- One of the original sweet 16, the custom Corvette is a collector favorite. In this video I will go through how I restore this car to its former glory.

As a kid, we used to bend the wheels down intentionally because if you could get a car to ride on just the outside edge of the wheels, It would eliminate some of the friction, and they were considerably faster on a piece of flex track.
Tterribilis You nailed it. Was going to say the same thing.
Getting some crazy camber in them babys
#cambergang
Yes indeed, that's why we bent the wheels in. Fastest car wins!!!!!!!!
Nice restoration 👍
Hahaha im the only one commenting here hmmm by the way you should make a custom Van
I am no expert but that looks convincingly original to me. I like the effort to not alter in a restoration like this.
Another work of art. You are making many people think twice about paying $200.00-$400.0 for a vintage mint.
Love the zinc plating process, really makes the difference overall. Outstanding results as usual. Thanks for another awesome demonstration.
This car is one of my favorites that you've shared. That red looks incredible.
Finally I come across a restoration that matches the redline wheel trim, and a gorgeous Stingray at that! Today is a good day.
Damn fine looking car. Your videos never disappoint.
I've watched this one before, but it never gets old. There is something about a red Corvette. Great work.
SU-------PERB!!! I love that you are aiming to get as close to the original finish on your redline restores. There's something about
that '68 spectra that just says hotwheels.
Thanks for another stellar video Sir. I'm sure I speak for us all when I say we never ever get tired of your presentation and
innovation
This was the first HW's model I owned..
Here in the UK They seemed rare and exotic...
I used to spin the wheels and time how long they ran for with a stopwatch..
🤔..Wow, the 10yr old me really knew how to have a wild time...😂👍
Great channel...
idk.... I wish kids today were that scientific...
They're 'rare & exotic' over here too! Lol!
@@baremetalHW do you do regular hot wheels if so can you
My father taught me cars, from back in the day when you could start swapping a motor out in the morning and drive it later that evening. I always enjoyed the paint/body work more than engines, but these days have no method or means to work on full size vehicles. I do believe you've given me the inspiration to do paint and body work on scale cars. How perfect is it, a few hours here, a few hours there, blood sweat and tears, all in the palm of your hand.
Appreciate the work you put into these videos, not only fun to watch but inspirational as well.
I've never watched this type of video before but I gotta say it was a very fast 7 minutes. The level of detail and thought you put into every single aspect of the restoration was amazing. Like how you're careful not to make it too perfect for historical accuracy. Quality stuff man good work.
Great restoration of a sweet car!
I usually do plastic model kits but I might give this a go. It looks very rewarding.
Red Corvettes are always loved and the rear camber issues are true to the real deal lol Nice work!
I’m hoping that you stay around and keep making videos of your restorations. I miss our friends at Die-cast Resurrection. I enjoy all of you guys.
Sweet little red Corvette! Man, who woulda thunk I’d be addicted to a soft-spoken video series about tiny car restorations? I am completely addicted. Great stuff!
"Kids bent the axle down i guess idk thoose things keep me up at night" that phrase made my day lol , great video as always really like this corvette, when child i had one similar on blue although a new realese from 2000
Really good job on restoring that 'Vette! The results look really beautiful!! You know, I wouldn't be surprised if anyone who got a C3 Corvette new in 1968 also got a Hot Wheels Custom Corvette that was the same color as the real Corvette they got from the dealership!!
Again, excellent. Good to see retro stuff being rejuvenated.
I really like this one and how you are trying to restore it to the way it came out from the factory. Yeah, this car would been stunning to have all the imperfections removed, but I like it better this way. This is how we remembered them.
The restoration adds more value than I expected. I can see why though because it gives collectors the opportunity to own an original 1968 car that they might not be able to own otherwise, especially not in amazing condition!
Omg ..what a hot lil red Corvette! Great job! As always ! 👍👍
I love how the old cars had suspension. I recently bought one of the HWC Original 16 cars (1967 Barracuda) and was amazed by how much better the cars use to be!
That is soooo cool. I love watching your videos because I learn so much history of the cars you restore
Wheels curling down is a real conundrum. Many of my early cars had that, and I never pulled them down as a kid. I still have all my original 16's, unrestored, as played with. Wish i still had them in the packages. I was 8 when Hot Wheels were released. Ironically, my very first one is in the best shape, a gold Mustang. Great video, Thanks.
