Algonquin Park's Meanest Link - PART 1: The Big East

- Starting at Algonquin Outfitters - Oxtongue Lake, Alex and Noah spent the first 2.5 days outside of the park which included a quick stop in Huntsville, as well as a 66 km "paddle" up the Big East River.
The Big East River is a large variable in the route and has proved to be a critical factor in determining if the pair would be able to finish the link on schedule. Attempting this section in the driest time of the year was also a concern. Would there be enough water?
Route:
Oxtongue Lake, Oxtongue River, Lake of Bays, South Portage Road, Peninsula Lake, Fairy Lake, Muskoka River, Hunter’s Bay, Lake Vernon, Big East River Delta, Big East River, McCraney Creek.

Love your newer stuff but it's cool to go back and see the progression. This one's still pretty hardcore!
"Until the next one" - Boy's
I can feel that. You leave a outing, no matter the length and all you can think about on the way home is the next trip.
You four are a inspiration.

Lucky i know your channel, cuz if I didn't and came to a series named "the meanest link" and it was two guys paddling to Boston pizza for beers, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have stuck around. 😃
hahahaha valid point for sure
Great footage. Looking forward to part 2.
Great Job. Great Video, looking forward to part 2
Folks, this is a great video! Well done! I look forward to more.
I love these videos, it really helped us prepare for the link and attempt it this year.
Awesome! Looking forward to the rest
Awesome part 1 guys. You really captured the torture that is the Big East.
Looking forward to part 2!!
Thanks! We always find it is the most difficult parts that are the best for filming. The problem with that is that usually you are using your full mental capacity to deal with the situation and its hard to get the energy to stop and get the camera out. At the same time, sometimes getting the camera out can make you laugh at those situations and help you get through them knowing you will have a great video (memory) of it!
Awesome. Gonna watch this later tonight
another great video thanks
I was very happy to see this new video that you put Out Boy on a lot of work you guys put into this.
Looks like very hard work, looking forward to the rest. Moving on to the next episode now. Thanks. Paul.
It was the most difficult trip we had ever done and really opened our minds up to what our bodies were able to endure. Glad to hear you are enjoying the series!
Your canoe is made in my home state, Minnesota. The kids and I used to rent them for our Boundary Waters trips. Now we all own our own canoes. Mine is a Langford Northwind made in Canada, the country of my birth.
That route sure was a challenge! Good for you for keeping on keeping on!
Kudos for continuing to pull the cameras out with regularity, despite what must have been very tough conditions. I know when the paddling gets late in the day, the desire to say "the hell with it" with regards to filming is very strong. I find when carrying a drone, the setups are even tougher by day's end. Looking forward to part 2.
Absolutely! And its always the most difficult parts of a trip that look the best on camera. Can be tough to get the energy to setup when you need full mental capacity to do the task at hand. At the same time, sometimes it helps you get through those tough moments knowing that you will have a great memory of it after with the video footage.
I finally had time to watch this first segment. Impressive but I have to say pizza and a beer at a restaurant along the way is envious. That “sand cliff” at about 6:30 minutes in is an esker, glacial deposit, common along many waterways in the north country. Nice work guys.
Haha we were not planning on doing this but it just happened to work out. We were behind schedule so originally it was an idea to get food quickly. Swing in, grab pizza and keep going. Then the pizza wasn't ready by the time we pulled in so we grabbed a beer. I don't think we will ever have a moment like that on a trip again....thanks for watching
That is the best video yet! The effort you put into your canoe trip is very impressive, that is why I subscribed, thank you.
Appreciate the sub Robert!
Loving this guys!
Great video guys! Can’t wait to see the rest!
This is awesome! What an adventure! Looking forward to part 2
Always great to see local stuff

Very nice video!
Man! The days for me to take this type of trip vanished about 30 years ago. I congratulate your stamina. Brian 78
Thanks a lot Brian!
Good on you guys for doing this! The Meanest Link is a route myself and a couple others have talked about doing but haven’t set aside the time yet. Look forward to the rest of the series. Cheers, Johnathon
Thanks for watching! Hopefully this video series will be helpful for future linkers like yourself. That was our goal
Awesome Vid!
Nice! So Co is clutch on trips to Algonquin.
lookin' forward to this series for a while!
hardcore trips.
Thanks for watching Jeff
Nice going. You guys have good stamina for all that lining and portaging. I was fishing below that dam that you guys portaged passed last year. Very rugged country. You should have brought the rods. LOL
Quite a slog. Looked like fun though. Looking forward to part 2. Thanks. :)
There were definitely lots of slogging moments on this one. Thanks for watching!
Love it there where you guys are starting the video i have a bunch of videos on that same exact lake. Awesome Videos guys keep up the great work
Great video boys. Epic trip
Thanks for watching!
Looks like a great trip! Hope I get to do Algonquin soon!

