- Incredibly funky guitar powerhouse and occasional Vulpeck member Cory Wong visited the MusicRadar studio during his UK tour.
In this video. Cory gives us some brilliant tips on how to improve your funky playing. From right hand technique, to chord voicings.
Head to www.musicradar... for more news, reviews and tutorials.
"I don't know know what you're doing, you're just jamming on an A7"
Feels like a phrase I can use in everyday conversation
Not gonna lie, I felt called out by that statement. Lol. Jamming on a particular chord is generally what I do. I work to do it rhythmically (with some muting and articulation thrown in) so it isn't boring. But I never felt so called out before. 😂😅
I like my full chords. Big sadge. 🤣🤣🤣
This is an excellentllent piece of teaching.. Cory lays out the "problem" making his case in a very non-judgmental way, explains the fix focusing on the musicality he is imparting, demonstrates it, then reviews and reiterates the points. Not just a great player, a great teacher. Fantastic
Rick Greer i was thinking the same thing this video actually helped me out
Totally agree
agreed
This was the most tasteful "correction-if-you-want-it" guitar tutorial.
He forgot to mention that none of this works if you don’t wear a striped shirt
It's just part of his uniform, along with the white pants. He moonlights as a Russian sailor on Putin's Yacht.
And tape to keep your guitar from falling apart
Well I've learned the best time to wear a striped sweater is in fact, all the time
@@kevin_kevinsonbut he's missing one with a collar. Specifically turtle neck.
@@Six3rdy that is the kind
Tower of Power guy said "We play the same notes as everyone else, but shorter"
3:43 "I think of it as a tambourline with a ton of different pitches" - Jack Stratton
I accidentally turned on my metronome and it aligned PERFECTLY with his playing at 1:11
It was 120 BPM. Crazy.
This is a masterclass. The knowledge you get from a 6-minute video by Cory is insane, that's how good he is.
isnt that just good editing ? Anyone could have made the same points and they are universal to sounding good with funk
The telltale “funky stroke” marks on Cory’s strat are a thing of beauty, as is his mechanical jellyfish of a right hand
What he talks about at 1:43 is VERY true. I see people playing funk and not muting anywhere near enough. Two or three strings at a time!
I’ve reached the algorithm of guitar tutorials to finally come across my favorite band’s guitarist giving me funk lessons... who would’ve thought 💭
That right hand control is insane
The left hand tip has blown my mind - I have never connected the elegance and simplicity of how funk breaks down the basic chord in this way. So obvious when you think about it, but Cory explains it so well.
Really think this dude could give an hour masterclass and I'd be tuned in.
He’s got good control over the pick when strumming like that. I feel mine would eventually go flying across the room lol
Yeppers! Holding on to my pick is a problem I've had for a long time. Although I began as a teenager with fingerpicking, even using a thumb pick, trying to keep a hold of my flat pick during lots of right hand fast strumming has been a challenge. Now using Pickboy Pos-a-Grip picks and they help a *lot*. :)
You need to practice the heck out of holding it and try to find your ideal line between holding it tightly and holding it loosely. But you need to loosen it up slightly more than you'd expect. I've struggled super long with it for some reason
Feel is a big thing too
it can be learned over time
but some people GOT IT
Cory Wong GOT IT
I could listen to him all day..
the lesson about changing your voicings and filling the right frequency range is really great
position 4 strat, vox amp, good compressor
does cory wong even use a comp?
@@yomuthabyotch the amazing vulf compressor
@@yomuthabyotch he was using the wampler ego compressor not long ago. he also plays fender style amps.
@@yomuthabyotch he use it a lot
@@yomuthabyotch yup. Wampler ego. Really important for bringing your high strings out, especially when you are wacking away in the right hand
In my circle avoiding the notes reserved for bass and piano is required for proper complimenting, and the rootless or small voicings are called shell voicings. I will be working on right hand technique thanks to this instructors gentle "correcting" :)
Still trying to figure out that cartilage thing...
Looka da flicka da wrist (dat wrist!!!)!!!!
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yeah, that cartilage trick is OP AF.
He makes it look so easy
양념닭후라이드 it is
somebody give that pick guard a raise
He is fascinating to listen to, a true contemporary guitar hero!
Really really excellent, clear teaching here. I'd like to see a lot more from him.
A pleasure to here him express positively something that looks simple BUT is so very difficult!!Well done and thanks
I'm a drummer and i love Cory W. and Mark L. and i watch guitar lessons to understand why they are so cool :D
Remember people, even though he shows you fast paced funk leads, those leads can be slowed down and applied across a wide range of R&B and funk like grooves.
He is a serious player by all means!
Listen to players like Nile Rogers, Ray Parker Jr. just to name a couple.
Funk is a groove.
Once you get that bass line and the drums in sync, you can soar.
Funk is R&B's faster paced little brother!
Cory Wong could play in any funk or R&B environment!
He is that good!
Funk and R&B!
Music that makes you want to move!
Cory has the Funk!
Your right hand motor tip is the best advice i got in 8 years playing! Saw a video about this 3 years ago and it changed my play 💜thanks so much!
This is such a good lesson. So concise and clear.
