We CRASHED Our Narrowboat In A Turbulent Lock! - Ep. 83

- Don't crash your narrowboat into canal locks - here's why!
If you crash your narrowboat into canal locks it pretty much destroys your blacking paintwork!
Heading off on our journey across Britain by Narrowboat, we set off from Nantwich on the Shropshire Union Canal and stop off at Hack Green to visit the secret nuclear bunker, so secret in fact that they won't let us in (it was closed) 😂 (Watch out for fuel boat Halsall!)
We carry on to Audlem where the by-washes between the lock pounds are pretty fierce. So fierce that they smash narrowboat Silver Fox into the sides of the lock entrances, damaging the paintwork and making Shaun swear!
After a few days in Audlem, we move on, through the Adderley Locks and towards Market Drayton where it's third time lucky after mooring one was dog poo city and mooring two was generator city! We finally find somewhere quiet, just after Talbot Wharf and the aqueduct where we moor up for a few days. Living on a narrowboat in winter is so cozy!

Even with the occasional ding here and there, Silver Fox is still one the coolest looking boats on the cut. :)
Happy new year, guys!
Thank you! Shaun had her sanded and repainted within an hour 😂
i wish the world could be filled with nice genuine people like you both, your channel is a great escape
Aww, thank you! xx
I am astounded by the creativity you guys show every week. Beautifully filmed, edited, crafted, cinema grade videos every damn time. All I can do is stand up and yell bravo but my neighbors would probably think me rather wonky. ;)
No! Do it! DO IT! 😂
@@FoxesAfloat LMAO!!!
Always a laugh, but sinking the boat with the generator
meant me cleaning the coffee I had in my mouth off my computer. Good one guys!
If anybody asks, it wasn't us 🤫
Lol
@@FoxesAfloat We ain't seen you, right?
Mr Genrator. 'So I sunk his boat'
Nearly spat my tea out lol
😂😂😂
🤣😂🤣😂
That would learn em.
" So we sank his boat." My tea just went out my nose.
if anybody asks, it wasn't us! Sssshhhh! 🤫
@@FoxesAfloat I was listening with headphones on & guffawed out loud at that comment - then had to explain to the rest of the family why I'd made so much noise !! 😎😨
Loving the cheeky history lessons!! I know that filming & editing are not easy so I just want to say that your effort is SO appreciated!!! Foxes Afloat & a good bottle of wine makes a perfect Friday evening here in Savannah Georgia.
Nice one. Thank you so much! Hope the wine was as good 👍🏻😛
You both (and Dillon) are just WONDERFUL. Since I found you I have stopped watching television and just watch you. Your music has gotten really delightful and everything you film is outstanding. Love your historical input also. Keep up the great work.
Thank you so much, Barbara! 💜
Loved the Mrs. Slocombe reference as well as the mention of Inspector Blakey @ classic!!! 🙂
Haha! Glad you got them 👍🏻😂
Totally agree, never to cold for ice cream. It just melts slower when it's cold.
Haha! You got that right!
You're right, Colin. It's never too cold for a good ice cream.
Well, maybe when the polar bears starts to shiver but then you could use your ice cream to heat up.
Haha!
Happy New Year Colin, Shaun and Dillon. The Doggie coat is a great idea, no more shivering and Dillon gets to be with his Daddies. I was wondering about all that water bypassing some of the locks and its affect on the boat. Now I know! I few scuffs and bruises are to be expected going into those "just made to fit locks". I think that all in all Shaun does a great job piloting the Fox.
Keep trucking guys....until next Friday over and out!
Thank you! Ah, it's all good. The scratches were sanded, treated and painted the same day 😂
Great vlog...authentic, comforting and full of genuine personality...thank you👍🏻👌🏻
Thanks, Kevin!
Linda from Minnesota here.......woke up to another great vlog! Always a lovely way to start the day. I think I've become obsessed with narrowboating. I just ordered a years subscription to Waterways World! Airmail too! At 72, I am still dreaming. Thanks again Guys! You make my day!
Hey, Linda! 👋
Nothing wrong with dreaming! You never know, you might end up on a narrowboat one day 👍🏻 xx
So glad you three hardly ever use the fast forward thing. Love watching the world flow by at a nice easy pace. You do great videos.
Thanks so much! I try to only use time-lapse if it offers something positive to the episode 👍🏻💜
I as going to suggest a wooly jumper for Dylan. But I see he got a jacket. Probably a better choice. More wind proof. Thank for another vlog.
Yeah, he loves it too! 💜
Yet another brilliant episode!: great music, flaming scenes, bubbling wears, an oops-as-la, and the Scottish hammer toss! Happy New Year.
Haha! Scottish Hammer Toss 😂 He wouldn't win much with that 3ft effort 😂
@@FoxesAfloat sorry for calling Dillon, Dylan. The latter is is due to Dylan being the name of one of my Daughter's former hairy boyfriend😜
@@islamentable1290 Ah, it's fine. Most people call him Dylan 😂
@@FoxesAfloat why am I thinking "Magic Roundabout?" 🤔😊

