Heey Everybody. I am about to show you how to replace the valvetronic motor and it’s gasket on any BMW N52 engine. The principle and the steps are the very same, you just may have it in a different chassis. So first and foremost remove the negative cable from your battery. Now I am going to do the job on a BMW z4. If you will be working on a different chassis make sure you remove all the necessities before you start. I mean the beauty cover, the cowl, and any other parts or plastic that may be in the way. So remove the number 3 and number 4 coil packs with the help of a screwdriver or with something similar as shown in the video. Grab a size 8 E torx socket and an extension and your quarter inch ratchet and remove the bolt sitting below the valvetronic motor. You will have to use the quarter inch ratchet and the socket for it, because you won’t be able to fit anything else in there. Pull off the connector of the valvetronic motor. You will see a hole for a size 4 Allen key or bit at the end of the valvetronic motor. Put one inside it and start turning it clockwise till you start to feel a resistance, then stop. Use the size 8 E torx socket again and remove the 2 upper bolts holding the valvetronic motor in it’s place. Then again put the size 4 Allen bit to the end of it, but now start to turn it counter clockwise and it will slowly release the valvetronic motor. Lastly let’s remove the gasket. You will need a T35 torx bit in order to do so. There are 2 bolts as you can see.
Well, now you are 50% done with the job. Let’s put everything back together. Use the new gasket and secure it with the 2 T35 torx bolts to it’s place. Now comes the valvetronic motor.
Put it back, and use the size 4 Allen bit again at the and of it. Turn it clockwise to pull the valvetronic motor into it’s place. If it sits properly, tighten the 2 upper bolts with a size 8 E torx socket. Now tighten the lower bolt with the size 8 E torx socket again. Lastly but not least, put back the coil packs back to their place.
And as mentioned a very important step at the end of the video. Before you start up the car you will need to do the adaptation of the valvetronic motor. It resets the starting and the ending position of it. Some people may say that you can do it without a diagnostic tool. All you have to do is to cycle the ignition 2-3x times. You will have to hear the valvetronic motor moving.
I did it with my Autel MK908 diagnostic tool. If you need any help with that I can guide you through it, just let me know in the comments. Hope I could help with this video and you can tackle the job yourself without paying someone a huge amount of money.

To do the reset without the scan tool would I need to simply let the engine run for a few minutes or do I just start the ignition 2-3 times?

I forgot to remove the motor buttom screw and when trying to back it out I heard 2 snaps. After removing the bottom screw and removing the motor I notice chips of the metal inside. I think I got all of the 2-3 pieces. It looks like they came from the gear inside. Will it still work after I replace it? Thank you!

Great video. Thanks! I plan on doing this soon on my 2009 128i, E88 N51. I don't believe my scan tool (Xtool D8) has the option to do the Valvetronic Motor Relearn or adaptation. You mention the alternative of cycling the ignition 2-3x times. Do you have any more thoughts on this method since you made the video?

I think your scan tool should be able to do the reset procedure. ;)

Thanks for your reply! Working with Xtool tech support, they showed me the scanner can indeed do "Limit Position Learning of Electronic Valve Controls Systems". Thanks!

Hi, great video! I just did this procedure but the bottom bracket bolt for the motor will not align, please could you advise why this may be?

There is no E8 torx bolt on my bottom bracket on my 2006 330xi. It looks like a pin instead and I am stuck! The bracket itself has two security torx that are inaccessible!

@samaid16 sorry for the late response bro been doing alot of work on my other car . I got back on the bmw today and it seems like the timing was off smh 🤦 . Good news is i found a good video that explained how to time the n52 ,got the retiming kit for 96 bucks and a new valve cover ( figured i might as well replace mine) . Got the engine to TDC and waiting until tomorrow afternoon to finish timing and installing the new valve cover . So we’ll see how it goes . If you are experiencing the same issue as me i would go through and check codes if you can . Get back to me and tell me what you find !