It really is strange... I see it all the time from people that really took good care of their cars...
I don’t normally comment but this is one of my favourite results from the many of your videos I’ve watched. Beautiful.
Just a note of FYI
I am a collector from way back, I bought this model new when it came out as did lot of my friends. I still have it and it's near perfect still. You did a fantastic job! Nice work. But I think I can shead so light on a question you had. You asked about the wheels being bent down on some cars. At the time there was some magazines "cartoons" and "hotrod cartoons" they were like mad magazine but about cars. When they would draw a car in motion to show it's power it would be raised in the front and the wheels bent in together we as boys tried to emulate that so we bent them down. Keep up the good work and thank you. Rick
"Its just something that keeps me up at night"😄 Good restoration man
That zinc plating is a game changer on top of finding the sweet spot. Keep it up!
"These are the things that keep me up at night" apparently I am not alone thinking about that kind of stuff!
It's so satisfying to see these little cars get restored back to their prime. Excellent video as always!
Gotta be honest I never knew this was a hobby at all tell I found this channel. And now I'm hooked
I think the fact that you went with the fresh off the card look instead of the usual better than original look makes this a master level restoration. It really looks brand new. Factory flaws & all! I bet your videos have inspired lots of people to pick up this hobby. Sure got me hooked on it! Lol! Still gotta get a new camera so I can make some proper videos though. Also gotta make me an electro-polish/plating setup too. Soon...
I think that is the best you've done ever! I like the other ones, but I really love this restoration!! Awesome!
I personally feel all corvettes should be red. So this restoration is awesome!
I have a red corvette that needs attention. I got the red Spectraflame from the RedLine shop and I am looking forward to a time when I can give it as much attention as you have, even including the zinc plating. Thank you for another superb video!
Absolutely stunning,gorgeous colour,well done.
“These are the things that keep me up at night” 😂😂
Man, there's just something about the Stingray isn't there? The curves and lines that are almost like an updated art deco aesthetic, it's slightly organic form makes it kind of look like a living creature more than a machine, powerful but also compact and nimble, it's a beautiful little car, and it's a real joy to see a master like you at his work. And you just gotta love that rich, glossy gorgeous paint job, really great work as always.
Wow , what a great restoration job. The vette looks amazing. Well done
I have watched all your videos, still dont believe how satisfying your videos are, love em all
So, my theory on the axles being bent down is the opposite. They're always bend upward by kids pressing down while playing; as you noted. But then, when off their wheels that bend upward free-rotates downward as the weight of the wheel, on that now-bent axle, pulls them down. Hopefully that'll keep you from being up at night...at least that's how I sleep better. ;-) Great work and my sons and I love watching!!
Bless you and your channel. This Vette looks amazing.
I love your restoration videos! I’ve been binge watching them a lot these past few days.
Justice Koester bruh same
Looks great 👍🏼 Thanks for making the time to get more vids out there - always a fascinating watch.
Another excellent build and that red I personally think is perfect, nice clean look to the car . Brilliant job.
you are 100 percent right about not polishing to a mirror finish. this looks much more like an original sweet sixteen restoration.
Its fun learning with you and not just from you.
These are the things that keep me up at night... funny.
Awesome restoration of an iconic Hot Wheel car!
Great vid,,,,I live in England so I grew up with Matchbox/Corgi/Husky,,,Mattel weren't so popular until 80s here, now I'm in luv with them,,,I collect modern Hotwheels and get some from swap meets,,,but watching your vid's on the Holly grail of these cars Redlines is pure eye candy,, Thanx for a great vid and wishing you, family followers a great week,,,,
I am not even kidding you literally built my dream car
Beautiful restoration. I really like the zinc plating.
We used to race these down the run-off drains at school... it used to be pretty competitive, with some races being for the actual cars... I had a pretty good collection by the time I left school, but as happens, the collection remained in a small bin when I left home and my dear old dad (RIP) eventually threw the bin out after numerous requests for me to come and pick them up... oh how my heart is filled with regret in my later years haha... I would have cheerfully invested in renovation equipment and recorded my own makeover efforts for CZcams... I could really use a hot tub time machine right now haha...
😕
Love watching all of your work.
Thanks for posting
Absolutely gorgeous restoration!!