The silver fox is the best looking one traveling the locks
Thank you so much!
Oh . .. what a wonderful way to begin my weekend just enjoying the peace and tranquility of your English countryside. By the way . . . Shaun looks rather fetching in his green jacket and muffler ;) and rather fittingly, matching Dylan's Italian Cut jacket ;) Great music choices in this one and who doesn't love seeing a Cold War Bunker! I truly enjoyed visiting the Titan Missile Museum here in Arizona and yes . . . I did get to push the Launch Button! Have I mentioned lately just how hysterical Shaun is, the veritable Sidekick if there ever was one! Colin, your editing, narration and drone skills are unparalleled, we all truly benefit from your research and production skills. The World is definitely a better place with you two in it. Thanks again for making my Friday morning a good one and have a most Happy New Year.
Oh, Michael. You almost brought a tear to my eye! You always say the nicest things. I love sitting here and replying to the comments as they come in over the first few hours. I don't know what I can add. You're right about Shaun, I'm not sure about me 😂 Have a lovely weekend! 💜
Excellent as always chaps. Hope Shaun managed to repair the 'Fox's' scrape! Dylan looks a treat in his new jacket. Thanks again.
Ah, it's all good. The scratches were sanded, treated and painted the same day 😂
when you had narrowboat silver fox built you spent a lot of time on the design, now you have been living aboard for a while is there anything you would do differently? love your content.
Thanks, Tom. The only thing would have been an additional 12V socket by the dinette. Apart from that, she's perfect! x
I agree, never too cold for ice cream. So glad I can go back and watch all your vlogs from beginning. Safe travels
Mmmmm love ice cream x
Aww, Dillon is such a sweetheart, willing to shiver to hang with his pack. Seriously though, his pack are the wiser ones for protecting him from hypothermia. Listen to your pack, Dillon.
Haha! He does 😂
You two were Dillon's "pack". Any dog feels anxiety at being separated from his/her pack, even it is just a door and the weather outside sucks.
💜
Yeah! It’s Friday and time for another episode of “The Adventures of Shaun and Colin with Dillon the Wonderdog!”
Love your posts!
Thanks, Jay! 👍🏻
Your videos are truly a highlight of mine each Friday. Thank you for sharing your journey with us!
It's our pleasure! Glad you enjoy them 👍🏻
Happiest of New Years to you too! Another very enjoyable installment of your journey with the usual incredible footage and music to set the mood, and supported with just the right amount of history and local information.
Cheers, Anton! Happy New Year to you too 👍🏻💜
Not long after the Secret Bunker opened, my wife and me seen the signs for it, and decided to go back another day! 2 weeks later we got on the motorbike and headed towards it (about 50mins from where we live - sticking to the speed limits of course...😎)
Following the signs all the way - then nothing! We back tracked to see if we missed any, but to no avail! Think they hadn't put up the last signs then - so it will always be the 'Secret Bunker' for us....
Never been back to look for it since, untill you have now reminded us of it, after a few laughs, so will go and try again! Brilliant vlog as always - thankyou!!
Haha! Brilliant! I hope it’s open when you go 😂
Just love that section of the Shropshire Union. Takes me back. Live in the USA in Williamsburg VA now and just love your programme.
Aww, thank you, Andrew! Happy New Year! 💜
Happy New Year from your most ardent fan in upstate New York, USA. I discovered your channel quite by accident and have binge watched ever since. Went back to before Silver Fox was built and now need to slow down so as to not have only one vlog a week. Your videography, drone work, content and presentation along with the humor is amazing! You have shown me a view of the UK, a lifestyle and means of travel I never knew existed. Even expanded my vocabulary... a winding hole? Legging a boat? Who knew? Much of what you present is more of a docu-vlog, with the history behind places etc. Truly fascinating. I love it all. I have joyfully subscribed and will await each new installment. I saved yesterday's vlog (and it was tough) so I could savor it with coffee this morning. May have to begin a fan club. Thank you so much Collin and Shaun. A scratch on the head to Dillon. K
A Foxy Fan Club.... Got a ring to it 😉
Haha! So you're a binge-watcher. A special breed of viewer we love!
So, winding hole and leggings interest you? I might be legging a boat soon 😉
See you next week! 👋 x
I really enjoy watching and listening to you give such interesting information about the little towns, or about the interesting things you pass on the trip. Other videos show scenery but you explain what it is we are seeing. Well done and keep up the great work. Your making it so others like me will come and rent a boat to see things for ourselves.
Thanks, Stacey! You'd love it 👍🏻
Fun Phil & kitties sighting :) Now that that "secret" nuclear bunker is open for tours it makes you wonder where the new real bunker is.
Yeah...? 🤔
I’ve been having a tough time with burnout over the holiday season. I wanted you to know that watching your videos has made a big difference. It’s been helping me rest and been keeping me laughing. I am so enjoying watching your adventures. Thanks you so much!
Hope you get well soon!
Awww... I hope you’re feeling more energetic soon, Christine 👍🏻💜
My Saturday morning coffee and tune into your adventures makes my week. In Australia in middle lockdown so sad . Nearly two years .
That is awesome!
“It’s never too cold for ice-cream.”

