    Sidenote on the torch... It illuminates dark areas about 50% more than a lantern, but what's even cooler is that if you equip both, it combines their light, making even the darkest area super bright for a good draw. I know in most cases the lantern will suffice, but there are ambush moments and lurking enemies that pretty much count on you having the limited light source of the lantern, but with the added light of the torch you can spot them much easier. It's pretty cool that the light "stacks", and I feel the lighting effects is were the his game shines graphically.

    So off the bat the flail is meant for heavily armored enemies like stone imps or clayman they're good at clearing low level mines with wild slashes. You build stagger like crazy spear is good for whats for pushing a line and being able to keep your shield up while advancing. The torch can light the stone people with the pouches on their back. Early level they save your life

    • @ObsidianKnight90
      @ObsidianKnight90 Před 2 lety +57

      The flail is also really good for the Crystaliens if you're going with a Dexterity build as there are very few good Strike weapons that use Dexterity. I'm not saying you should upgrade it to +25 or anything but you should probably keep a Strike weapon in your inventory just in case you run into one of those.

  • @bellystraw
    @bellystraw Před 2 lety +203

    I'll defend the soldier's crossbow now. See, for many pure melee builds it's not really about sniping enemies but about luring out enemies so you're not dealing with a huge pack. And since the lock on distance in this game is pretty huge, having a crossbow in your off-hand is super handy. It's not a powerhouse by any means but it is the lightest crossbow and the requirements to use one are really low. 8 dex and 10 str means anyone can use this badboi in their offhand.
    It helped a lot during some places where I simply couldn't afford to take on a bunch of enemies so, I whip out old realiable, shoot one of the baddies and take them out one at a time.
    Don't sleep on the crossbows people!

    the crucial part of the "weapons" is the upgrade level and the AoW.
    the moveset is secondary next to weight/length/speed, coz as long as it's got a poke animation that you can use to roll catch, then it's fine..
    since R1 spam is mostly replaced with AoW spam, jump attacks, pokes, roll catch, and backstabs.

      Yeah... the flail WRECKS Crystellians. If you knock 1 down with a flail, they're done for unless there's more than 1. I used the Twin Maidens Puppets for the Triple Rot Crystellians and took then down 1 by 1 with my flail. If you can knock one down, you can do a fully charged attack in their animation to get back up, followed by 2 uncharged heavy attacks, and then they're down for a crit, and then you can keep them on a loop where they can't fight back.
      I'm so glad I decided to main a Flail in my first play through. I upgraded to a Nightrider's early and set it to scale with INT as I was going for a mage knight, but flails are just awesome if you know how to use one.

    The Thorn staff is for the blood/thorn magic that exists in the game, it's VERY useful for those two spells that does crazy damage. There's a few builds that use the thorn staff in the offhand and a glintstone staff in the main hand and you use the two for pretty substantial blood damage. It's niche, but definitely not useless.

    Since the staff of the guilty was brought up, I think one of the issues I've noticed with the game regarding staffs and seals is that the game actively pushes you away from using staffs and seals made for specific categories of incantations and sorceries. I've kind of noticed that a lot of spellcasters in this game use a generalized build spell wise for the sake of viability during a playthrough as some enemies or bosses need certain types of damage unless you wanna smash your head into a wall. Hand monsters needing fire, malenia needing bleed or frost, etc. While this isn't necessarily a bad thing, it definitely puts build that go down a specific route of spells at an objective disadvantage, thus destroying the viability of certain staffs or seals long term. I've been using the gravel stone seal for instance and using any type of incantation that isn't dragon cult does way less damage and almost isn't worth it, which is a problem when you run into bosses like malenia who are already hard even when you abuse certain status effects.

    The torch is seriously underrated here. It's not a main hand weapon, but in your off hand, it's a useful way of applying fire damage to enemies weak to it (slimes, for example), and honestly sometimes it's even preferable to the lantern, since unlike the worn lantern you can raise it to get more light.
