After they run the tickets out, the rest of people that show-up got in for free, at this rock/metal monster concert not just Metallica played also AC/DC, Black Panther & The Crows among other.. 54 people were reported death (not sure how many injuries), helicopters were trying to cool the heat from so many fans & people side by side, imagine you are in the middle of such crowd and need to go to toilet.. the army soldiers were overwhelmed and eventually as we seen on the clip some of them took of caskets & clothes to flag them above the crowd..
But this is only the 5 or 6 position of biggest live concerts, the biggest was Rod Stewart who was performing to a 4,6 millions of people and 2,3 & 4 positions Jean Michele Jare live concerts..

It was just before the Soviet fall, an effort to allow a little Western stuff in for those other than the Party elite and hold power a bit longer. It was a kind of Monsters of Metal, Metallica being 1 of 4 bands to play.
The helicopters flying back and forth were trying to stir up the air as there was worry the people in the middle would not get enough oxygen - there were several deaths reported, in fact, but none officially chalked up to asphyxiation.

The first concert after the fall of the Soviet Union, and it was free. 1.6 million people. 50+ deaths were said to have happened during the concert which I would say is a shame, but there were no reasons said as to what those deaths were from. That black kite shaped guitar the lead singer is using is his trademark guitar. He has it in cream/white and silver I think aswell. Info on this concert. 1.6million people, 53 people died. This was set at the Russian Airfield, they used helicopters overhead to create draft for all the people, as you imagine the heat 1.6million people would create. This was a gift to the people by the government this concert, right after the Iron Curtain came down on USSR /the Soviet union. In reality, western music wasn't allowed to be listened to, if you were caught with any you'd be hung, shot or jailed for it. Very intensely strict regime. Most hadn't seen or heard of western or other music apart from classical before this. The soldiers are the soldiers from the regime, who were there to crowd control, but most were like "no way, were with them and gonna enjoy ourselves."

Not because they (may) have outdone 'The Who' Guinnes Book of World Records at 126 decibels.
Apparently they just stopped counting at 1.6 million said "Nyet" and just opened the gates. So, ~2 million people, all jumping, is 150,000 tons.
That's roughly one thousand blue whales. (Cue Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy references "Ground, wonder if it will be friends with me..")

You might check out Metallica's S&M album. Which actually stands for Symphony & Metal. The band was joined by the San Francisco Symphony - and no, Metallica did not go unplugged. If you like the driving bass drum intro for Enter Sandman, you will love hearing the bass drum kick joined by timpani, kettledrums. When they did this live, orchestra members were scared half to death by the waiting crowd roaring at them - not the reaction their regular audiences give them. The joint collaboration was the idea of the symphony conductor, who wrote the music for how his people would join into Metallica's songs.

Officially 1.5 million people was on that concert. But real number was between 1.7 - 2.1 million. And that includes Ambulance, Fire department, Police, Army and volunteers. That was and still is the biggest concert ever.

metallica is a rabbit hole to go into ... my favourite song is the version of creeping death done at that concert.. having 1.6 million russians yelling "die die die" is insane... but really .. a lot of their early works pre-90s are great. some stuff later is good, but different. their 80's stuff was on another level.

As mentioned before, this was a rare concert, though I have seen them a few times with 150k ppl, this was huge. It may seem dangerous, but us rockers do have a code to help each other. Bring on Download !!

This was free and the only place large enough was a military airfield. Those military helicopters flying overhead were armed and were there to protect the stage and would have fired on the crowd if they got out of hand. This was a truly historic event (this video is in the Library of Congress) as this was the end of the Cold War (Berlin Wall had just been torn down 2 years earlier) the end of the Soviet Union and this was the 1st time western bands were allowed to play in the USSR. They say there were 1.6 million people - but they don't mention they stopped counting at 1.6 million. During the next song Creeping Death that entire crowd jumped simultaneously yelling Die! Die! Die! to the USSR (and they meant it!) and set off seismometers miles away!

If I remember correctly, this was the monsters of rock concert that happened just after the fall of the Soviet Union. It was the first concert where bands from outside of the country were allowed to play. This concert was in the top 5 largest concerts in the world, coming in at 2.6 million people. The military had to bring their choppers in and hover over the people to stop them from getting heat stroke. There were over 50 people that died at that concert from heat stroke, or being trampled. James Hatfield the lead vocalist for Metallica said that the energy there was like getting struck by a lightning bolt.

Yes, I remember that gig, which was a big deal in Moscow. I was a freshman student at the time. A couple of guys from my group in the university were at the gig and told legends. I remembered that some people were throwing empty bear bottles (made of glass) in the crowd, and this was dangerous. And the police (militsia) acted quite toughly.

It ubruptly ended because if was followed by a different song. A song which is faster and heavier than that. For people new to Metal, i always suggest to start reacting to songs that are in their commercial album(Black Album) And then slowly vet to the faster stuffcalled (Thrash Album). Or Live Performances. Coz Metal is great live.

This part of the Monsters of Rock shows where many more acts took to that stage. In 1991 it was around the time that the Soviet Union was collapsing so the people of the Soviet Union (now Russia) of course were out in force to greet their music heroes over 1.5 million at a disused airfield. Can you just imagine being there?!!