Amazing. This one exudes comfort. Timing, content, editing, music.. all seamless.
Aww, thank you, Douglas! Glad you appreciated it 👍🏻
You two +1 are the most refreshing things on the internet!! Much needed by me while my State is burning 🥵 down. California and Oregon have no more air, so I’m breathing yours! Much love and admiration from the USA!
If I could send fresh air I would 💜
Your content is my fresh air!
I cannot swim, hate water and know nothing about boats - but you guys make it all seem rather tempting...
We don't swim in there really 😉
I would love to go 'boating' and found I can actually do so, with you two. :))
Welcome to join us every week!
Beautiful photograpy, giggles and a stunning dog, thank you all for sharing your video with us, Take care
Thanks, Christine! 👍🏻💜
Bumper boats... been there done that lol!! Like I’ve always said, you aren’t a sailor until you’ve left some paint on the dock. I am really impressed with your helmsman skills in general though.
Thanks!
Rewatching old vlogs. Always good.
Nice one! 👍🏻
Without a doubt the very best boaters vlog around. Not surprising when there are two professionals involved. You guys always stick to your subject and don't wander off track (like broadcast TV does) You could give courses on program production . 15 out of 10 and 2. Gold stars each.
Peter, that's the nicest comment I've read so far, thank you so much! I don't appreciate what we produce as much as others do, so it's always nice, and surprising, to read comments like yours. Thank you so much, you've made my day 😊
Shivering Dillon deserves a Pea Coat to stand his watches in. Come on guys, outfit your crew. (wrote that before you showed us his new jacket at 22:30 - great job!)
🙄 Watch the vlog first 😂
It may be winter but still beautiful scenery, and I don't mean just you two, lol.
Yes you do 😏
Yes, he does! Hahah
The Nuclear Bunker is well worth visiting. Very interesting but also dark & chilling in many ways. There's a cafe too!
I was quite disappointed that it was closed for the whole of December. Must be a very quiet time of year for them. I was always fascinated, and scared, as a young'un about nuclear war. Oh well, next time 👍🏻
Foxes Afloat As a child I had nightmares after watching the 'Protect & Survive' public information film that used to be on tv in the 70's. I genuinely believed a nuclear attack was a certainty, not a possibility.
First outing of a New Year, beautiful scenery and laughs. Thanks guys.
Our pleasure, Julia! Thank you! Happy New Year! 💜
Lol "are you being served" yes I am😂 with two lovey Gentlemen sharing this with us sending love and hugs to both of you and Dylan❤️😁xxxxx

