note: is the "prosecutor" purposefully saying the Adventure*s* of link? If so, nice touch.
I can't believe it's back!
I kinda love this repeat crossover, what a neat idea! So cool! Great stuff Jirard!
honestly after being introduced to the game through Game Grumps i just loved the music
Why give this a completionist rating of finish it? You have to find all the magic containers to get the last spell so the only difference between finishing the game and completing it are finding a couple of heart containers.
This is the only game I would rather complete than just finish.
because he didnt like having to scour the world for the remaining powerups or doing the XP grind to max level.
@@UltimateGamerCC I think it’s really dumb he always considers getting to max level part of completion lol
@@legendofjess6044 well 100% completion means that you have to do all that there is to be done, you dont get to skip something and call a game complete just because you think it's tedious or pointless.
But, yeah, completion is easier than just finishing.
Even every seemingly "positive" thing Jirard said about the game just made me want to play it less and less lol.
Also, that argument of "It's easy to pick your battles because you can see enemies in the overworld" is nonsense. You can see (and fight) enemies in the overworld in every other Zelda title as well. If anything, it's harder to pick your battles in Zelda II because you don't know where the shadows are going to appear, and they will chase you down.
If it helps, he didn't quite point out that you don't literally start over with a game over, you just lose all your experience points _since the last level up_ which is still frustrating. and what's more, the game rewards you for saving up your XP and deliberately avoiding leveling up by giving you more options of what to raise, which makes it even more tense when you can just die to some bullshit. But it's still never a FULLY full-on retro-game 'game over' situation where you lose all your progress.
I don't think anyone can really expect to pick this up and enjoy it unless they love simple retro games already. but it's not as bad as it sounds (even when it's being defended it usually does sound bad yeah).
there's a youtube channel that fucks with code to make different shit happen in old games, like jump heights and respawn point behaviors, I wonder if that game could tweak Zelda 2 until it felt comfortable running and jumping around. Maybe give Link a longer fucking hurtbox for the sword.

YES! After finding out about Defend It so long ago, this is the episode I most wanted to see! (This and Wii U).
The internet went a bit easy on it though. I’ll defend the game forever, but it asks a lot, even for something “NES hard”. If you could checkpoint from every palace after game over (instead of just the final one, which is already hard enough just to reach), it would go a long way towards balancing the game for a modern audience.
Also, how can anyone say it’s the worst Zelda game when the CD-I games exist?
The CDI games don't count
Say the cdi ones don't count, fine. Zelda 2 is still better than Skyward Sword.
how convenient. It’s easy to call Zelda 2 a bad game if you arbitrarily discount everything that’s obviously worse
@@Deraphim Considering that even Nintendo pretends the CD-I games don't exist (especially since they had nothing to do with their development, aside from being forced to lend the name) I don't think its unreasonable to discount them from the mix when ranking the Zelda series. Saying they don't count is really just establishing the fact that they just aren't Zelda games, even if they do have the name and some of the characters, much like how Mario Party and Mario Kart games shouldn't count while ranking the game in the Mario series.
Had to make sure to like this video just because it brings back the "Defend It" part of The Completionist that introduced me to this channel and I love it. It also is the only ongoing "Phoenix Wright" skit(s) going on that I know of. Love that series.
And as someone that isn't super attached to the Zelda formula... I'd love to see a remake of Zelda 2 or another 2D side-scrolling "Metroidvania" Zelda game. Ever since I played Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, I'd love to see more 2.5D Metroidvania games. And the Zelda franchise already has an "excuse" to give it a go.
Also, it reminds me of playing Link in the Subspace Emisssary, which was the most fun I had with that mode in Super Smash Bros Brawl.
So long story short, I'd love to see a remake or sequel to the gameplay of Zelda 2, that looks (or feels) like playing Link in the Subspace Story Mode from Brawl, with a Metroidvania twist.

It's not great by any means, but it's not nearly as bad as the internet wants you to believe. The music marinates my soul in nostalgia to this day.
When it comes to defending Zelda II, my main point will always be that "There was no *set in stone* formula for what Zelda was supposed to be" as it was only the second game in the series. I see nothing wrong with experimenting with something like that.
*Zelda II walked so Ocarina of Time could run*
What? Link To The Past walked so OoT could run is more apt.
agreed, Zelda was not cemented for having a specific gameplay style. hell Castlevania had the same hiccup, giving people an experience that was greatly different from the first game.
That's true, but that doesn't automatically make it good. Failed experiments are very much a thing, and, considering that the series never went back to this specific formula, that's what I would call Zelda II.
And I really don't know what OoT has to do with anything here.

Gunna be honest, I tried playing Zelda II before finding out that the internet hated it and as a Zelda fan, I actually hate this game. It wasn’t fun to play, the grind was a pain, and I often had NO idea what I was doing. Not only that but later on you’re punished if you didn’t focus levels on magic because you NEED magic to even damage enemies and your spells don’t carry over between screens but your depleted magic does. I personally hated it. Others might not, but I did.
Tip for trading a lot of grinding late in the game for just a little in the beginning: placing a crystal in a temple gives you a free level up, max level for each stat being 8. When going to a temple, get the item. Solve the rest and beat the boss of you wish, but DON’T enter the room after the boss! You only need the item to progress until it’s time for the final temple. When you have reached level 6 in all three stats, go back and place the crystals. Max levels achieved!

