88. Canal Capital of the World! Birmingham by Narrowboat on the BCN Old Main Line

  • It's the undisputed canal capital of the world! We're heading into Birmingham by narrowboat on the BCN old main line.
We leave Dudley and head down James Brindley's winding old main line of the Birmingham Canal, passing plenty of historic architecture, the Soho, Icknield, and Ozzells Street loops, and signs of Birmingham's industrial past before we arrive right in the centre of Birmingham near the Arena.
Birmingham is the canal capital of the world, with 160 miles of canals at its height. Even though 60 miles have since gone, Colin explores some of the 100 miles of canal this historic city still has to offer, and our planned 'couple of days' in Birmingham turns into a two-week stay. Colin's sad to leave!

Boys I absolute love your videos me and my 3 year old son sit and watch these videos every Friday now the other week we went down to Wheaton Aston marina and my boy got so excited because he thought he could see silver fox sadly it wasn't you guys but I let him believe it was he couldn't wait to get home and sit and watch 3 hours of videos ... Then the video came up of you guys in Wheaton Aston he never shut up saying .... See daddy it was it was Dillon's boat . Keep up the great videos and I'm very impressed with Shaun's steering of the boat he's a master at that oh and the knowledge that Colin gives out about the canals will give the younger and older generations great insight of how canals was the motorways off the past

I'm Brumie born and bred. Thank you for not bashing the heck out of it like many others feel the need to. It's changed so much over the last 60 years (as in the 60 before that) and although I've moved away now, seeing it discussed in such a positive light warms my heart. I'm very grateful to you both.

I know you love your facts!; so the scaffolding under the M5 repair was the largest single scaffolding structure ever constructed in Europe. To give some context to the size of the project; there were 500,000 scaffold fittings, 400 miles of scaffold tube, 80,000 scaffold boards which is enough to carpet eight football pitches, enough staircase were erected to get all the way to the top of Ben Nevis and Snowdon and all that bridging required 4,000 aluminium beams. All totals to around 7,000 tonnes or 500 lorry loads of scaffolding.

The M5/railway/canal shot encapsulates how the UK made itself smaller and smaller...and with the canals still being used as waterways for leisure and living the (now) slowest advancement in making the UK smaller is still beautifully viable.

Really enjoyed watching this episode as an exiled Brummie. FWIW .. there used to be a nightclub, the Opposite Lock, in Gas Street Basin ( just by the lamp @ 15:57 in video) during the 60s & 70s. The entrance/exit was on the towpath and it was a reasonably regular occurrence for someone to tip into the cut in the wee small hours when drunkenly leaving, and the occasional shoulder-barge was sometimes to blame. 😉

Glad you enjoyed my home city. I cycle alot on those mean towpaths. Anyway when you approached Rotton Park Junction you would have gone past a brick pillar in the middle of the canal. This carried a railway back in the 1880's to Harborne and there was an accident at the canal junction and one of the bridges is different after a coal wagon derailed and too the bridge out. You were headed down the Worcester & Birmingham which passes close by to where I live.
Edit to add at 13.35 you can see the bridge when the train is passing 😉 look at the other bridges and you will see they are more rounded.

Foxes Afloat I can’t say we had much trouble which was surprising really! We had one chap sit on our boat although that was relatively harmless. We did have one night where someone was throwing a large rock at the window outside our boat but Dan went out and diffused the situation somewhat (at least enough to stop him throwing the rock). Apart from that’s its been okay although you do get a little noise from the bars and night clubs towards the Mailbox. The internet was pretty terrible for us. Our Three wifi device just wouldn’t work but EE was just about usable. We were thinking about moving up towards the Sealife a bit in search of better internet but it sounds as if it was just as bad where you were 😔 xxx

Wow, wow, wow. Another top notch video and conversation. The both of you seemed really excited to get back there. As you said, back to the original start. First city traveled to. Awesome. And the Fox is looking great after that polish! Some of the shots where you had the camera looking down the side ( 5:18 )... wow! I'm a race car guy so I love shiny paint! And you can't tell the edge where it meets the sky.
Does anyone else want to know what Shaun has with 'Titford Canal'??? Hahaha....
A little different with the 'industrial' surroundings but change is nice. When you were going under the M5 with all of the scaffolding, all I could think about is what that would look like at night with some lighting around it, maybe spooky and spiderweb-like.
You spoke of the way there were 4 layers with the new line, old line, M5 and the train. Here in Atlanta, we have something the locals call 'Spaghetti Junction'. It's where interstate 85 intersects interstate 285. Layer upon layer upon layer of roads. You should be able to find it on google maps. It's actually called the Tom Moreland Interchange. The intersection you showed had a lot more class than this one. This one is just made to move cars. LOTS of cars. When going over some of the higher ones, it reminds me of landing a plane (I few sailplanes when I was a little younger, then I got into racecars!!!).
And the graffiti! Some of that looks great ( 12:38 ). Should be called artwork. I know, it's a love/hate relationship. I can appreciate it but it can take away from the surroundings.
12:45 beautiful! Great picture for a screensaver.
Did you get to go to the sea life center (I've had several small aquariums).
Thanks again for sharing your lives with us. You both are so happy and excited with each other. And Dillon too! I'm not a poet so I don't have all of the words to express how these videos make me feel but I will say that it is a great way to start a weekend!