Hi Colin and Shaun, just love your videos, they are so amazing to watch, the scenery is beautiful, like the aerial views,of the surrounding area that you are cruising, carry on narrowboating guys
Thanks 👍
We live in an end terrace house, but I think the building contractors were Scottish considering how much money they tried to save on construction because I agree with Colin about the noise passing through.
I could never live in a terraced house again 🙉
Another very nice trip! Thanks. Hope the weather allows you to travel and stop where you wish. It is very informative to see your lovely countryside. Bless you all.
Thank you! We've had a couple of weeks of nice weather, although back to wind and rain from tomorrow ☔️
So glad I’m watching your blogs again. I must have been preparing dinner last time and missed a lot of what was happening. Dillion’s coat is great and means he can spend time on deck even when cold. Love seeing your blogs and learning more about our history. 💕

Just found you 2. Love, love your videos. Sean (sorry not sure how you spell name)got the ice cream correct, mint chocolate chip, yum. You killed me with the comment on the generator "sunk their boat" LMFAO. Know the generator dislike, I boondock in the California desert in the winter, have solar, and thank God there is so much room between campers that most of the time can't hear when others run their generators. Keep up the great videos Boys! Much love from Montana USA.
Welcome! Yeah, I'd love to drown a few generators! 🤣
Colin/Shaun - might be my first comment, I stumbled across a vlog a while ago but decided to watch all of them in order - I've got to here! Really enjoying following the adventure. Thought I'd comment on this one as Audlem is pretty much my home village and I've spent a lot of time walking on the towpath there - it's a bit weird seeing you in places I know well! I'll carry on catching up now, cheers, Matt.
Cheers, Matt. Glad you're enjoying our channel xx
Love all the history of your country! love the videos...thanks..blessings from a Canadian in Panama 🇵🇦

Love those crisp, early morning scenes where the air is cold and clear and the canal is like a mill pond. Despite the cold, you know the inside of your boat is lovely and warm. Just 'perfic'.
Another thoroughly entertaining video. Thanks once again. :-) PS. I've ordered a calendar. With the current situation, it might well be 2022 before I see it though. LOL
hehe. Thanks, Rob. We start shipping them on the 14th so hopefully everyone will have theirs by the end of the month 👍🏻
I keep going to bed at gone midnight after binge watching you two, and the wife is not buying the fact I am watching two chaps on their canal adventures on CZcams. Anyways, keep it up. If you are ever back in Manc I will try and bring you a coffee from the excellent Manco Co coffee house (just off castlefield basin)
Ooooh, thank you! x
Great photography!
Thank you so much 😀
Another great vlog gentlemen and always a good choice of music for Canal boating

You keep finding some of our favourite moorings! Local advice, after we had bounced through those Shroppie bywashes, was to crack open the top gate paddle before entering the lock. This straightens the flow and gives you a chance of getting into the lock without hitting the side.
Still a fantastic vblog.

We hired a boat on t'Shroppie in September. I had the job of steering into all the locks. I was marked out of ten for bump-free entries ; didn't get any tens thanks to those bloody bywashes😕!
Had a laugh when someone who told us how it should be done tried to hold his boat with a rope at Tyrley bottom lock and ended up on his a**e!
😂😂😂😂
Great one again!
When I was a kid, my father used to be captain on a river barge, sailing the canals and rivers of Western Europe. A bit larger, like 100 meters long, 10 meters wide, 2500 metric tons of (liquid, mostly chemical) cargo. I loved helping out in the summer. When we were entering a lock, especially the tight ones, I was always out with a wooden fender, to protect whenever we hit the wall, by simply making sure the wooden beam with a rope would be in between the wall the he ship hull. And to make the fender last, always making sure it was soaking... mmm that sounded odd, LOL.
The final couple of meters, certainly when you needed to go way up to the end of the lock, where always under control of the "rope man" at the bow. With a cable you would loop over the lock bollard and then the ship's bollard, 3 turns (always clockwise) and then being able to stop the ship only with a firm grip on the cable, that was a stressfull moment and powerful feeling, certainly for a 16 year old boy! Anyway, I digress...
The point was, do you ever consider using a fender when entering one of those tiny locks? Especially the ones here with the brutal side inflow of water.
Cheers, off cathing up on your great channel...
Amazing story! e don't use any kind of side fenders in the locks as they can catch on the lock wall and sink your boat!
Another wonderful video and great humor as always, thank you guys.
Thanks, Danni! 👍🏻

Really?
I see you have a spare wheel on top of your boat. Is that in case you decide to take a short cut (get the pun) by road and have a puncture?
Haha! Good idea. Its for when we need a spacer from the towpath 👍🏻
@@FoxesAfloat Why would that be?
