When it comes to health, beauty, AND safety, silk bedding has it all over cotton. Stay tuned to learn more about why silk is a great natural choice.
At Mulberry Park Silks, we love answering questions about silk. One of the things we get asked about most often is the differences between cotton and silk sheets. We are happy to elaborate.
It’s true: cotton is a popular fabric for bed linen of all types. But silk offers some distinct advantages.
First, silk is a protein-based fiber with a unique structure. Silk fibers are coated with a layer of a protein known as sericin. Sericin is a natural moisturizer. In fact, sericin can be found in many high-end hair and skin products. Sericin is also antimicrobial and antifungal.
Silk fiber also has a unique structure with a hollow center. This hollow center traps air as insulation. This enables silk to regulate body temperature in both cool and warm conditions.
Silk is protein-based and a natural moisturizer that conditions your hair and skin.
Cotton is known for being absorbent. In fact you can think of a cotton pillowcase as a reverse conditioner, especially if you have coarse, curly, or wiry hair.
Now think about all the time, money and effort you spend to nourish and condition your hair… only to have it undone overnight by your cotton pillowcase pulling out all that moisture from your hair - ugh.
And silk is practically friction-free. Hair gently glides across the surface of a silk pillowcase which prevents tangles and breakage. Also, silk makes a better choice for anyone with delicate hair or hair loss.
The rough fibers in a cotton pillowcase can snag hair and cause tangles, frizz, breakage, and bed head.
As we just mentioned, cotton is very drying to hair. The same goes for your skin. A cotton pillowcase is absorbent, and it can undo the work of all the pricey facial moisturizer you use.
But a silk pillowcase helps your skin retain moisture. It also reduces friction on your delicate facial skin. Helping to prevent sleep creases and reduce wrinkles. Silk is also hypoallergenic and non-irritating. It’s gentle on sensitive and even acne-prone skin.
Because of the hollow center, silk fibers are better at regulating body temperature than cotton. When you sweat, silk wicks away moisture and keeps you cool; when you're not, it insulates and maintains warmth. This is why silk sheets are great for staying warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
When cotton sheets get damp, they absorb moisture and lose their ability to insulate or cool.
This makes silk a much better choice, especially for anyone who sleeps hot.
