Van is one of the true greats. His music crossed many genres (rock, soul, jazz, blues, folk). I think ultimately he is a soul singer (Irish backgrond), and poetic song writer. His live performances tend to be more Jazzy, and Bluesy than his albums, but their are Jazzy elements on the Moondance and on his classic album Astral Weeks which is a true piece of art. He played some sax himself. I think I have about 15 of his albums all worth multiple listens.

Van Morrison's 1970 album, Moondance, ranks high among the very best of the 20th century. "And It Stoned Me", "Moondance", "Crazy Love", "Caravan", "Into the Mystic", "Come Running", "These Dreams of You", "Brand New Day", "Everyone", "Glad Tidings" -- Morrison swings in some way on every song, like drifting down a lazy river on a warm sunny day, a hot bowl of soup at home after months at sea, a couple dancing in the moonlight. Listen to them all together when you can.

This is Jazz Pop. Van Morrison had a unique sound and a number of hits in the 1960s and 70s. When he was with the band Them, they had a hit with "Gloria", which was later a huge cover hit for The Doors.
Van was one of the special guest performers to sing onstage with The Band, for their farewell concert, filmed in 1975 by a young Martin Scorsese ("Taxi Driver", "Goodfellas", "The Departed"). The concert film is called "The Last Waltz" and, until "Stop Making Sense" by the Talking Heads and director Jonathan Demme, was considered the greatest concert movie ever made.

There have been some great jazz covers of this Van original, by different artists. His music often crosses between genres from jazz to blues to pop to whatever.
His early work with a band called Them is well worth a listen too. Gloria, Baby Please Don't Go, Here Comes the Night and It's All Over Now, Baby Blue (a Dylan cover) are some of the stand outs from that era.
Van's masterwork (IMO) is Astral Weeks (the full album preferably, or just the opening track of that name) and should be on your musical bucket list. It's a sprawling, spaced out journey of visions and memory, reaching for the infinite cosmos by the end, with a group of incredible studio musicians improvising a laid back jazzy accompaniment to magical effect.
Sit back and let the music take you to the moon and stars, Alex, while Brad can have fun, puzzling over its haunting, enigmatic lyrics....:-)

The song was released in January 27, 1970 so it was written before that ,, which would give it an older sound. While I have never researched it it's possible that Van Morrison had some/part or all of the song earlier in his career but either sat on it or needed to get to where he was well known enough for it to get the attention it deserved, and the praise it deserved. Greg Lake, of Emerson, Lake & Palmer, began writing "Lucky Man" when he was only 12 years old, and had, other than what would be ELP finishing touches on it, finished it before ELP was a thing. So in that case there was 11 years between the beginning of writing the song and it being recorded and released. That is not the most common thing in the music business, but it has happened a good number of times over the years.

Caught Van Morrison this past May, and the man is a perfectionist performer. The best outdoor sound ever, perfectly balanced and spaced. Absolute joy.

That bass is a bass fiddle, also known as a stand up bass. And that style is known as walking bass. My grandfather had a jazz band and he played the stand up bass.

It’s the restrained percussion that gives this song it’s smokey feel. That’s where the magic is. Masterful.