Zelda II had some interesting ideas and plenty of experimentation, which isn't inherently good or bad, but the execution was horrendous. It's not trash or the worst game of all time but it's also not a good game. If you like it despite all it's flaws, nothing wrong with that, I also like the game. I'm also not gonna give it a pass either BECAUSE I like it. I would love to see an RPG set in the world of Zelda but I don't want it in the style presented in Zelda II.
as usual, the Internet has a meltdown over an opinion, hence this episode. lol
That Keen 4C pogo jump was the best.
OOhh, I hate to say but majoras mask being on the collection makes perfect sense. It's the best Zelda title ever made. It had all the elements that made OOT an instant classic, but it expanded on that with far more emotion, more easily grasped consequences, and a melancholic overtone that had a greater lasting impact. OOT started it, but Majoras Mask dropped the damn mic
Zelda 2 is still one of my favorite games of all time. Yeah, it's hard as hell, but it's such a fun challenge and, really, I love me some RPG elements in my action platform games. I wish Nintendo had made a few more in this style; it could've basically been their fantasy Metroid series.
As hated as this game was, Nintendo deserves huge props for realizing their mistake and going back to the original instead of scrapping the series or doubling down on an even crazier less Zelda like game
I love this, so much. Thank you for the memories.
5:55 : ''where you could jump on goomba's head''
5:56 : *gets hits by a goomba because he didn't jump''
Zelda II is a masterpiece. I will never stop spreading the gospel of this game. It is true that it is impossible without a guide, but that's part of what made it so great. You had to dig deep into Nintendo Power issues to try and finish it. It created conversations on the playground, and in the neighborhood. It took a community effort to finish it, but when you finally beat it, oh- what a glorious moment! Cheers.
yeah but it sucks to play on Switch without a manual
I wouldn’t actually say it’s impossible without a guide. I was able to beat the game for the first time a few years back and I only used external help like, once or twice. Regardless, Zelda 2 is incredibly underrated and I at the very least like it way more than the first game.
Internet says: "Zelda 2 is the worst game in the franchise"
Zelda CDI says: "Hold my beer... ALL 3 of them!"
1st zelda game I've ever played. Never beat it but always loved it and all the music
cant get over how amazing the new intro is
That double jeopardy joke is kind of ironic seeing as Bill Cosby just got released for the same reason.
finally. god they've been trying to ruin him for decades. All because he's the only celebrity who actually STOPPED doing messed up shit and started trying to preach integrity and personal responsibility.
Yeah, double jeopardy didn’t really have anything to do with him getting released. It was more on shady techniques used by prosecutors
@@bigbromiki1 he literally got out because the Pennsylvania Supreme Court found the charges in violation of the 5th amendment. Which covers double jeopardy.
@@calebkidd692 it violated his fifth amendment right to not incriminate himself not anything About double jeopardy
@@bigbromiki1 shady techniques indeed. They literally changed it so there's no more statute of limitations on the 'crime' in question, _after the existing statute of limitations had passed._ that's so far beyond unconstitutional there isn't even a word for it.
Zelda 2's biggest problem is that it's on the NES. The system is just not powerful enough to do the game justice. It desperately needs a modern remake, much moreso than the Oracle games.
We honestly need to see Judge Cox way more often. This was an awesome revisit, thank you so much for recreating the fun of the original!
Jirards description of zelda 2 is spot on, it's NES hard and I love he mentioned the guide that used to come with those games back in the day. I just played through this on my channel earlier this year for the 35th anniversary. While not my favorite it's still pretty entertaining and worth more attention
"Even Miyamoto says the game is trash. Therefore, Zelda 2 is trash."
Yeah, as if there haven't been other games the creators hated that were actually fantastic.
Films, too. The director of American History X hated it but it's an amazing film. Kubrick hated Fear and Desire, but that movie is fantastic, especially for being his first film.
For me, Zelda II only has one good point: The Dungeon theme. That's a banger.
Shame on every other aspect of the game.
im so happy to see Defend it return
One of my favorites.
It is actually one of my favorite Zelda games
Imo there is a diff to a game being a must play, and it being an integral entry in a given series.
There is no point in going back to archaic games when we have so many BETTER games
"Better"
I played this game without a guide , it’s still one of my favorites , to this day I beat this once a year .
I love all the pixel art characters in the background of the court (especially Sam from Sam and Max.)
Zelda 2 is hands down one of the best Zelda games.
Not gonna lie, completely forgot about this series! Who else did or is it just me?
Nice to see Sam in court. I’m sure he and Max are very familiar with that room
This was my very first NES game ever and I will forever love it, I played it so damn much.. and yes, I beat it, multiple times, 8 years old, without a guide.. it took a long time but I loved it so much I never gave up..
Same. You just need patience, time and a little bit of skill. Things most people do not have nowadays, myself included. I even beat it without dying. The game was in english which is not my native language.
I get the idea that Jirard hasn't seen the internet's opinion of Zelda II since his original video.
Zelda II haters aren't even close to the majority now. Take one look at this comment section. I can't even find *A* hater (no, the one in the mirror doesn't count), let alone a majority. The internet's opinion has flipped. Zelda II is as much the black sheep now as Majora's Mask.
Yeah, *I* may hate this game. I still hate this game. Though I will admit that the main reason I hate it because it has great ideas and concepts being held back by not the best execution. That's why I don't see the point in arguing with people who love the game - we agree 99% of the time. If you're going to try and tell me everything you love about the game, there's no point, I agree. The only thing we disagree on is the verdict.
The only thing I ask is you stop pretending people who like Zelda II are rare. It's outdated, you're the majority on the internet now.
