Detailed video on how to replace the valvetronic motor gasket. I noticed a bunch oil, underneath and around the motor so it was time to get it done. These oil leaks can drop down to where the valve cover gasket is, and make it seem like you have a valve cover gasket leak.

I just want everyone to remember, before starting your car MAKE SURE YOU CALIBRATE THE MOTOR. Turn the car on without putting your foot on the brakes and let it do it’s thing for about 30 sec. Turn your car off and I would honestly do it a second time just to be safe. Then you should be good to go. Now you can start her up. Make sure to subscribe if this video helped you out!👍🏼👍🏼💥💥
I didnt do this after doing a valve cover gasket and when the car started, it was really rough idle and eventually died. Having hard time starting now. Assuming its related to his Valvetronic Motor? Could it be misaligned? and when you say turn on the car, you mean like KOEO? or actually start the car. Can i just pull it out and in an try these steps?
Yeah I would maybe pull it out and try recalibrating it!
TOMAHAWK813 ya cause now I can even get it to start. Calibrated it an nada. I’ll pull it out and retry it
@@shelbeycoulter5648 did this work
trey jackson no I just tried it and it didn’t work. Idk what to do now. Cranking over but not starting. Do I gotta clear some check engine codes?
I found lots off clips about the velvotronic seal relace and putting it in and what to do to make it calibrate... you did the best job explaining it from a tot z ... thanks bro !!! @@TOMAHAWK813 brother quick question when i put the valtronic back in... i turn the allen key til it pulls itself in flush then bolt er back up?
@@TOMAHAWK813 MA MAAAAN!
I forgot to do the tension in the beginning so it popped out, but when I reinstalled it I did the Allen key thing and now I just get an exclamation mark...I hear the valvetronic clicking when I open the switch so then I start engine and Its shaky now....what should I do? Remove it again?
I would just reinstall it. Before you start the car press the start button without putting your foot on the brake so it’ll calibrate the motor
And yes turn the Allen key till it pulls itself flush👍🏼
Good job!!! It helped me a lot, my engine has the same leak, I will solve it thanks to your video! Thanks!
can you translate to English please
Thank you for uploading the tutorial. I just replaced the Valvetronic motor gasket on Sunday. Every step is explained and east to follow.
My original gasket was leaking with 230k. Kms , so it was on the list to do. Bought a OEM gasket by elring Germany for $27 and learned something too.
It is worth it.
My bmw is 2008. 528xi N52. Thank you
The VCG is still good. No leaks . Thanks again
Glad you got it fixed!
Hi..Finally got it started.I had tapped the vc a bit when I did the gasket..I guess I damaged something..I went ahead and got a new vc...Damn thing started right up.Thanks alot for you advise.Cheers,PGM
No problem!
Lmao, all good. Nice video. I just did the starter & valve cover on my wife’s n52 06 325i. The aluminum valve cover. I went through 7 eccentric seals trying to get them in. What a nightmare wrenching on this car is
Thanks for the reply so far so good I'll see tomorrow if there is any further issues but I think I am good. Also a short cut if needed. When I did it the second time I was able to do it without removing the cabin filter, the brace under the cabin filter and leaving the ground wire. I was able to squeeze by and just focus on the valvetronic motor but still great video. If you even have any bids of how to read inpa that would be great
Idk what happened to my comments
Great DIY
I bought a 07 328i with 130,000 miles with oil around the oil cap didn't think much of it. Bout three thousand miles down the road I started noticing smoke from the passenger side. So I started looking into it the oil cap gasket and the actuator seal were both leaking all over the side and filling up on the empty holes around the engine. When I made a hard left the oil would splash off and hit the hot exhaust pipe. Iam just glad I dont have to replace a headgasket yet.
Yeah that’s pretty common. Even if you had to do the valve cover gasket, it’s not a hard job.
@@TOMAHAWK813 this is my 1st bmw I didn't know to much bout them at first but now I've replaced water pump, thermostat, seals, head gasket, both soiloids before anything went out.
Best tip on e90s is wrap the exhaust pipes underneath motor with heat wraps

Which way do we turn the Allen for installation? actuator makes like two tick noises like it’s activated when I turn on and off. afraid to fully run it is that normal?
I don't understand, FCP euro says to turn clockwise till tension when removing the valvetronic motor and after installing it, turn counter-clockwise and you say the other way around in the video?
I need the same information
When you put this part i need to turn pn after finish that work? Or a need to going to somewhere for program the computee?????? Pls help.
Hello
Did you use relearn method With ignition or bmw tool
What do think about some guys who turn allen key counterclockwise immediately while removing gently bolts
Apparently it works too.
but probably this method allows to use ignition method when your method need relearn with bmw tool
There is no E8 torx bolt on the bottom bracket on my 2006 330xi. It looks like a pin instead and I am stuck! The bracket itself has two security torx that are inaccessible!
Whats the torq spec on that middle bolt you used an allen wrench on to loosen? Ive replaced my VCG and my Eccentric Shaft Sensor and Seal along with the Valvetronic Gasket, I have a rough idle on start up even after doing the "key 2nd position 10 gas pedal pump" process. The only thing I can think of is the Valvetronic center bolt was loosen to much and torqed to much or little. Got any info on that?
Tracy A I just turned it until it was flush with the valve cover. I don’t think there’s a specific spec to it. But I’m not 100% sure.
Yeah when your engine first turns on it’ll be a little bumpy. If that doesn’t go away I’d check your coil pack connections and make sure their really tight. If it’s not fully connected it’ll cause a rough idle while I experienced.
Nice information

