- Hey everyone!
Wanted to share my car paint that I use all the time, apart from one secret in the recipe!
Of course this is just a base material, so any texture painting, imperfections and more, come after this. But this base provides you with a great starting point to get your car projects off the start line.
Drop a comment if you need any help.

Bloody brilliant!
Thanks dude 🙌🏻
Brother, I'm really thankful to you for this tutorial! I'm definitely gonna use these hints in my projects to get more realistic result!❤
No worries dude! Glad i can help 🙌🙌
Really enjoying the videos Ethan, great work and awesome portfolio.
Thanks so much, means a lot 🙌🏻
Great stuff Ethan. Blender feels like a breath of fresh air nowadays :)
Thanks Bruno! Yeah for sure, coming from 3Dsmax this software just makes everything so fun and visual. Unreal as well too
That is really helpful, thank you for sharing this Ethan ✨🙏🏼
No worries at all, more to come :)
looking forward for the scratches tut , great video :))
Soon come! Thanks!🙏🏻
@@ethdavis headlights and taillights materials also please 😅
excellent info - thanks
no worries! thanks for watching :)
Nice work!
Thanks dude!
I wish I could get my head around nodes etc. Fine following but damned if I need to create my own material haha.
A lot goes into this. Appreciated
Yeah it’s an odd thing to get your head around for sure.. some photoshop knowledge is a good starting point. I’m also very grateful for these kind of videos 🤣 cheers man
Nice to see tutorials by an expert in the field rather than an expert in making youtube videos. ❤Do you use Blender for the stuff on your website?
Thanks! Yeah man, blender for everything :)
Hey there! Thanks for sharing, great tips!
Any suggestions on an alternative method to isolate the highlights where to apply the voronoi texture? For some reason my normal input is pushing all of it to the back of the model in one concentrated area.
Hmm.. maybe try F3 - Recalculate normals, as well as making sure you’re scale and rotation is applied 1. If that doesn’t solve it let me know :)
@@ethdavis Thank you! I'll give that a try!
Great tutorial!
i got problems with the Voronoi Texture creating the normals. With big surfaces and a lower roughness value in the glossy shader, the flakes appear in a square shaped highlight around the light source. I would expect them to be circular. Exchanging the Voronoi with a noise texture fixes the problem, but the shape of the flakes itself are obviously weird then. Any hints? This is driving me crazy for days now!
Hey! Could you email or DM me on Instagram with a photo? Can’t wrap my head around the problem haha. I’ll help you there !
@ethdavis Sent you an email a few days a ago. Would be great to get your insights.
1 goal
nailed it!
could you maybe link the asset which you are using for the imperfections?
It’s called realistic touch on blender marketplace. But it’s essential just black and white textures, just already setup :)
@@ethdavis thank you for your fast response :)
@@ethdavis how do you make black and white textures ?
what keybind did you use to connect the linear light at 4:37?
You have to enable the node wrangler add on, it’s already built in. Then press CTRL - SHIFT left click on the node to view it
OMG I better had found this video before starting the whole rendering phase of my project D:
10/10 tutorial out there considering its public and free, others would just place a Patreon link and offer it for 5 bucks XD
Im currently starting to involve myself into the journey of 3D studying and CGI artworks... so i have 2 major questions if you dont mind to answer:
First of all, im currently working on a laptop and you know what that means, overheating, render interruptions from nowhere... Should i invest for a Desktop PC for my next hardware? Being the student i am, i probably will move around from city to city searching for studies so obviously laptops are way more easier to carry on... but the Desktop PC offers me better performance and less heating...
And for the second question: Im have been studying Autodesk Maya for 2 years now and its the only 3D software im used to use. Do you recommend me to start learning Blender? Or should i just keep going with Maya?
Usually people answer me with "If you started with Maya, keep on with it" but each time i try to search some tutorials for Maya only shows up Blender tutorials, and i also think that comparing Blender with Maya, i dont see the difference of why Maya is sooooo expensive, i could do the same with Blender and for free :/
I hope you dont get bored reading all this haha and btw im Spanish so sorry if my english is not that good ;)
Hey! Thanks for the kind words on the video, trying to provide as much as I can :)
There’s some great laptops out there pre than enough power, if you are moving around a lot then it wouldn’t be a bad idea to get a laptop. Computers are also really good so that’s up to you!
In terms of maya vs blender, maya is the industry standard, if you’re trying to get a job in a studio then I would definitely go with that. If you’re trying to become freelance than blender is the way to go! Yes they both do the same thing but companies don’t use blender that often. Thanks!
what addon do you use on 8:31
Realistic Touch! It's essentially just imperfection maps already setup
Is the commercial for porsche?
It’s not, just a test piece :)
@@ethdavis that screenshot looked like something official, great stuff man
thanks so much! :)
Where have you learnt all this?
I've worked in a cgi studio the past 5 years as a retoucher, they use 3ds Max however, but I've just learnt quite a bit from them and also youtube videos :)
@@ethdavis I wanted to model a 90s volvo and this paint trick, specially the orange peel to break up the reflections is top notch tip, glad you've decided to share your knowledge
You paid 150£ for the model ?
I didn’t, they provided it for my animation I’m doing :) good guys!
