Crazy this world is. Paul was actually my therapist as a kid, I was in foster homes and barely making it through life and Paul was my only friend at times.... So I’m going through CZcams and he pops up 😍😂😂 Thanks for everything you do Paul and thank you so much 👊 I now have my own beautiful family and I have been a great person and parent because of everything you taught me as a kid 👊 but I’ll be watching all the videos to always be getting better and more complete 🙏 take care of each other out there 🖖

@@LiveOnPurposeTV well not sure if you’ve covered these, but learning to listen and be present in the moment with child or partner is something I think we all need to keep getting better at and coming up with tools to help and indicators of when we’re off our game. Parents should always be aware of the tone of how they communicate because children feel your vibrations before they understand the words you say and calm loving vibrations help set the tone for your little person. You were such a huge blessing and impact for my life and I’m glad to see you have a platform to help others 🙏 you deserve the world and I hope you get just that 👊

I remember in High School, there was a girl who always looked sad, and her hair and clothing was always unkempt for many months, until one day I saw her looking happy, smiling a lot and really dressed up and makeup, and my friends and I wondered what had changed her, and when asked this question to her, her reply was simple, she said, “My mother said ‘I love you!’ to me for the first time in my life!” ...
    The power of words!💗

I disagree! Being a stepparent is the hardest job. I have done it both (parent and stepparent). Being a parent is a piece of cake compared to being a stepparent - especially if you are the one spending more time with your stepchild than any of the parents do. You do everything for them, yet you are the bad guy while the parents can do no wrong (in the eyes of the child).

Both of my daughters are ADHD. I have Aspergers. Their dad is ADHD. I did remind them to do things. I have to hack my life in so many ways just to survive. I actually sit down and write out an activity board to remind me what I need to do or whatever it is doesn’t get done. I come across as being controlling but it’s how I survive. I’m quite happy with routine. I have come to realize my ideas of routine drive them nuts. Some people find me very rigid and not too open to change. I can but I’m not very good at it.

Did this message resonate with me? Yeah, I'm a little teary eyed thinking how my dad, who passed away at age 97, never once told me he loved me until he was 95 years old and was relying on me as his only caregiver because he had Alzheimer's. Frankly, he was a malignant narcissist most of his life, a subject that's addressed on a whole buncha other CZcams channels. I forgave him long ago because he was mentally ill. Interestingly enough, his lifelong malignant narcissism eventually was eclipsed and overpowered by Alzheimer's, deafness, near-blindness, and an inability to walk. Up until his fatal heart attack, he was still a potential danger to me in that he was highly likely to give the family "fortune" to outsiders either to spite me and my sister or inadvertently.

True. My kids have coped with everything they've faced SO FAR. This is true. I always tell my daughter to have faith in herself that she will handle whatever obstacles present.
I have a good relationship with my daughter 18 but my son 15 hardly ever really communicates with me. Should I say ''I love you as he brushes past me? I don't know how to love-as- a- verb to my son anymore even though I do love him of course! I say ''HELLO GREGOR!'' every time he comes in to the room because I don't know how else to show him that he matters. I wrote him a letter a while ago to say that I wanted to support him if he wasn't happy at school and to tell me what ideas *he* had wrt his education. He didn't mention it. He does nothing he doesn't want to do and I am reasonably accepting of that but if there's something I can do to help him I'll do it, but what!?. I can't make him study, I can't make him leave his bedroom. I'd like to help him not self-sabotage though. He was the most gorgeous gorgeous little person when he was a little boy. So adorable. At about four years old he said ''when I'm grown up, we'll swap numbers and stay in touch''. We still live in the same house and we're not in touch! He listens to my daughter sometimes, she gets through to him but i don't want that to be a responsibility for her to bear.

    • @LiveOnPurposeTV
      @LiveOnPurposeTV  Před 3 lety +3

Susan C, acknowledging him is good. Try the I Love You and see if it gets a reaction. You are right, don't put too much on your daughter. Let him know you are there for him and that you love no matter what and even if. Don't worry about him not responding to the letter, write him another and just tell him you love him. I hear so many stories like this where it seemed like the words weren't making a difference, but then something happens and the kid thinks back and it helps.

These are great points and I think I've been grasping them as my kids grow. I practice thinking about how much I love my children and how valuable they have been in my life in my prayers and journal. So when I'm about to go to bed I don't want to skip going to my teenage sons and telling them i love them. I also definitely recognized the value of letting my kids find their own way in life. As they got older, they spent more and more time on their own so I really tried to make sure, even when I felt busy and overwhelmed with taking care of younger kids, to set down whatever I was doing when my teenagers come to me. They want to talk, I'm listening. I'll work on these four things to communicate daily.

I also lost a brother when I was very young. It has been hard learning to let them do their own things, to step back and allow them to make decisions for themselves. We are still learning, but acknowledge that we are raising Adults, adults who will be part of society and contribute to the world around them. Hardest thing I've ever done in my life. All great advice! Thank you Dr. Paul! I believe #4 and #3 are related....the more mature you are, the more capable you are of handling a situation....obviously a child needs to learn safety, boundaries before telling them they can handle a situation (eg. Learning to swim in the deep end of the pool, learning not to run into the street, learning not to go with a stranger, etc.)....we must Prepare them first to handle challenging situations. I disagree. Its not about maturity - whatever that is! It's about skills. Knowing what to say and how to say it, how to act and how to act it. Being able to read situations and understand what the real dynamic is. Maturity is being content with yourself and believing in yourself, which you can't do without successful intrapersonal skills.

Thank you I have a question When a child (four and a half ) wants to overpower another child , but without violence just touching the other children is that considered bullying? In my eyes it's a way of provoking attention or reaction for interaction, but I'm not sure if it's bullying or attention seeking or wanting to overpower
I really need your help on this because the kids who receive this action don't seem to be bothered but the mothers have a problem with this and they respond by telling off my son, and I don't know how to respond to all this . This channel has helped me keep my sanity ! I appreciate it

Christina Nal, it is about understanding what is normal for children and your son's behavior is normal. We are labeling too much as bullying.

I have depression and am the opposite of a helicopter parent. His dads family who I was forced to live with every good thing I tried to do they spitefully told him not to listen to me and would let him do whatever he wants.
I work 5 nights a week & do all the chores by myself as well as the chores but haven’t been able to escape his dad yet. I was forced into getting pregnant and never had a bond with my child. I try to be patient and of course helpful and I do care but it’s a huge struggle.

But what happens when my teen twins become complete jerks, ignoring their chores, blowing off schooling (they're home-schooled) & I just can't love them anymore? If I start saying these 4 things out of the blue, my kids will think I'm lying. Truth be told, my mom over-protected me when I was growing up, which told me that I couldn't handle this rotten world. And she was right. This world is definitely rotten, & I completely can't handle my family at all & want out. Every night I hope to die in my sleep. And every morning I wake up disappointed.

i strongly agree with these four points, but, unfortunately, my parents didn't say any of these things to me except the last one--but they didn't mean it. they have never defined the word "love" and i believe you can't give what you don't understand. the way that children are abused so often in this country with no consequences is an abject tragedy. and it's by design.
