The great Van Morrison from 1965, when he was a young 18 years old. Later he had "Brown Eyed Girl," "Here Comes The Night," "Moon dance," "Wild Night," "In to The Mystic," and on and on, and on. Van is in his mid 70s these days. This iconic artist's work, has spanned almost 60 years. A great Irishman, and a great singer/ songwriter.
I vote for "Moon Dance".. â W.G.
Notorious Arsehole as well. Top song though
Every 60's teen garage band probably learned this song as their first
And Smoke on the Water
We did. Gloria and Louie Louie
Yes. That's how it was. We spent 30 minutes rehearsing and 3 hours arguing what the band's name should be.
This is a very young Van Morrison. He went on to become one of the best singers of all time. He's got 100 classic songs. All great.
Age 13, 1964. My friend Paul comes over to my house to show me the new record that he has just got from his brothers record collection. We put it on my sisters Dansette record player. We start it playing. Its Gloria by Them. The rest is history.
Greatest three-chord song ever. First song I learned on the bass because it's so easy. More Van please.
Pure energy. This song is a model of what rock is supposed to be.Basic, raw, sweet and glorious. And intense like said in this reaction.
So raw and fantastic.
Them's version was banned by most radio stations because of the suggestive lyrics. So the Shadows of Knight changed one line (omitted "she come into my room" and replaced it with "she call out my name") That change got them massive air play in Chicago and eventually was a huge hit record. Because of it's cool and easy three chord riff, It quickly became one of the first songs every aspiring teen age garage band had to learn.
Both versions are good, but I like The Doors cover best. It goes beyond suggestive, lol
One of the greatest songs EVER!!!!
If you want to hear a very different side of Van Morrison check out John Lee Hooker feat. Van Morrison - Medley: Serves Me Right to Suffer/Syndicator. Great Blues!
Patty Smith does a really unique take on this song combining some of her poetry and this absolute classic! Worth checking it out. If you do a live video of it, use the Julles from Holland one.đ
Ye they reacted to that one some months ago
They actually did that one already
And check out the Doors version to hear the most sexually explicit song released as a single ever.
Patti also did an awesome version of âSo You Wanna Be A Rock nâ Roll Starâ by the Byrds which is really worth checking out as well.
A classic, played for decades on the radio. The whole album is great.
An American group called the Shadows of Knight had a hit with this song. Also the Doors did it in their live act. That version is X rated.
Van Morrison and Jim Morrison sang "Gloria" together at the Whisky in 1966. As John Densmore wrote: "The very last night before Van and his crew went back to the Old Sod we all played âGloriaâ together. Two drummers, two keyboards, two of everything. Even two Morrisons. After about twenty minutes, we all put âGloriaâ to bed after a glorious night."
Too bad it wasn't recorded

Another excellent reaction from Brad and Lex! PLEASE react to âWild Nightâ by Van Morrison - it was an early hit of his and I know youâre gonna love it! Lex, you sound just like Van, great imitation đ
Once again I'm caused to think differntly about a song I've known for 50 years bye the wonderfully wierd way Lex's mind functions. Thank you both!
Lex you are the nicest person Iâve ever encountered in my life, even if itâs only virtually, you always find something positive. What a wonderful way to be; youâre an inspiration.
Every garageband s number one song from the sixties.
..
Members of bar bands learned to hate popular songs like "Louie Louie", "Gloria", "Proud Mary", etc. because people requested them over and over, again and again, night after night...
That takes me back a few years ! 1968, going to a car show during the winter of ' 67-'68, in Albany NY with a friend (both of us seniors in H.S.) in his Karman Ghia with the top down , coats off, shades,- on-real cool,-far too cool actually, as I managed to lose my voice for about 2 weeks after that ! At the show the band played that song several times while we were there, thus when I hear it I jump back to that time again. If we hadn't done what we did with me losing my voice perhaps the mwmory wouldn't be so firm;y engraved on me-so the teenage crazyness and the result may have been worth it-all these years later I'm still going to car shows, and cruises but with my own car now !" still crazy after all these years !"
Have not heard this song in decades, I think Van sounds more like Mick Jager than Bob Dylan.
I loved Them records as a teenager but I wrote Van Morrison off as a Mick Jagger copyist. After Astral Weeks I changed my opinion.
Good call, he sure does.
Just about every garage band in the western world was doing this song back in the mid-sixties...
One of two absolute classics from Them - the other is "Here Comes the Night". The first band of the teenage Van Morrison, who later went on to an incredible solo career.
Brad&Lex, you'll love Van Morrison's "Wavelength" and "Domino" !!!
Van said that when Them used to perform this live, it was twenty minutes long -- imagine that! It's a long way from this to Tupelo Honey, but that's Van Morrison for you.
This song and "Louie, Louie" were must learns for every garage band of the 1960s.
The doors have a version of this song. Also Jim Morrison, lead singer of the doors and Van Morrison, lead singer of them, performed a few times together at the London Fog
Awesome guys. 'Here comes the night' is another one you'll love.
