    I had this car too when I was young. I loved race looking cars. I used to do big races with all my cars. I had a mellow yellow car and a black one that looked just like it but it had different markings on it. I had over a couple thousand of cars in my childhood time

    Im pretty sure I got that car with an oval track set in the 70s. That brought back a lot of memories. No video games back then. The cars that came with the original Criss Cross Crash are awesome too. EDIT... Sure enough I was able to track it down. It came with with the Thundershift 500 set... haha. Great set!

    great job! i dig these bringing the car back to showroom condition style vod's immensely, in my customs and restos i found taking the extra step of polishing the body before primer or paint goes a loooong ways towards a smoother than factory finish. take the rear bumper of your finished car here, theres a bit of flash along the bumper, a dremel and polishing wheel/compound/toothpaste(the white stuff) smoothes those out or removes them totally.
    thanx for sharing the process with us ;) i learned something new today as a bonus ;)

    Nice job! Just getting into the restore end myself. This is the first of you videos I have watched. I’d like to offer a couple of tips for using decals if I may. First, polish the paint after it has cured out, they work so much better with a super smooth surface. And always top coat water slides. Microscale offers great products, and Krylon Mkrystal Clear is a real good clear laquer I have used on decals in the past. A substitute for oven baking is use a food dehydrator. They are fairly cheap, and you can even get ones with adjustable temp control and timers. As for the chrome base, I have been more that impressed with the Molotow chrome pens. Especially for small areas like the one spot on the rear bumper.

    • @WheelsNThangs
      @WheelsNThangs  Před 6 lety

      Thanks for the tips! I've since had success with decals, I think these needed the clear but were supposedly already ready. Guess not. Ha! I use Molotow chrome pens in a lot of the videos, just not this one.

  • @Mr67Stanger

    Do you think the paint stripper you use is better than say Rustoleum ? It's what I use now and the smell is bad and it's hard on everything around it. Water Slide decals should be clear coated before soaking. who ever sold them to you should have told you this or done it before sale. I use water slide all the time they usually don't break down like that. Its what I used on your Van.

    • @WheelsNThangs
      @WheelsNThangs  Před 7 lety +1

      Hmm.. I did not know this existed! Do I just search for a flat bottom tap?

    • @jampy00TV1
      @jampy00TV1 Před 7 lety +4

      Typically called a bottoming or bottom tap. goo.gl/vRLJEg
      As the name implies it allows you to tap a hole that does not go through the material. Typically if you use a through tap you do not get a good thread at the base (bottom) of the hole due to the taper. A bottoming tap will eliminate this and provide a much more stable thread for the screw to adhere with.

    Planning to take up Hot Wheels restoration as a retirement hobby in a few years, so have begun purchasing some "projects". What about finding parts? I noted Red Line Shop has some windshields and hoods, but not all models are available. Are there other sources for parts? Question 2: Can original torsion axles with bearings be replaced? Parts? Thanks.

    • @WheelsNThangs
      @WheelsNThangs  Před 7 lety

      I've only found them on the RLS and eBay. You can replace the axles and bearings but I've only seen them on eBay as well.

    Suggestion: On your windshields, there is a plastic polish that I use and it works great. Its called Maguiar's Plast-X, Works wondering on windshields that are old, dirty, and cloudy.....Also, I heard you bake your castings after painting....I do as well, but I heard you bake at 220 degrees for 30 minutes? Isn't that a bit to hot?....I've experienced baking upwards of 200 degrees and for 20 minutes and the paint started to bubble........I do not go past 150-175 degrees for 30 minutes then let cool for another 30 .........minutes.......There are also others on EBAY that have great waterslide decals for Redlines that are very well done.....Great job and good luck...

    • @WheelsNThangs
      @WheelsNThangs  Před 6 lety +1

      Great tips! Actually metal polish works well for the windows as well believe it or not. I've baked every car 220 for 30 minutes with no bubbling at all. Maybe it's the type of paint?

    • @MrLowdog5
      @MrLowdog5 Před 6 lety

      I get all my paint from Redlineshop.com.....and I'm used a small convention oven I bought from Walmart for $18 bucks.....I'll have to try that medal polish.....but the plast-x works really well....

    What is a redline

    • @kjamison5951
      @kjamison5951 Před 6 lety

      Wyatt 101 It refers to the original Hot Wheels Cars which have a thin red line around the walls of the tires. They also have removable tires (small white plastic bearing on the axle) and the axles are crimped in such a way that there is something like suspension on them. You can press them down slightly and when you let go, it kind of bounces back up again. Later models which have the red line on the tire but that cannot be removed, are not technically Red Lines.
