Friend and fellow Bond fan Jeroen - aka @DutchBondFan - and I came up with a new collaboration idea - Dealing Out A Double-O Debate.
The premise - we sat down to debate a selected topic about 007. Since a debate needs two sides to argue, we randomly dealt out which side and stance on the topic we would have to defend or attack. We had to do the best we could to come up with arguments and points to convince the other we were right about our dealt out position, whether we genuinely agreed with it or not.
This episode we debate the decision that 1979's Moonraker took by sending 007 into outer space and whether the series should revisit the idea of sending James Bond into orbit for another adventure.

I've often wondered what Bond's intention was in YOLT. To destroy the rocket in space thus killing himself but averting WW3 ?

Since the rocket can land on Earth, I'm guessing that Connery's Bond would have piloted it down to a safe landing again. The fact that he has no training to operate that spacecraft is not a problem, given that even by 'YOLT' Bond had been shown to be able to pilot or use any conceivable mechanical vehicale/device.

To be honest, Moonraker does a good job with the space part of the film. It is one of my least favourite Bond films, but that's because of the over the top campiness and cringy humour. Space was a bad idea, but I think it mostly worked in the film and it made sense with the story they told. Except the ray guns, the space part was ok.

I think one point that should have been discussed is that "They Spy Who Loved Me" villian Stromberg was weak. The villian Drax was miles above Stromberg in personality and interest.
As such, Drax needed his own diabolical plan to thwart. And as such, he needed a base of operations. Star Wars and the bookname are what determined that it would be a space station with shuttles.

I really enjoyed this vlog. I had to point out that when you posted the one photo of Sean Connery's Bond being suited up in a space suit, there was a person on Connery's right who resembled a Dr. No-era Connery himself. It's most likely the way the photo was shot, but, wow!

I think if the movies after Craig's era go back to a more fantastical tone, Bond going into Space could work in a modern setting. I wouldn't necessarily want to see it happen, but I think it's somewhat possible. The Martian is a good guide for designing space stations and ships that are beyond what's possible right now but still feel like they could one day belong in our world, I think they'd use that style instead of massive stylised sets..

The new actor (my pick is Theo James) may go after an evil Elon Musk and wind up in a more grounded space adventure.

I could see making a plot that involves Space work today- something, something, badguy messing with our Satellites or the ISS or whatever - but that would be more like in YOLT, i can imagine Bond getting involved to stop that kind of stuff, but he would stay on Earth and not actually being send into Space to help.

To get Bond into space... It would have to be at the beginning of the film. He’s been trained as an astronaut and is sent up to the International Space Station for some reason which is just a cover for his real mission - to recover super secret information from a damaged spy satellite. In the course of Bond’s attempt to retrieve the information, the satellite is thrown back into Earth’s gravity and crashes. Cue the credits. Back on Earth, the rest of the film is a race between Bond and our villain to get to the crash site first and retrieve the secret information.

Moonraker is one of those goofy movies that actually works better once you allow yourself to accept that Bond is in space fighting with frickin lasers. As soon as you buy that, this movie isn't bad at all. In fact, the space stuff makes more sense than Bond wandering aimlessly around South America in a Mexican poncho.

Another great episode. Bond in space in the video games like Nightfire with brosnans likeness and Craig re acting the Moonraker mission that’s fine. I would say just leave Moonraker as the only space bond mission period it’s a time piece no need to re do it.

Ark Angel (Alex Rider book) did a pretty good job with integrating him going up into space with the main storyline.

Very late comment, but I've only just found these debates. I honestly don't see a problem with a one-off Bond in space/Earth orbit adventure. The EON series had long left Fleming's concept/plots behind and since the film series had ridden the wave of various genres in the 1970's and Bond regularly saved the world from devastation......how is space any more outlandish than 'YOLT', 'DAF' and 'TSWLM'. This kind of film hero is going to end up in every imaginable locations and environment available to the film makers.

How would I get Craig Bond into space?
I would make it about a mission where Bond had to help a Female British astronaut who is working for a SpaceX type organization. Bond with lean on the astronaut's help to get him through his mission. The astronaut would use Bond's skill set to help keep her out of danger.

I think Hugo Drax is one of the best Bond baddies. Hes the only one who thinks he is the good guy. Goldfinger knows hes evil and enjoys it. Scaramanga thinks morality is a sham. Zorin is a nut. Silva is consumed by revenge ect.
But Drax actually thinks a global holocaust is for the greater good to create "the ultimate dynasty". So hes fascinating. Hes so stoic and cultured almost mechanical yet hes so clearly a crackpot. Hes space Hitler.
So I think you can make Hugo Drax in a serious movie.

At this point I wouldn't mind seeing Bond go pack to space. Do it as "realistically" as possible and hide it in the third act. Make it a twist. Don't advertise it. If audiences and fans hear about it beforehand they might write off the hole movie.

Sorry, MR was bottom 2, at best. The producers did what they did best in the 70s...copy what Hollywood was doing. This, and OP was the peak of the dreaded camp. Moore was a great actor but as he got older they still put 4, 5, an entire hockey team with sticks that Moore of course beat up. And they never allowed the Girls to get as old as he was. Stacey Sutton steaming with Grandpa Bond? Bibi wanting to get with an Old Man?
    Sorry, MR was horrible.

I will allow Bond going to space again as long as he fights Elon Musk on the Moon by infiltrating his secret space station then deleting his Twitter account.
