I do use an AMD CPU though which is fine (My current setup is a Ryzen 7 5800x and an Asus ROG Strix RTX3080 12GB edition and I know Asus has recently been getting in to trouble for having issues with some of their products but I have never had any issues with Asus purchases and even my motherboard is an ROG Crosshair VIII)

    • @kathrynck
      @kathrynck Před 2 měsíci +2

      Probably the best bet, yeah. Although they'll launch at kinda high pricing.
      On the other hand, the more cache they put on the regular chips, the slimmer the benefit of X3D. Current gen goes from 64mb shared cache to 128mb with X3D. With 80mb cache on the 9950X, and no clock throttling for thermals (which X3D needs), it might be highly competitive with 9800X3D.
      Going from 5nm (7000 series) to 4nm probably won't have a huge effect. It's only 20% node shrink, and process node shrink is facing diminishing returns.
      I have a 7900X which I got a phenomenal price on. It works very well, but I'm kinda keeping an eye out for the last/best AM5 compatible chip before they change sockets.

    • @kathrynck
      @kathrynck Před 2 měsíci

      @@JM1L1T4NT 9000 series info dropped today. Looks like a fairly "modest" perf. boost over 7000 series. But at least the power usage is down (and presumably the heat will be down too). Current 7000 series "need" an undervolt to perform best and get the temps down. Hopefully 9000 will run well at stock settings.
      5090... hard to say what that will be like. It's still kinda early, lots of rumors, not a lot of things known for sure. Early rumors are that it will be immensely powerful, but also immensely power-consuming (wattage-wise). Then again, if it's as powerful (graphics-wise) as rumored, it should run _very_ well with an undervolt/underclock. It does seem like if the rumors are true though, it'll be _very_ expensive, even compared to a 4090.
      100% agree with not upgrading super often :) I went from a 4790K and a 1080 Ti to 7900X and 4090. And frankly, I probably could have gone another generation (albeit with no ray tracing) except I really wanted to go from 1440p to large-format 4k (4k being two and a half times more work for the gpu than 1440p).
      I feel pretty good about my 7900X and 4090. The 7900X was just a steal at the sale price I got it, I could sell it used and come out money ahead, so I can't complain there. I am watching carefully to see if the next gen (after 9000) will be AM5 or AM6. If a 10,000 series (or whatever it's called) is AM5, I'll get that in a 950 or 800X3D flavor. If not, I'll get 9950 or 9800 X3D to socket in my mobo. By the time 10,000 series specs are released, prices should be good on 9000 series chips. So it's kinda win/win.
      The 4090 devours 4k content. No complaints. Although in _some_ titles, it puts out some heat doing it. Also, DLSS 3 is better than I anticipated. Not a huge fan of frame-gen, but the AI upscaling is much better than I thought it would be. It's difficult to tell the difference between "quality" upscale (which is from 1440), and native 4k. Been running 4k native in winter, and DLSS 'quality' upscale in summer, to kinda regulate the room temperature where the computer is hehe. Pleasantly surprised to find that I can even upscale 1080 and 1440 streaming video content (as long as it's in full screen).
      I did downclock the 4090 about 5%, and undervolt it about 12%. And made sure the plug is in tighter than tight, and braced the card _thoroughly_ to prevent flex. It performs very near stock (like 97/98%) due to less thermal throttling. And it seems more likely to last a long time.
      Also undervolted the 7900X (no underclock, just power), for what turned out to be 'higher' performance, and less heat & power usage.
      Anyway, running 4k native _very_ solidly, and DLSS provides a _wide_ margin for future-proofing. Just want the "last" good AM5 cpu to better future proof that element, when the time comes.
      PS: I'm "mixed use" so I'm kinda divided/undecided between 950's and 800X3D's ;)

Ryzen 9 7950x is the fastest cpu for people who don't want 100° thermals, 300w consumption, 1200w PSUs, upgrading every 2 years to a new motherboard. Heck the 7800x3d is still the fastest gaming cpu easily surpassing, even though being a year older than the 14900k while consuming just 80w at barely 60°. @@Riyozsu You don't upgrade your motherboard. By the time you have to upgrade your CPU you would be upgrading your motherboard anyway irrespective of what manufacturer makes the CPU. You only replace your processor when the speed difference is big enough to significantly improve your use experience, and by that time your old motherboard would be obsolete even if it could house the new CPU. This "hey I don't have to replace my motherboard" is a fake argument made by people to rationalize choosing buying a slower CPU.
      The only thing that counts is speed. People will buy the fastest processor they get. And that includes any normal overclocking. The fact that overclocking is a thing proves that people are more than happy to use more watts to get more speed. Power is not an issue, provided you have enough.
