    as a kid it was great to be able to have these toys of one's favorite cars. The condition prior to the restorations is a testament as to how much playability they have.

    Great job guy! I had a red Custom Firebird back then. I'm still kicking myself after 40 years have passed that I gave my collection away like an idiot. BUT, I am in the process of getting them back again slowly but surely!

    Seeing past the small imperfections on the casting itself this thing came out sweet man. The windshield looks brand new!!! Missed some tail light details.
    Excellent work as usual. Good video 👍🏽

      Thank you! Yeah, I totally forgot the tails were painted originally. I painted them after the fact but didn't want to film again. Takes too much time :)

    I feel as though you matched the color perfectly! Plus those dents may look bad in ones eyes, but I see them as how this car has survived 50 years

    Cada restaurador/renovador tiene su toque particular. El suyo es evidentemente la calidad del uso de la lija y el pulido y la fina terminación de la pintura.
    Un hermoso trabajo: gracias por compartirlo con nosotros.

    No matter the craftsman, artist, woodworker....we are always more critical of our own work that are others. This is a beautiful effort....I love these videos for a couple of reasons. (1) they are incredibly Zen-like and relaxing to watch; (2) they take us back to our childhood; and (3) for some miraculous reason, at 63, I still have all of my and my brothers 200+ Redline Hot Wheels, Matchbox and Johnny Lightning cars. I'm retired now, but between my decoy carving, backpacking the AT, and antique refinishing, mountain biking and fly fishing hobbies, I intend to restore a couple of my die cast cars. Thank you----extremely nice job on restoring what was always one of my favorite Hot Wheels!

    • @WheelsNThangs
      @WheelsNThangs  Před 5 lety

      Thank you, I really appreciate it! Funny is I started doing this for two reasons. 1st was the grandson, the 2nd reason is when I retire years from now I want to build the stack of models I've acquired over the years so I thought this would make good practice.

    I love this restoration. What I am curious about is why you do not use any body filler to take care of the deep divots for all the hard work you put into these cars? There is another gentlemen I came across who does similar restorations and he uses fillers which make a huge difference. Thanks for your great content!

    • @WheelsNThangs
      @WheelsNThangs  Před 6 lety

      I don'[t use filler with the Spectraflame paint because it would show through the paint. This type of paint is pretty transparent and show every tiny detail. Primer isn't an option because it will change the color.

    You should look at the electropolishing process baremetalHW uses. Super quick and easy and it will led you down the path of plating your own stuff. Even if i you do that already, the electropolishing is awesome.

    Goodness gracious when I was a kid growing up back in the day the abuse we dealt out on these poor cars ! we all had our speciality torture for the poor car, mine was to crack it with my Louisville slugger across to the other side of the river and go retrieve it, and if you didn't make it then oh well you lost your car. I didn't loose many but your firebird made most of my hot wheels look like broken down pieces of diecast minus windshield glass of any kind lol

    @AnomalousOne1401 Před 6 lety

    I really appreciate and enjoy your videos and this one is no exception. My question is regarding the imperfections in the body like on the trunk area and wheel wells. Is it possible to apply a small amount of a body filler to those areas? I'd be the first to admit that it would be major overkill and impractical to do so but considering how much you have invested into a hobby that you obviously love, who is to judge what is overkill and impractical anyway? Thanks for the videos and keep them coming.

    It looks just like it would, brand new in 1968. Me and my guys in '69/70 would always say "yo' momma" jokes pointing the flaws out in brand new cars when we met up on Saturday afternoons. Stuff like, "yo momma can't drive she put a dent in your fender" or "yo daddy can't wax a car without damaging it" or "y'all got a new car discount because your window was cracked before you drove it home". One guy even bought a Custom Volkswagen missing a headlight and the other not molded correctly AND a wheel that would stay on because it was cracked in the bearing area. He got hazed real bad but we took care of him with a spare from another older car.
    All those flaws give Hot Wheels itz character. The Firebird's trunk area always had waves in it. Mostly from the post being sandwiched down. Nice job !

    Cool car. Love the Pontiac front end/grill. In the video, the first time the pit on the trunk is visible to us is during your dry sanding with 800 grit. At this stage, is it possible to fill that in with anything? Maybe a dab of JB Weld on a flat toothpick or something? And then file it down and re-sand?