Big love from Ireland đźđȘ
"Gloria" was written by Van Morrison. One of the session players was Jimmy Page. Gloria was not a hit at first for the band Them. I think the Door made the first hit on She cried a live album in 1963.
Not really. The Doors got together in '66 and released an album with their version in 1983. It was a hit for Them, I remember it. Have never heard The Doors version.
The Shadows of Knight in 66 hit big with their version
The Alive She Cried Album was released in 1983
This song is his second hit here in Germany after "It's all over now baby blue". I agree with @John SĂžrensen, you should hear the version of The Doors. Van Morrison and The Doors are playing at the Whiskey ago-go in L.A. at the same time and Jim once said they were two Irish drinking buddies. Anyway, they liked the song and asked if they could record it and they could. Best greets @all from hamburg (germany)
Oh man, that song always brings me back to early high school in New Orleans. Probably "Gloria", and "96 Tears" by Question Mark and the Mysterians, are the two songs that just bring flashbacks of that time. Both were cool in similar ways. Excellent song and reaction, as always. Thanks and hope all is well.
For some more heartfelt songs by Them try "Don't Look Back", It's All Over Now, Baby Blue", "My Lonely Sad Eyes" or "Hey Girl". Real tearjerkers!
Thank you, sir. Much appreciated :)đ€©đ„°âš
There was a band here in Columbus, OH for years called Willie Phoenix and The Shadowlords. This was one of their most popular set closers, I wish I had a recording to share with you 2!
1964 that was a hit. Van morrison was about 18 or 19 from Northern Ireland. raw brutal beautiful blues energy. He's still singing with so much soul. great reaction. love the Patti Smith version as well.
Them's "Here Comes the Night" is a great 60's pop hit. I used it to start some weddings from the DJ stand. Well at least the refrain part actually.
Them with Van Morrison as lead singer played at the Whiskey A Go Go nightclub with the Doors as their opening act, so thatâs where Jim Morrison of the Doors learnt it. Itâs is reputed that they sang it together with Van Morrison sitting on Jim Morrisonâs shoulders both drunk. Who knows but itâs a classic song and still played by Van today.
I was in college when this song was a hit. Never thought of it as "insane." To me, it was just catchy and fun, like a lot of songs around that time.
My youth is full of great music and great memories đâ€ïž we
Danced our asses off
Every garage band in the mid-sixties learned this song. And if it was a band just starting up Gloria was probably one of the first songs they learned. Thanks for the reaction on this one!
This goes waay back to the mid-60's and he soon went solo to stay. He is Dutch by the way. There were two versions of this song that were out at the same time and they were pretty identical, but the other one, by The Shadows of Night, seems to be largely forgotten. No doubt it's on CZcams.
Fun reaction. Gloria is such a classic. It has influenced generations. Van Morrison is Irish and Hot Press Magazine in Ireland did a tribute and here is a fun cover by a (then) teenage trio covering Gloria for the magazine. As a result of this cover, Van Morrison asked them to open for him for two shows last November in Ireland. Dea Matrona (still active and touring) czcams.com/video/Ur4iLsXmoeU/video.html
This song was in the film The Outsiders (1983). Good song.
This is probably the best pure raw rock and roll song ever. Them, with Van Morrison on lead vocals, 1964, straight out of Belfast, Ireland. If you like this, listen to Your Gonna Miss Me by the 13th Floor Elevators, with the same kind of urgent raw vocals and the best scream in rock and roll history.
OG Gloria
One of the best! Wikipedia says he released over 60 albums and 80 singles - I think I've listened to a few hundred of his songs and they're all great! You've just scratched the surface and I hope you keep digging into his catalogue - I will. Thanks for the reaction.
This is a 60's garage band staple, I feel so fortunate to have lived during this era
The original eminent garage rock band song of the 60's..So many bands have covered this song... Listen to the DOORS cover of this but it is for adults only lol.. Peace from the Northeast
.
Van spitting it out, back in the day. Also from Them, try Baby Please Don't Go, a great song that has been covered many times. Enjoy! đ”đ€đ¶
There was a show from the 60's where they did bothe songs back to back it was live..France I belive..Awesome..
I like this version. I love the song Tupelo Honey. Rock on Brad & Lex
Every garage band in my town played this song when I was a kid.
Them "Here Comes The Night"...Nuff Said.
Aw, this was fun! A trip through the way back back machine for me.
I like the Shadows of Night version the best, with the great Jimy Sohns on vocals who just passed recently (RIP). Fun song
Laughing my ass off at the end as usual. Man I've always loved this song so much. It's interesting because it hints that he could have gone in a more Punk Direction but it kind of went for the I don't know eclectic medium Rock thing but he was really good at it and his songs were so great. Brown Eyed Girl is played by every bar band forever you know? I've played it myself many times. Everybody seems to love that song including me. But I really love gloria. I love that early Raw sound. It's funny as hell too.
Kettering, OH- 1965. Jim, Tom, and me walking the neighborhood, banging sticks, singing at the top of our lungs - G L O R I A!!
Jim's, gone now, haven't seen Tom since 1968, we sure had a grand time!
