A tough album to pick singles from to listen too. It really is better to experience it all in one sitting. Roger Water's semi-autobiographical depiction of a rock star who is the product of over-bearing mother and authority figures (teachers) and builds an emotional "wall" to protect him from emotions and the associated pain. In the end he is forced to tear down the wall and expose himself. The poem was actually lyrics from their song "Money" from the Dark Side of the Moon album.

@@johnnyjohnny-cg7np 100% agree. The way we heard it on the radio and when we bought the album was what made it so important at the time and buy only going for the live version, oftentimes perform two years and years after the fact and not even the same band members sometimes, you just totally missed the whole vibe in the culture of the time and why they became so big to start with. Or why a particular song is so beloved to start with. And plus the Fidelity is almost always way better and you can hear exactly what the band intended you to hear and why it became a hit. And then if you love it that much, then go back and watch a live version to get that visual input.

fun fact: This video imagery is taken directly from "The Wall" movie, This Album is REALLY designed as a sort of "Rock Opera" and was designed to be viewed as a single story, NOT a collection of individual songs, and is kinda like an expose on Enforced Conformity, esp in schools

@@brittreacts yes , the whole album/movie was designed to go together, so there are ALOT of images directly related to the songs that are playing at the timeframes of the movie, its basically a descent into madness of Roger Waters (Bassist" and Syd Barret(former bandmate that wrote alot of thier songs and then retired after less than 10 years in the music industry) I would suggest reading the Wiki on the Wall THEN Listening to the whole album, it was one of the first movies that incorporated live action mixed with animated sequences

    • @aaronburdon221
      @aaronburdon221 Před rokem +16

@@brittreacts Good movie. It's actually fascinating from a psychological perspective. This song is a metaphor for Enforced Conformity, but the entire album is about mental illness and the contributing factors therein. Each song is a "brick in the wall". Each brick builds the wall in which he isolates himself from society. A good example is the fact that "Pink's" (the main character in the movie) father dies at the battle of Anzio in which the generals sacrificed men so the rest could escape in an ill-conceived flanking attempt during WW2. Another is an overbearing mother, a cheating spouse, the pressures of a rock career etc etc. P.S. If you do decide to watch that movie (which I would highly recommend), then listen closely to the lyrics as they are very important to the storyline.

The poem that the boy "Pinky" wrote in the classroom is actually some of the lyrics to the song "Money" by Pink Floyd off the "Dark side of the Moon" album which is one of the greatest albums ever made and was on the top 200 album charts for a record amount of time and if I'm not mistaken it might be back on the top 200 charts again. Pink Floyd is one of the greatest bands to ever grace us with their genius. Their music still holds up as social commentary (since socially and politically nothing has changed in 50 years, not for the better anyway) and they are very talented poets and musicians. This is a deep catalog to dig into. Others have suggested some good ones but Comfortably Numb - Pulse Live, High Hopes - Pulse Live, and Time are all great places to start. But keep in mind, Pink Floyd wrote albums, not songs (once Syd was gone anyway - which is the version of the band most people are familiar with). Their albums were meant to be listened to as a complete story. Hard to do on here as a reaction, I know, but worth it on your own for sure.

This song is from an album that very literally saved my life. I was alone, abused, ridiculed by my school-mates. My grandmother, who was the only member of my family that made me feel like I mattered had passed away when I was 13, and then "The Wall" came out when I was 14 years old... It tells a story of how pressures and pain dive the character "Pink" into insanity, it told me how the wall I was building around me to feel safe would ultimately destroy me... It changed my life. You need to listen to the album from start to finish: you have a keen mind, you will understand the messaging. The movie is incredible as well, it will give you a different perspective to improve your understanding. It would be absolutely AWESOME to see a song by song reaction to the album, maybe over a years time....?

The song and this video which contains scenes from the movie (The Wall) is an enditement of the British school system. The grinder scene and the faceless students are symbolic of what that system does to children's minds. The one child is Pink, the protagonist of the story.

We were in Junior School in 1979, in Yorkshire. The pupils (as we were then called) were not allowed to sing "we don't need no education". Anyone caught doing so was sent to the headmaster.
And yes, we were caned at school, on the palm of our hands or on the bum, rarely but to did happen.

As stated before this is from a concept album with a complete story
As part two this is when he builds the final parts of the wall in his mind from memories of his childhood as he slowly goes insane on a rock and roll tour this causes his metal breakdown and collapse at this point of the story

The poem the teacher reads out loud are lyrics from Money, a Pink Floyd song.
The picture at the end is of Bob Geldof of the Boomtown Rats and the force behind the Live Aid benefit concerts. Geldof plays the lead in the movie The Wall.

Pink Floyd has THE best audio of any concert I have ever been too. They use Quadraphonic sound. The PA system is in the front, the upper sides and the back. I saw them in ASU stadium. We were on the floor waiting for the show to start and at one point they played the sound of a helicopter and it sound like it flew all around us then buzzed our heads, it was crazy.

"Another Brick In The Wall" was turned into a "rock opera" like "Tommy" (The Who) and Beetle's "Yellow Submarine." It's a great movie, but it's a little trippy.

Great reaction Britt! Should definitely listen to the album version of all the music first to get all the nuances in their production. This version was re-recorded for the movie and the guitar solo was buried I the mix for some crazy reason. The Wall specifically is best listened to the album first, then the movie, then the live concert called "Is There Anybody Out There?". Looking forward to more!

  • @strangeworldsunlimited712

The "video" is from the movie they made of the album (in 1983) 4 years after its release in 1979. Something like 90% of this album was written by Pink Floyd bassist and lead singer, Roger Waters. It's a semi biographical semi fictional mashup of Roger's childhood and the former lead singer, Sid Barrett's decent into madness, all wrapped together into the fictional character of "Pink Floyd". The stuff from the movie depicting Pink as a child is from Roger's life. The stuff with Pink as an adult are meant to represent Sid. The man PLAYING Pink in the movie is singer/producer Bob Geldof from the band the Boomtown Rats. That's who you see in the photo at the end.
It's a really trippy movie (and album), but it worth a look/listen if you REALLY want to understand the story that Roger was telling.

Thanks for the reaction--this song was a critic against the british education system in the 1940's. The poem that the teacher reads to humiliate the kid at the start, is in fact the lyrics of the song Money, also by Pink Floyd, which became their best selling hit--and the teacher laughs about it--irony. And you're right--the teacher at home is being bossed by his wife, so he takes revenge on the kids at school. About the masks, it means that the school system in these days encourages conformity--a manufacture to suppress kid's individuality and make them all the same. They made the movie the wall back in 1982--worth watching as a whole. The pic that you see at the end is the main actor in the movie. For the band himself, try to search for live performances. They disbanded in the mid 1980's, but the survivors still collaborate with other artists, once in a while--Roger Waters is still active at almost 80 y.old.Have a nice day.

Brit, I've just started your channel; love your takes on music and even fashion. What made me come back was your enthusiasm for the story- telling videos, especially the country songs. Now, here you are with Pink Floyd! One of the best umm..progressive, psychedelic bands ever. Please take a look at Breathe, Time, Money, Brain Damage, and really all the tracks on the Dark Side of the Moon album. Philosophical, cerebral, freaking groovy. Appreciate your channel!
