If you’ve ever shopped for silk, you’ve heard or read the term momme. Today we are taking a deep dive into understanding what momme means as a weight measurement in silk fabric.
Today we’re going to explain what momme means, and why you need to understand it before buying a silk pillowcase or sheets.

Sometimes that means demystifying silk-related terms and definitions. That’s what we’ll be doing today with a discussion of the word “momme.”
You will hear people pronounce the words either as MOM-AY or MOM-EE. We say momme because that is the way our lead weaving engineer says it.
Momme is a unit of weight measurement for silk. The higher the momme, the heavier and denser the weave of the silk.
With a 30 momme silk pillowcase, for example, the silk fibers are woven thicker and more densely than with a 19 momme silk pillowcase. You will also be able to feel the weight difference.
Higher momme silk fabrics are also made with thicker yarn which adds to the weight. In this way, momme is somewhat similar to thread count for sheets.
Looking at the momme weight of some popular silk fabrics can give you a better feel for what it means. You can see that organza and chiffon are very light silk as a rule. Charmeuse is the same weave we use for our silk pillowcases and sheets.

Can air flow differ depending on the momme number? Which one has better air flow?

Real silk is naturally temperature regulating!The lightest and most breathable momme weights we carry are 19 and 22 . 30 is a heavier weight silk and thus can feel slightly less breathable than the others.

On what temperature should it be washed? Can the 30mm be washed on higher ones that the 19mm?

We recommend washing all silk with cool water regardless of momme to preserve the integrity of the silk.
