Saxon are a fantastic band. I've seen them live. They were on the same bill as Motorhead - that was a great concert!
Other great tracks by Saxon to check out include: Wheels of Steel, Denim and Leather, Heavy Metal Thunder, Motorcycle Man, Princess of the Night, and so many others.

Song is supposedly based on the Great NorthEast blackout in November 1965 (power outages) and they wrote it imagining being in a 747 trying to land......apparently!

Great choice, 747 and Princess of the Night and Power and the Glory are my favorites from them. NO not about drugs 747 coming from Hawaii trying to land at JFK and there was a blackout no runway landing lights and they are very low on fuel. Setting a course into the night, they are trying to find a place to land before fuel is gone, You have have to remember you cant just land a 747 at any airport

Saxon may not have been the most successful heavy metal band in the 80's... but they absolutely turned out to be one of the most persistent and respected. Metallica were actually fans of the band in the early 80's as they were getting started and opened for Saxon in 1982 in L.A.
The band was one of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Angel Witch, Venom, Raven, etc.) forming in the UK in the late 70's and debuting in 1979... it was their 2nd album 'Wheels of steel' (1980) that became a success in Europe and eventually got them to N. America w/ this single... Saxon was originally - Biff Byford (vocals), Paul Quinn and Graham Oliver (guitars), Steve Dawson (bass) and Pete Gill (drums)... After several stellar heavy metal records in the early 80's, Saxon was persuaded to make the change to be like Def Leppard and the "hair metal" scene in 1985 w/ the album "Innocence is no excuse"... then 'Rock the nations' (1986) and 'Destiny' (1988)... none of those records had a commercial impact unfortunately...
Eventually, Saxon returned to their metal roots w/ 'Solid ball of rock' (1991) w/ Nibbs Carter (bass) and Nigel Glocker (drums) joining Paul Quinn & Graham Oliver (guitar) and Biff Byford (vocals)... The band persisted in the 90's and 2000's w/ Doug Scarratt (guitar) replacing Graham Oliver and Saxon has since released 20+ studio albums and still tour worldwide 🤘🤘

I can't believe you guys reacted to this song! It's bizarre it's appeared at this time. My beloved big sister passed away from cancer in March. She was the eldest of my three sisters and me being the youngest their music tastes combined influenced me a lot growing up. She used to love Saxon in her younger days. This song was one of the first of theirs she played me as a kid and it always stuck with me through the years. Thank you guys. It's got me crying, but it's a good thing. It gives me happy memories of her x

Saxon was one of the original British metal bands that had a sensibility towards historical events, literature & philosophy sorta like Maiden. Their songs usually have a theme not just a "let's rock out" vibe. I was hooked on STRONG ARM OF THE LAW. Heavy Metal Thunder is top 10 metal songs of all time. It encapsulates everything that is sacred about being a metalhead & the purpose in your love of the genre. How you felt down front at a show .... the brotherhood, the sweat & the energy coursing through your veins. Try Crusader also 1984 baby!

Lex is wrong about this :)
The Great Northeast Blackout took place on November 9, 1965. Due to disastrous technical problems, electricity supplies to thousands of people in southern Ontario, Canada, and across eight north-eastern American states, were abruptly cut. Alarmingly, this included power supplies to airport runway lights, forcing countless planes to be re-routed elsewhere.
The blackout lasted for 13 hours: seemingly against the odds, the crime rate reportedly dropped as a result. Less surprisingly, birth rates in the areas affected unexpectedly spiked nine months later…
Fast-forward to 1979: Saxon frontman Biff Byford is watching a BBC documentary about the blackout, presented by noted science historian James Burke, and suddenly has a really cool idea for a song. Within a matter of days, Saxon had written 747 (Strangers In The Night), which would soon become one of the band’s biggest hits and greatest anthems.

Saxon were one of the best bands to come out of that whole era late 1970s-early 1980s new heavy metal wave from the UK. They never got the success as Iron Maiden or Def Leopard. But they were/are a very tight band, saw them live.
They always had crunching riffs. Try out 'Strong Arm of the Law' and 'Wheels of Steel' for starters.
Very catchy. I noticed you both bobbing your heads to this riff...headbangers!

If you're going to look further into Saxon, then you HAVE to listen to "Denim and Leather", "Princess of the Night", The Power and The Glory", Midas Touch", "Warrior", and definitely "The Eagle has Landed".

  • @erikthompson619
    @erikthompson619 Před rokem +1

The lyrics are in fact from two separate songs, randomly spliced together. The verses about the impending plane catastrophe (in turn inspired by a real life power outage and imagining its potential dire consequences), and the chorus about a random meeting at an airport that is sadly shortlived since the two are going for different destinations so nothing could never come of it. Apart from the vague aerial element, the lyrics had nothing whatsoever uniting them - but bizarrely, it worked, and the song remains one of Saxon's most popular from a brilliant, still ongoing career.
Note: Randy Rhoads died in March 1982, about two years after this song was released, so there's no cconnection there.

They are great storytellers in their songs. Don’t bother reviewing The Eagle Has Landed or Dallas 1PM.

I think the figurative interpretation is a bit of a stretch Lex. This is one where I think Brad's literal sense finds its place.

The main riff is really good, but the slow chorus parts and the lyrics kinda suck.

I think Lex is having a touch of "Baby Brain" it's absolutely about an aircraft (747 Jumbo Jet) trying to land only to find there had been a power outage so no landing lights, low on fuel they needed to find another airport capable of handling a big aircraft like a 747

Lex almost ruins their reactions with the ridiculous things she says. The song is about strangers passing each other by at airports etc and moving on with their lives, one stands and stuff and moving on, etc.

The fact that someone told you about Saxon is hilarious. They were like a third-tier UK metal band that had a small cult following. It would be like if someone got into some really obscure hip-hop artist like Funky Four Plus One right around the time that everyone else was getting into Grandmaster Flash and Afrikka Bambatta, or something. NO ONE but maybe one guy in a single high school would have been a Saxon fan.
    Again..........hilarious.

@@DianaDeath LOL! Okay, I exaggerated a little for effect. I actually knew about half a dozen guys at one school who LOOOOVED them. I was mostly unaware of Saxon.

Nah.....most metal fans from back then definitely knew of Saxon. They were one of the leaders of NWOBHM. We all listened to them here in NorCal, but we also had an awesome pirate radio station that played all the import metal before people heard of them. Ask the guys in Metallica if they knew of them. Well, ok, you may not be able to do that.....hahaha

Everyone who listened to metal in the late 70's/early 80's knew about Saxon. Don't be ridiculous