A friends wife was Gloria. Whenever they played this song guys wanted to dance with her. She was a good sport about it too.
YES - Van the Man!! I love you calling this British Invasion Classic "Metal" - lol. Van is such a unique soulful singer from Northern Ireland. Other classic songs are "Brown Eyed Girl" and the beautiful "Moon Dance". I really love Lex's observations - you really stand out with your unique point of view - keep it up girl đ€Łđ
I don't really hang out during 60s/70s streams but this right here is an absolute banger! đ„
Makes me wanna become a Greaser, lol
The Outsiders baby!!
Brad...the look you gave Lex after the alley comment was priceless!
Classic garage rock from the 60s with snarling lead vocals-every garage band HAD to play this song!! The band Shadows Of Knight also had a great version of this-snarling vocals included!
This is fun song and sort of prehistoric metal the leather jacket kids loved. And if you got me drunk enough, I might karaoke đ€ this. Try "Dirty Water "as a compliment to this!
The first song I played on my first guitar! Still love it.
Them was one of the early Psych era bands........this song 1964. Still have their first album!
great tune for dancing, and a raunchy message, just right for teenagers at the local dance, and this song was covered by most of the garage bands at the time. I lived it, it was great!
Van the Man closes a lot of his concerts with this song while introducing his band
Van the man. My mom was a fan and now I am too. So very many great songs throughout his career.
This is the very first, and sometimes only song, Everyone learned to play on guitar, back in the day.
Anything Van the Man Morrison is Amazing Too me!!
I've always loved this song!
A Garage Band staple for a long time! Easy to play, and a Rocker (if you can spell, LOL). Actually, if you can hear the lyrics, it's Gloria comes on to HIM (not the other way around).
Great song!! Vocals are awesome!!
She make you feel so GOOD!!
That 60s Garage Rock sound is so dope
This was released as the 'B' side to Baby Please Don't Go and I seem to remember was played alternately with the 'A' side at full blast on juke boxes. Fantastic self-penned song by Van.
every local band in the late 60's HAD to have a 20 minute plus version of this in their set!!!
Great song, so much fun
First heard this song when I saw the now classic movie, The Outsiders, back in the early 80âs..
Awesome tune
I saw him in 2019 in San Francisco. His daughter opened for him then they performed a few numbers together. He has so many great songs that he most likely will not be able to perform every one of them. The show was great from start to finish.
Wife here..Thanks for the Amazing selection!
Early example of what would come to be called Garage Rock. Van Morrison would become a UK Dylan-like legendary singer & songwriter icon. The Punk musicians of the late 70s would be heavily influenced by Garage Rock. (So-named bc it sounded like & often was local kids with their first instruments practice raw & loud in Mom & Dad's Garage, hoping to be like the Stones, Beatles & Kinks*)
I've heard this many times, but it just occurred to me how much this sounds like pretty much every George Thorogood song.
I love this! My parents played this a lot â€
Great song!
Van was the Man even at such a young age.
Garage rock classic!
LOVE THIS SONG 60S MUSIC RULES
Great reaction as usual guys. I presume you have reacted to the Patti Smith version. A different kind of hard-core. Authentic, as you say.
This is the "only" version of Gloria!
The Shadows of Knight 1965 cover became a top 10 hit - radio stations played their version because it replaced Van's lyric "She comes to my room" with "She calls out my name"
true raw blues in this one
The original UK Decca release (1964) had this as the B-side to their version of Big Joe Williams' blues "Baby Please Don't Go" and so got a bit lost in the plethora of singles at the time. US groups picked up on "Gloria" and had a greater success in the US charts. When Decca re-released it in 1973 the sides were reversed.
"Baby Please Don't Go" was a top 10 hit in the UK and its follow-up "Here Comes The Night" was #2. The Decca sessions were produced by visiting US producer Bert Berns who invited Van Morrison to decamp to the USA and record for his BANG Records label. First release for Van was "Brown Eyed Girl" and the rest, as they say, is history.
This song was 1964. And now Van the Man is Sir Van, a knight! đĄ
Hey, Iâve seen you guys react to some Van Morrison before.. not sure if you knew he got his start as the front man singing for THEM.
Check out âAnd It Stoned Meâ if you havenât heard it yet.. great stuff, and great react as always! đđ
Hendrix does a killer cover of this
When this song was current the radio stations cut out the line were he says " and then she comes to my room" Different times.
Every garage band in the world played this song back in the 60's. The Shadows of Night also did this song and released it as a single.
When I was in jr high if you had a rock and roll band, if you didnât play GLORIA then you didnât really have a rock and roll band.
Some of the stuff on his Astral Weeks are good, like Sweet Thing. Another good Van song, Domino.
If you guys wanna experience the best version of Gloria... you have got to experience Jimi Hendrix`s version of it! Sadly, I cannot find the best version which is the studio version on youtube I can only find it on Vimeo. Its One of the best Rock songs ever performed!
Beginning of Garage Rock. Louie Louie ... The Kingsman., Gloria .... Them.... You're Gonna Miss Me., 13th Floor Elevators. Wait 15 years ..... Punk.
