    Thanks for the video, you're interesting and keep it lively. I just got an A17 HM2, waited a year for the gun due to shortages. I also just got the Boyd's stock today, same one as you except in royal jacaranda. Glad you showed how to put it all together, thanks again. Beautiful stock BTW.

    Hey there...fellow Arizona A17 owner here. I got the version that comes with the fluted barrel and the Boyd's thumbhole stock pre-installed at the factory (in the "channel pepper" color). Got it on sale at Sportsman's Warehouse in Tucson just before Christmas. I was surprised to see you were able to remove the stock without removing the scope. I was not able to do that. Maybe my eyepiece is larger, maybe I need higher scope rings, maybe my allen wrenches are longer, or maybe my stock is slightly different for this fluted (very heavy) barrel model...I don't know. The stock is definitely made by Boyd's though; says it right on the butt pad. It definitely sucked to have to take that off. I had it zeroed so good I was putting three shot groups on bullseye in an area less than the size of a nickel at 100 yards. If getting a new scope is the answer, I'll do it! Currently using a Bushnell Banner Dusk & Dawn 4-16 x 40. Great scope for the money, but I'll swap it in a heartbeat to get around having to do that.

    Normally i don't buy rifles from Scheels but i was there getting a few odds and.ends when I say this exact Savage A17 stock and all for $327. Of course I bought it immediately. Love the stock that was the selling point, had to have it. It wss the only one they had and I got it. Other then my old mauser is the most beautiful stock i have ever had. Then to add to all of that the rifle is awesome. I wasn't sure if I would be happy with a .17hmr, for coyote hunting . Well i was impressed. First time.out after zeroing my ATN 4K pro, Bam one shot to the head head from 135y . By the end of the night i was 6 for 6. Great rifle.

    I did enjoy watching you video of swaping the stock up to the boyds stock. Would of liked to see how accurate the rifle shot before the swap verses after you put the boyds stock. I have a 22-250 savage that had the synthetic stock and i put the exact same stock from boyds and i can tell you the accuracy improved greatly. Great looking rifle.

    a gun shop in my area has the a17 with a really nice wood stock on it already. its a greyish color. as i go round and round trying to figure my next purchase out. that always comes to mind as a reminder to myself. "well that 17 hmr is ready to go".
    but i also really enjoy customizing stuff. the struggle is real.
    but i enjoyed the video. good job

    I ordered that new Spike Camp for a 17 HM2. Yep, customer service sucks. They would not ship to California although it is perfectly legal to do so. When it arrived, the area between the magazine and trigger was broken on one side. Completely split and waiting to fall off. Quality control: I guess that is shit, too. The first stock had a much nicer finish, the second one looked like a 10 year old kid finished it. And yes, the website that was "updated" 2-3 years ago is terrible. Too bad. They were once an awesome company, back in the day. I think no more Boyds stocks for me. They left a bad taste in my mouth with this last purchase. I also compared this new one to a 10 year old Marlin 795 stock: what a huge difference. The fit, finish and feel are much better on the Marlin. I guess that was before Savage and others picked them up for factory work. They must be too big to care about the little guy anymore.

    hi I got a Boyd thumbhole stock which was horribly finished. A lot of rough edges in and out and the stock didn't fit the barrel correctly, pushed on the barrel on the left side. They did offer to take it back and look at it, but I wasn't prepared to send back and wait 6 months. I love the look but was very disappointed with the finish quality and fit. Customer service was not prepared to do anything but assume I was being untruthful and there was no way it was that much out of spec that the barrel was rubbing. I ended up having to sand about an eighth of an inch of to get the barrel free-floating and lots of sanding where the router was forced too quickly in the wood. Magazine opening was also too small front to back by a sixteenth. 😕

  • @jeremykaleschenkoikov6993

    I bought a savage 93r 17hmr at the Yorkshire sportsman's warehouse on clearance for $275 stainless bolt action with accutrigger and came factory with a beautiful thumbhole stock like that. I wish that savage wouldn't use poly crap.

      Just curious...does the butt pad on your factory stock say "Boyd's"? I bought the A17 from a Sportsman's Warehouse in AZ that came from the factory with the thumbhole stock. Has the A17 and Savage Logo engraved in, but the butt pad says Boyd's. I'm wondering if Boyd's is making the stocks even for the savage rifles that come with the thumbhole stocks pre-installed.

    • @desertderpers2193
      @desertderpers2193  Před 7 lety

      It is a licensing deal that Boyd's has with Savage. Boyd's provides a select amount of stocks to Savage. It helps Boyd's get advertising and Savage gets to charge more for the rifle (or claim its a better deal).

    Always take gunsmithing advice from a man who lives in his mom’s basement, has Spider-Man posters on his wall, has a gaming pc, and uses the eight inch sunshade on his rimfire rifle scope.

      Hey man are you pent up er what? It was a stock swap. I wasn't floating a barrel or honing a feed ramp my guy. Just wanted to show a nice stock for the A17 back when there weren't many options. As far as the basement/gaming PC comment the only way I can address that is to say if you had an original thought in your head it would die of loneliness. I made that video back when I lived in southern AZ so the sun shade is a useful item when you are hunting in barren dessert. It's shitty people like you that keep others out of the firearm community.

    Desert Derpers, do you remember getting the measurements for your Savage A17? Boyd's says 7.444" from screw center to screw center. As you know the action screws enter one from the top one from the bottom so it is not like I can measure with the stock on. Did you measure the holes in the action or did you measure the holes in the stock?

    • @desertderpers2193
      @desertderpers2193  Před 7 lety

      I did not have to measure anything I just ordered the stock marked for my rifle and received a finished stock.

      Desert Derpers well hummm at the bottom of my order page it says
      "Barrel Dimensions: Point A = 0.92" and Point B = 0.69"
      Center to Center of Action Screws: 7.444"
      Over All Length of Part: 31.5"
      Comes with Boyds' 1/2" Rubber Recoil Pad.
      It is your responsibility to confirm the dimensions of your firearm with the supplied dimensions of our part."

    Mixed feelings on Boyd's. I bought the A17 that comes with a Boyd's stock from the factory. (Not a thumbhole) Beautiful. Not one complaint with that stock. I bought one of their At-Ones for my 1022 and I have to stop just short of saying it is a complete piece of crap, but it's so close that I would never buy another At-One. And I will tell anyone who will listen about all that is wrong with that stock.

    • @a.s.7386
      @a.s.7386 Před 4 lety

      @@theaspiration First off, that AT-ONE stock came with the wrong escutcheon installed. When I contacted Boyd's (and it took multiple tries before I actually talked to someone at Boyd's) they told me they would mail me the right part -- fix it yourself. The fit and finish on it are just horrendous. Everywhere plastic meets wood there are gaps, some as much as 3/16 inch, and the surfaces do not line up smoothly. The adjustment buttons are extremely stiff; there is absolutely no one-handed adjustment for either LOP or cheek riser. (And I disassembled, sanded, smoothed and lubricated. an improvement, but not much.) On the LOP, if you push the buttplate all the way in, the button stays depressed. Pull it out 1/8 inch to where the button pops into a secure position and you're left with a gap. Which do you want? A depressed button or a gap all the way around the butt plate? On the design side of it, I have found that I really dislike the sharp angles that are part of the design. They get uncomfortable after a while. All in all it's a nice looking stock -- If you're looking at it from across the room. I do like the idea of it, the adjustability of it, I'm just disappointed in the reality of it.
