I recently moved back to the United States and was shocked to see the number of young people like me on the streets. While I understand that homelessness exists in other places I've been, I never encountered so many young, able-bodied individuals living on the streets until coming back to the US. I’m a social worker in Seattle who primarily works with the homeless population. One common misconception about homeless people is that they chose that life, yet when we offer them an opportunity for housing every one jumps at the opportunity. Homelessness is a housing problem first and foremost. Another misconception is that rising homeless populations are a sign of economic downturn, but in reality it's the opposite. Economic booms cause housing prices to go up and invite wealthier individuals to move in for employment, putting many individuals out on the street. When cities grow and their housing market doesn't grow to accommodate them the city will have an increase in homeless populations.

      do you not remember the housing market crash in 2008? this is a multi-dimensional issue, and although gentrification causes rising prices that keep a lot of people from purchasing houses in certain areas, to say that that a better economy is a bigger problem is absurd.

    • @elanbus
      @elanbus Před 7 dny +8

      @@frikghorgan I never said a better economy was a bad thing, that's absurd. But this is part of the growing pains of a city who’s hosting market can't keep up with the growing demand thanks to many factors like zoning regulations. I know gentrification is a sign of prosperity but when affordable housing isn't made to balance of the displaced then cities will inevitably have more homelessness. The fact of the matter is that ignorance and contempt drive many to believe that homeless people choose this life, but that's just another narrative to confirm their contemptuous biases.

I know homeless people I did a lot to try and help them with food from the hotbox we were gonna toss anyway and I can confidently say they are lazy, incompetent and usually mentally ill they make more begging than I did at minimum wage even though I made rent and don’t want to be in society. Get off your moral high horse because your ass probably hasn’t helped any homeless people even if he has money he doesn’t have an obligation to help them lmao if you force rich people to do that our society will collapse. Tough love in asking them the hard questions about themselves is how we are gonna help these people not treating them like victims and morally highroading to feel good about ourselves while not doing anything. Would you prefer the video wasn’t made and a truthful and very accurate representation of the problem in that video not exist because it’s mean to film and “take advantage” of them even though the social workers in that city are doing just that. And by not raising awareness about the true state of homelessness the democrats will continue to be able to sweep the problem away like it doesn’t exist that’s why I don’t buy into movements like these it’s so vapid and stupid to cancel someone because they didn’t help enough when everyone angry at them also isn’t helping. I agree with you and I also hate those who say stuff like that about public transit. I am a college student in San Luis Obispo, California. Since I am an out of state student from Indiana, I don't have a car. It's too expensive to keep a car in California, with an extra $25 per month for parking at my apartment complex and I think an extra $600 per year for university parking. Not counting gas prices and car insurance. For college students, riding the city bus is free. For everyone else, the bus ticket is $1.50, and the monthly pass is $40. There are also various discounts for seniors, children, the disabled, etc. I am in my third year of architecture school, so I live off campus. I take the bus to and from campus. At certain times of day, the entire bus is filled to the brim with college students. I know people who take the bus despite having a car to save on gas. I was homeless for a month or so I was between moving cities and needed to be back and forth so I stayed in a shelter for that time. I had just bought a new phone. A man had attacked me on the streets, took all my belongings beat me up that included my wallet with most of my Id and cards with the little money I had on me, my glasses were broken in the process couldn't see or fight back. They tapped my cards and I had to go through the fraud process and had to miss out on this new job because I had no ID, money or work tickets anymore. I was fortunate enough where I got help from a family member. I could have just asked for help and avoided all this but not all homeless people are out there on drugs ..but without any identification you are screwed for trying to do anything you are waiting weeks. It's basically a fallacy where you decide the world must be a just place because it would be mentally distressing for you to accept that it isn't. I was homeless, thankfully I'm in a much better place now.
    But, there's always been "journalists" exploiting the homeless.
    The BBC were awful for it here in Swansea the UK for a long time.
    It's cheap (practically free) to produce. They shine a light on "undesirables" then leave, exploiting them, making money off them in the process and then leaving with the police pissed of at them highlighting vulnerable people who apparently make the city look bad, so they amp up their presence and push the homeless into the shadows, where the problems continue, in a more dangerous environment.
    I knew one girl who was filmed for a homeless documentary and was told "come back when you've had more to drink so you'll be more entertaining "

    I grew up in a pretty privileged position, but when I got older I started struggling with mental health stuff. Even coming from a circumstance that enabled me to get better access to care than most, getting help was a nightmare. Not only that, I was often living among people who DIDN'T have the same level of support. It was really eye opening and honestly it's a very complicated issue but to sum it up briefly, there ARE things in place to help people but they are SO poorly implemented and often run by people who are payed very little and receive very little training. And that's IF you even manage to get help because unless you have private insurance, getting set up with disability/social security is a nightmare for most people (I've heard stories of from friends with serious issues like severe bipolar or debilitating anxiety attacks being told "you don't look disabled.")
    Honestly the "they don't' want help" explanation is not just ignorant, but it's super lazy... it doesn't take much, even without interacting with anyone in these positions to see the problem with that. Why would anyone WANT to live like that. Sure working sucks (especially minimum wage jobs) but it sure as hell better than living on the street where people treat you like trash and you're constantly in danger of dying of exposure, overdose, or crime related incidents.

      He deceptively downplays all the legitimate solutions to homelessness (affordable housing) and instead claims it's a police issue (when police have consistently been given more money and power to deal with it and it's only gotten worse).

A lot of businesses left, but not because of the protests or spooky homeless people.