Beautiful job. The red really makes it.
Thank you including some pricing info. I know I’ve been overpaying a little for the older cars. It’s nice to have an expert opinion provide a realistic price range. Beautiful work, as always 👍🏻
You do amazing work on these redlines. 👍
Outstanding work especially on this one in particular looks like you just got it out of the package
What a perfect restoration. What a beautyfull colour. This corvette is a masterpiece. Definitly.
I cant thank u enough for uploading more often, I love watching educational videos and from my experience of playing with hot wheels I always tried to customize them, I never was really good at it but now I am thanks to you❤
That car is drop dead gorgeous... you are amazing!
brilliant end result and another great save!
Positively gorgeous! Interesting factoid on this reaching the hands of kids everywhere before the real ones getting to the Chevy showrooms! I was a “space brat” (children of aerospace contractor employees at the Cape, Houston, White Sands, Edwards, etc). I remember many of the early astronauts drove Vettes....from Rathmann, I seem to recall.....and while stationed at the Cape and Patrick’s AFB, we would spot them driving the bright red and blue ones across the causeways at illegal speeds! That was 1967, 68 and 69.
That is awesome thanks for commenting.
Impressive restoration! It is so shiny!
Stonkingly great job!!..... The finished car reminds of looking a bottle of stonkingly good Chivas Regal 25 yr old whisky!!!.... Cheers!!
Just awesome indeed... Therapeutic, watching your videos.
Wow great restoration I shared on Facebook c3 corvette group
Damn - you just keep getting better. Funny how the more you do something, the more you improve at it. Great car, great restoration.
Beautiful restoration!! As the originals! Congrats! 👍🏻👍🏻
Very Cool looking and another awesome restoration Sir.
Incredible restauration, congratulations
My favorite corvette of all times. 😍
As I've said before, I don't think I'll ever actually restore Hot Wheels cars. I might, if I find some I really like in bad condition, but I don't really plan to. But, I still watch your videos, because It's interesting, and I would assume that the techniques you use could apply to small tools and other such items that I do have and plan to restore. Keep up the good work!
Came out looking great bud! Beautiful Red!
Another fantastic car. I really enjoy seeing your work.
...'these are the things that keep me up at night' Lol
Turned out gorgeous! Love the red.
The roughness of the zinc plating comes from the growth of zinc dendrites. Any microscopic imperfection will cause the current to focus there. The zinc will begin to build up to shorten the anode/cathode path at that point - pulling current away from the target area around it. You might notice the effect accelerates over time. Given time, these will grow into "trees" reaching out to the cathode. Eventually, they will cause a short. In industrial cells, they sometimes reverse polarity for a bit to get rid of them - they get deplated way faster than the areas surrounding them on the target (the "good" plating"). Not sure that would work for you or not. Good video.
Beautiful restoration! So entertaining
Today I stumbled upon my old 68 custom corvette that I thought I lost or destroyed. And now it’s being restored
Very successful restoration! Love the color, the reflections from light shining on it make it look soooooo good.
That Corvette looks awesome in red! I had a brown one back when they first came out, because I had a preference for brown cars back then. I don't know why, I was just an elementary school kid and I liked brown cars.
The brown ones can go for a lot of $$$ lol
Fantastic restoration looks great 👍
Nice work. Had one just like that when I was a kid. If you played with them a lot , they all bent down.
My little 6 year old boy loves watching you do these. He has requested you do a London bus ❤️ Please :)
I have several so I will add them to the list. Thanks!
@@baremetalHW That's amazing! Elliott will love it! Thank you ❤️
I love the red line tires up against the red paint! Look great bud
Great job on the carI like listening to you I like listening to you say how you're doing the job to me that's really pretty interesting hearing your voice and watching you go through the most I want some good videos
Looking amazing, thank you for sharing your story. God bless you and your family
When I got my first Hot Wheels car (the Corvette you just did) the axles were flat. I was told that the wheels would angle down over time and that, that was normal. I think it had something to do with contact with the track (or less contact with the track) and going faster. That is what I remember from 50 years ago.
Stunning restoration.
Awesome! The wheels bending down is very true, my Olds 442 has a front wheel bent down.
Outstanding work as always!
amazing work as always!
Awesome looking corvette ! A+
That red looks awesome!