Great Video thanks. On my E90 4cyl 2007 I have an Engine light come up and after a scan it has code 2A67 Valve lift control faulty. Do you know if this means I only need to replace this motor you remove and reinstall. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Thank you! But i dont know much about the 4 cyl models unfortunately. But if you do have a valvtronic motor and your getting a code for it then yes this would be the item to change.
Great video thank you so much. Question after installing the valve tronic motor do you need to Turn key to ON position for 30 seconds, then OFF, then ON again for 30 seconds before starting vehicle to set the valvetronic motor?
Thank you and yes I would do that to recalibrate the motor. Don’t be afraid to subscribe 🤘🏼
I need HELLLP!! 10:47
Hi, When I spun the allen key at the back of the valvetronic motor until the tension stop and its flush to the mount, the bottom fastener won't align itself with the hole to put back the E8 bolt.
If its flush with the mount and the e8 at the bottom doesn't match up then im not really sure what happened. It should line up because it doesn't make sense that it doesn't if there motor is flush. Maybe it looks flush but you need to spin the Allen key some more. I would take it apart and try again.
Hey please help me ......how did you recalibrate valvetronic by just feeling the tension in between??......please let me know because I’m lost on this 2008 128i
Sean Mais I explain how to recalibrate in my pinned comment :)
the allen key turn clockwise when install in. I did calibration as it, but my car 2006 325i RPM is rough not smooth. I test drive for 10 miles, the car run is ok, but when I stop at red light my car engine turn off . (3 times). is it something else I should do?
An Nguyen check all your coil pack connections. If one is just slightly loose, it’ll mess everything up.
Hey question I had pryed off the valvetronic motor this was before I watched your video I heard a pop am guessing from the tension am not sure if that's ok to do or do you have to loosen it with the allen key thanks in advance nice video btw
@@TOMAHAWK813 love the quick reply ! Hopefully everything turns out fine thanks !
It should be fine. Just make sure to calibrate it:)
Nice work but you never encountered problems like that E8 you loosened at 3:37, what do you do if its stripped? should i just throw the whole car away lol the reason im asking is its in a very tight spot and no way of getting extractor tool to it, so how do you remove that rascal?
Try to use the exact tools I did with the swivel and see what happens. I agree it’s a hard area but you’re going to have to figure it out lol
Hi just let you know problem was totally different and ,i taken it to Bmw specialist who sorted it out lol 4 days which I was happy to leave it there for longer also
Good:)
11:00minutes in: This part is critical right? When you removed it you used 4mm to go ANTI-clockwise so it popped out right? when installing you leave the motor as it was the whined it in so it pulls itself back into the gasket so the bolts go in easy ......is this correct?
Yeah, it’ll pull itself back into place when you screw it in with the Allen wrench. It’s just locking into the teeth. Then you can tighten the 2 screws on the side.
We’re you getting oil pooling around the top of the valve cover? Possible leaking onto the exhaust?
Yes
Nice video man, detailed! I just did mine now and some reason it makes a squealing sound when I start it. It make that sound before I put it in when screwing the work gear from back. I hope it has to break in and go away. Or I bought junk
Yeah i don’t know what a squealing noise would be. It’s coming from the valvetronic motor?
When I first installed it it would make a squeak sound when I first start the car but now it went away. Was seeing if it was a common issue or something.
@@adamb50 did the noise issue resolve, pls share what caused it , bad valvotronic motor .or something else thanks
@@mohammadhayatca3244 yes the noise did go away, I didn’t have to do anything to fix it, I guess it had to just wear in.