The Boston Pizza scene alone is worth a like! Nice one!
You guy's rock! Cheers from Germany
Thanks Dom, cheers from Canada
Awesome vid guys! Putting on those contacts in the bush was the sole reason behind why I got laser eye surgery. Makes me cringe!
Can't wait to see part 2!
Thanks buddy, after this trip, I'm considering laser eye surgery lol
I'm looking to do this trip 2021. Big east river makes me most nervous. Never did upstream wading having a canoe. You boys are beasts
Great video guys!! Stoked to see the rest of the trip!
Thanks Chris!
Lol I feel your pain when it comes to putting in contacts in the morning with no mirror great vid
Currently looking into Lasik haha
So beautiful
Excellent video, outstanding production. And humourous. Want to see more Contact Craziness in Part 2. You guys are great. But will the harmony last? Stay tuned.
Haha you have us excited to watch our own series! Thanks for watching!
I have not yet done the Meanest Link... Looks like a great time despite all the work... Denns, Canoehound Adventures
Hooray for Snickers.
the branded lifejackets are sweet
Where's the looking for adventure song? Re-watched your Temagami trip before I headed into Solace/Yorston River/Ames Creek/Florence and I ended up singing it the whole time. Can't wait for part 2.
haha! Sam that is great, that is a Temagami classic. Thanks for watching!
awesome journey, guys. Can't wait for part 2. What time of year did you take this trip?
Thanks Mike, we started the trip on August 3rd.
The greatest Camper is Here!!!!!!
great vid boys, looking forward to the rest. Did the big east chew up a bit of the hull of that nice boat? lol stay well
The boat definitely has a couple of battle scars after this one. Thanks for watching!
Great video! What date did you start the trip?
Cool beginning to what looks like a great trip. What are Noah's "bushwhacking oats"?
Nate
I can't STAND trying to get those dailies in. Feel for you.
I really don’t know why you use contacts . Just use your eye glasses and protect your eyes from what ever. Your 18 foot canoe only weighs probably 40lb or not much more. We did that with canvas covered canoes 80 lbs 15 footers . And 80 lb canvas canoe canoe packs . The gear now days is so much lighter. We did north of Superior rivers and 150 mile paddle. And would loose 25/30 Lbs of body weight on some of those trips. It separates the men from the boys . Great memories. Take lots of pictures and enjoy everything about your trip. Thanks 🇨🇦👍
Where did you put back in on the Oxtongue? My cabin is the first entry after the white water
Have either of you tried poling a canoe? I have also seen two polers in the same boat, I have yet to try that but would think it would be of great benefit in some of those up stream sloggs. cool trip will watch them all.
I have gotten into it recently, and in hindsight, it would have been a great addition to the work up The Big East. As always, thanks for watching buddy! - Noah
@@NorthernScavenger Eddy hopping, you can be pulled up stream, pick the easiest path and get it done, shallow water can be problematic, though.
Well, this ended way too soon. Looking forward to the rest! What model Eureka is that?
Thanks, this is the Bella Coola 3 person. Great tent!
I do not miss fumbling with contacts out in the bush lol
Your username and avatar is awesome.
TOUR du PARK lol thanks 😁
Amazing
Currently looking into Lasik haha!
I was just about to give you a positive comment on always wearing your life jackets. Oh well.
On one trip we saw a lightning storm over lake Superior that was 120 miles away.
we are rewatching this series got a question...everyone does the Meanest Link the same direction...is that a "rule" or would it not make sense to go the other way so you go downstream on the Big East. ...just wondering
Haha great question! It is most often done this way because of all the other rivers you travel along. As difficult as the Big East was, there were a lot of other rivers we got to travel down.
Where r u guys from?
PFDs stay ON for beers at Boston pizza
Safety first
Don't end up like Ned Beatty! hahaha
You guys need a pole would of made trip upriver easier
It pains my back to see them put canoe down instead of leaning it on branch.
guys...
No. Thanks.
Haha next time we paddle down the river..
Oh come on guys I know you can do it again you know what it's like you go with a smaller canoe it's a simple as that now there's a challenge for you
Haha maybe we will one day!
Great Video, just came back from portaging there. Check out my video if you got a chance. I've also liked and subscribed to your channel. Keep up the great work.
Take your life jacket off in the restaurant.
