I think you should make the tips of the jaws farther apart and bulbous. Having sharp tips seems like it makes you hesitant to thrust at someone, and having the jaws open farther would make it easier to get them around your target.
The second design is really good, and would make it really easy for groups of three (2 with mancatchers and one ready with handcuffs) to subdue and detain people without hurting them. My only worry is that the lack of jaws might encourage police to trip or strike with it. The second design would also be very useful for reinforcing lines of riot police, and give them an options for pushing people back instead of hitting with batons, using tasers, and dousing people in pepper spray and mustard gas.
Both are great designs, but i think the first one with bulbous tips would be the winner. Especially with two or more vs one person.

Getting rid of the claw is definitely an improvement, too much complexity just increases the chance of a fault and makes it heavier. As hard as it is to use, imagine how hard it would be if it was just as heavy but the mechanism jammed? No good, better off without it. However, the main flaw with just the crescent is that the curve is far too shallow. The way it seemed like you two kept getting out was by basically twisting it and then stepping past, but that wouldn't be possible if it was more of a semi-circle shape. That's how the ones used by Japanese police are designed, so it's obviously an effective design.
I think cops should absolutely use them, because unlike a taser you can adjust the danger involved. A taser will put the same charge into an elderly woman with a weak heart as it will a 130kg biker fuelled by meth, but with a man catcher you can just be more gentle.

My high school had a plasma cutter for the welding workshop. It wasn’t one u held in your hand tho. It was automated, on a table-like grid. You would input the values and dimensions of whatever you want it to cut, lay the metal out, and the plasma cutter would get to work. Was really cool watching it do its thing. Very precise tool it is.

  • @theteenageengineer

The white spider web stuff is the result of welding galvanized metal. It’s just burned zinc. And the reason you shouldn’t weld galvanized metal is not only that it puts off toxic gas but it also lets off small particles of zinc that are harmful to your lungs if you breathe them in. An N95 mask or a respirator and a well ventilated area will protect you from the fumes good enough that you shouldn’t have to worry about being harmed.

First, this works better with two or more man catchers. As once one is able to get a grapple going. The other can much more easily catch or apply a disabling/guiding force. This also divides the targets ability to resist either of them at any given time. Secondly, while it makes sense to go after the torso. In one on one, focus most of their effort on going after the legs. Making the claws harder to grab while at the same time limiting the targets movement even before the grapple begins. The mechanical claw idea still works but needs to be wider set. Orientating outwards rather than straight. Greatly increasing your chance at encircling a limb or torso. Bonus points for non sharp inward facing barbs that make it harder for the grappled limb or torso to get away or move the claw once in the threatened zone/state. Lastly, the handle and back end portion may need to have bracing features to further increase the users ability to resit being pushed back or allowing the shaft be forced backward past its user.

You should’ve made the spikes on the arms face the other direction. So that they can slide around the body easily without getting caught, and then when you close it, it grips onto them like teeth. Like the one trap in that saw movie where the chick has to stick her hand into a box thing to get an antidote or whatever and gets her arm stuck because of the reversed blades. Can go in but can’t go out.

For the last 5 min section, asuming the same scenarios are in place (1v1 melee combat), I imagine the best strat for the man-catcher weilder would be to pin the agressor, but do not use your weight to keep them pinned, for the angle of leverage neccessary puts you in range of your flailing opponent. Rather manage as much leverage as you can, and if they try to escape, wait for them to be getring up and strike hard.

Instead of metal claws, use a loop of cable or rope on the end, kinda like a mechanical lasso. You could use an anti locking belay device or something similar so when you get the tension on the person you can lock it into place pretty easily. It'll be a tighter fit and work with more body types. You'll have to get it over someone's head but if you catch they're neck, arm, or leg it seems just as viabke. The whole loop idea just seems more versatile to me.

for the more basic mancatcher to work, you need a longer handle, so that you dont need to fear any melee attacks. a helmet will also help. then you need to charrge them really hard and leanve them firmly pinned against the wall. if your handle is longer you will have a longer lever that kind of helps even up the game. also get 5 friends with other mancatchers. lets see how them grannies like that.

Hey there, 15 year Pipefitter here with welding knowledge. That death spiderweb your seeing is definitely common when welding galvanized materials. Typically you grind as much of the galvanized material off as possible until you get to the base metal before welding. Working with structural steel sometimes which is typically hot dipped galvanized, you end up grinding off somewhere around 1/8” thickness of galvanized material. Its definitely not good to breath in, but it also weakens the structural integrity of your weld if you leave to much of it. If you’re welding over it, it tends to create a lot of popping and extra sparks flying. It can also kind of catch on fire and burn a greenish color. Nice project by the way!

The spiderweb-like substance you saw is likely zinc oxide fumes. Galvanized pipes are coated with zinc to prevent corrosion. When the zinc coating is heated during welding, it can vaporize and react with the oxygen in the air to form zinc oxide. This zinc oxide can appear as a white, wispy, spiderweb-like smoke.

I'm not even sure why drinking milk would work in the first place. Breathing in fumes would affect your lungs in the first place. You drink milk, not breathe it in. Calcium would also take a while before your body would extract it from the smaller intestine into your blood, that's why when in hospitals, you got IV drops.
Having to eat or drink the medicine to work is very inefficient and too slow, and the medicine being Milk as an example.
Another fun fact, to bind Calcium with Zinc, it requires them to have negative and positive charges. Calcium in Milk has a stable charge, in other words, they wouldn't even be able to bond in the first place.

It could be improved with a spring and ratchet mechanism. Maybe put a button on the front that touches the person. When you push it onto them the spring is released pushing the inner tube back, you get the added force of the spring and the ratchet holds it closed at any point so you don't need to worry about size of the jaws when closed.

I feel like if you were to make another version of this, a metal one isn’t a bad idea, but instead of making the “claws” so wide and thick, you should layer two thinner sheets of metal on the top and bottom, then bolt it on on top of and on the bottom of the crescent. I feel like you had the right idea with the closing mechanism, but something that is lighter. The handle idea was a good and I feel like that was somewhere that you could probably find more ways to improve the handle grip. I feel like because of the improper center of gravity also hold it back a lot. When alexa pushes down the man catcher, I see that you can’t really counter act that force too well, but elongating the stick and making a stock for your shoulder to lean in to would be very useful for applying more weight and pressure onto the aggressor. Also the fact that you could also turn the handle into a two piece is very cool. I think that this is probably one of the more realistic designs that you’ve done, that could actually be beneficial to police departments all across the world, probably besides America because we have a problem with police shootings or people shooting people.