PG M I have the exact same problem. Did you find out what was stopping it from starting?
Could of been a loose ground. Go back and check that everything is tight. Also be fore starting the car I would put the car in accessory mode by pressing the start button without your foot in the brake and letting the Valvetronic motor adjust and do its thing.
Hi! I found your video very helpful, just one question, the valvetronic need to be initialized with the scanner or something? Or is enough just replacing the valvetronic motor? Thanks¡
+Víctor Hugo Martínez Check out the pinned post on top from me and it’ll explain how to learn it back in:) Very easy.
One question, do you use silicone or sealant on valve cover replacement gasket ? I know one thing, If you don’t use it the gasket will start leaking few months later and you be back at Bmw burnt oil smell club .
No I didnt use a sealant.
Good how to
Hi. Mine is leaking. My GF got her valve cover gasket replaced before we started dating about 5 years ago. Now the valvetronic gasket leaks (i guess they didn't change it when changing the valve cover gasket). Is it worth it changing it or should I wait until the valve cover gasket goes bad again (they often fail in the E90s)?
The e90 is losing and burning aboyt 2quarts engine oil a year. Also, I guess it has lots of build up in the cylinders becuause it idles rough if I put 91 in it but runs super smooth on 93.
Try replacing the valvetronic motor gasket first. It’s a pretty easy and straightforward job. The oil burning is very normal. I would always run 93.
hello ! What should I take into account when replacing the valvetronic?
Don't over complicate it. Easy fix, just follow the video:)
What if u accidental try to start it before u calibrate the valve tronic motor whst do u do
+John Cottle I mean you really shouldn’t but if you did that I would turn it off real quick and at least try to calibrate it. If it’s already been running and you have no issues then it should be fine.
By calibration do you mean time it tdc???
I see there’s a aluminum back plate behind where the gasket goes. My 09 328i Doesn’t have that, it’s just a big opening. And I’ve replaced that gasket twice it seems like the bottom of the gasket keeps getting torn I don’t know why? Would you know? Bought one from autozone failed. Bought one from fcp euro failed. Now I’m going to try ecs tuning. I don’t remember that aluminum back piece on my oem valve cover either. I currently bought a valve cover from Amazon and it’s exactly the same and holding up just fine.
Yeah im not sure why you don't have the aluminum thing
What aluminum back plate are you referring to? Can you post a pic? I have an 08 328i
Did you have to get the car to relearn the timing? Loads of people telling me i'll need to get this done?
There’s no timing you have to deal with. Just calibrate the motor as I mentioned in the pinned comment :)
@@TOMAHAWK813 ok thanks a bunch I'll give it a go
No problem!
What I done was reinstalled the valve tronic motor it didn’t actually crank and run I meant to recalibrate it but I accidentally put my foot on brake it tried to crank so whst should I do
+John Cottle So the car won’t start at all? Check all the grounds and make sure their tight.
Thankyou I’ll check In morning it was running before I done this if that’s not it what else should I do

My gasket is leaking bad...
demskies maybe you didn’t torque it down good enough which caused it to leak?
hi, could you tell me which code you had before replace the gasket?
Joseph Alexandre no codes. Just noticed the leak.
TOMAHAWK813 today i scanned my Bmw and i have 2A43 valvetronic thermal overload protection: warning threshold, do you what si it?
Joseph Alexandre you might just need a new valvetronic motor. I would start with that.
Ok thank you bro. 👍
Joseph Alexandre no problem. Just make sure to change the gasket as well.
The key part is reinstalling the valvetronic. Don’t force it in, but turn the 4mm Allen key clock wise till it easily goes back in its place. Then tighten the E10 blots.
One guy said that this motor doesn't need to be recalibrated in 2007 and after models, but prior to that, (and mine is E90 2005, 330i) it has to be recalibrated.
Do you know anything about this?
+Jack Trade I personally wouldn’t chance it and would just calibrate it lol
Recalibrate anyways. It used to be a scan tool was needed, but now you just have to do the on 30 seconds off procedure. If you crank the 4mm key all the way in first, then out as the motor comes out, then in as you put it in, technically nothing has moved out of calibration, but people aren't always that exact.
@@aurelioramos8463 ok..
The thing is, I've got no software to recalibrate it with.
What do you guys use?
Go to the pinned post lol. You don’t need a scan tool.
@@TOMAHAWK813 my apologies.
I wasn't clear enough in my post.
BMW Doctor says I need to use a laptop to recalibrate my motor, where as 2007 and models after, you can recalibrate motor just by pressing a start button for at least 10 sec, but not starting a car.
This guy was specific saying I need a scan tool or laptop to learn limits on mine, because method used to recalibrate that motor only applies to cars made in 2007 and after, but mine, which is 2005, E90, he's adamant I need a laptop. Otherwise, I'm not gonna be able to drive the car after I reinstall the motor back in.
5/32 Allen clock wise till u feal tension than wile removing e8 slowly

I'm not sure if it was some type of glitch but I took out the motor put it back in same exact thing as last time and not the car is running fine so maybe something just glitches up incase anyone else runs in to this issue
I do not have a clue on what you did there:(
One use the allen more and just spin it faster get ur hands in the right spot just spin more than u think u need to. Two do not get the oil out with compressed air ever notice the oil splatter on everything including his electrical connectors after spraying it. use a paper towel but preferred use a microfibre cloth as it doesnt leave residue. And blot and wipe the oil out by hand. i roll the paper towels into like a big candle wick and stick this in and dab it so it soaks into the paper and let it sit
compressed air works fine
Chicky chicky bang bang

TOMAHAWK813 hey 👋 my MPG is dropping but the car is fine is this good?
if you disconnected the battery and reconnected it then that could be the issue. Your average mpg read out gets reset and it becomes more sensitive if that makes sense. Just go take a drive on the highway for a bit and it’ll go back up;)

@@TOMAHAWK813 Ok. It just took me a minute to try to understand what you were saying. Good video
I just dont get why go through all that removing when its right there just 1:unplug the negative battery terminal 2:unplug the coil 3: looseing the 3 screws that holds the valvetonic to the motor cover (start with the bottom screws )
Just gives you more room when you remove it all
Nice camera shake....fail
T B lol ok?
You put the gescket upside down
No way. Screw holes wouldn’t align if it was upside down.