My new favorite guitar player!! Rhythm guitar players in general are soooo overlooked and underappreciated as to what they bring to the band. ( Even in rock Malcolm Young, John Lennon, and yes Eddie Van Halen is a tremendous rhythm player who happens to be pretty good at lead too! Lol... ) Watch the Vulpeck Madison Square Garden video and see him in his element. I was blown away by his energy and enthusiasm. You can see traces of it when he starts playing in his seat!
He forgot the number one tip: POSITION 4!
@@dutchdykefinger 4th position

THIS IS ALL I KNOW
We should give Steve a headband ready? Steve.... Steve.... Steve Steve Steve! ..... ba, dabadaba, dabadaba,..... 4th Position..... this is is all I know in 3,2,1!
Nile Rogers said he never plays more than three strings at a time. Also, the less you hear the funkier it feels.
Pure edutainment, right there.
I always wondered why Cory Wong played how he played. He plays phenomenally, but i l didn't understand why he played a little.......thin. He left a LOT of room whenever he played, and I was confused by that.
But now I understand why he did that. He's like a mid/high range rhythm section member. I dig it.
And of course Cory has BEEN had the right hand on lock. Looka da flicka da wrist!!!!!!
Learned a lot from this.
Thank you for this. Helps
i don't play guitar but i feel like these tips can be great for a beginner (talking about myself, lol) to understand some composition, if you try to dig into them a bit. saying this because many guides/tutorials/whatever teach fundamental music theory. this one goes into my bookmarks, thanks
Love that beatin up strat!!
Cory Wong explaining how to be Cory Wong.
It only takes you to be Cory Wong. 😂👏
You're amazing, keep up the great work!
This was a really good lesson
Man you are so straight up and to the point and I love it.
I feel like every thing Cory Wong touches, becomes funky. He’s like the King Midas of funk.
Very well explained. Thanks.
Great lesson! 👍
Thanks for the tips!
Great video! Just wondering if you could repeat this video for lefty's...😂🥁🎸❤️ Come back to Asheville NC!
Im actually trying to incorperate this style of playing and chords with more traditional rock power cords to try and creat stuff thats heavier but also funky/groovy
i just wanna say this style of motoric up and down motion with the right can also be represented easily in rock and blues music. Look up Wilco Johnson and his band Dr Feelgood. You'll notice, much like Cory, he plays with his thumb over the top, and the constant motion of his right hand allows him to play both rhythm and lead simultaneously. Folk musicians do this a lot too (Guy Van Duser's Stars and Stripes Forever is a great example of this, where he plays both parts on one six-string guitar simultaneously)
Ty so much. Love your stuff cant believe you got a lesson on here this is so cool ty ty ty
This was the most helpful how-to I've seen yet. Thank you Mr Wong
You know, some people explain things and they make no sense. This presentation makes sense. Thanks!
It also helps that he is holding the pick a la George Benson witch gives you a very strong upward motion, keeping down and upstroke really balanced.
Nice strat reliced by the force of a pick in 1600 revoultions per minute
His parents must love Vulfpeck, since they named him after one of their song...
Happy 50th birthday cory!
Awesome guy! Thanks for the tips!
this is gold!!! thank you!
That wrist bro ✊
Total GOLD ! Thanks !
Thanks for these great tips! How do you prevent the pick from sliding? Do you use the rounded end?
Realy nice i love it i need learn this
Thank you so much
damn cory! u a dope ass teacher brotha!
Wowww that sounds amazing, please explain the technique more slow,!!!! Even the paint on your guitar is demaged, is for that technique?????
Awesome lesson, seems like a really nice guy, that strats seen some stuff tho...
Favourite guy in music. Also, wondering when he took the tape off his pickup selector.....
2:06 he playing limp bizkit "faith"
Nah, it's called the Bo Diddley beat and it's used in a lot of songs. Also "Faith" is a George Michael song, not Limp Bizkit.
He looks so disappointed by my right-hand timing when he starts his playing stare.
Man I wish this guy was my guitar teacher.
Brilliant! Thanks for the amazing lesson
youve gotta feel it
Cory you legend, thanks
When you are striking all of your strings, how much of your pick should you have out? I struggle with muting, clean string striking, pick moving around when trying to play. I now realize how great strats are
Ahhh the tone!!!!
Great lesson!
No offense to the featured guitarist in the vid but check out Ross Bolton's (RIP) videos. He was doing this style of guitar decades ago. Obviously Nile before that. Also check out Carlos Alomar (Bowie's long time guitarist).
I need a vulfpeck and ghostnote collab
I never thought there would ever be a rhythm guitar player to beat Nile Rogers, but here he is!
After doing that right hand movement for a while, I feel like I've been working out in the gym doing curls. Maybe I'm keeping my muscles too tense.
he is very good
Cory Wong, probably one of the few guitarist in the world that doesn't thinks only on himself
Would LOVE to see the knobs on that Vox. Great Strat/Vox tone I am struggling with.
What plectrum material and thickness does he use ?
cory you the man
Excellent advice! Thanks Cory my dude (: my band thanks youuu lol
"Their time is not amazing"...lol
aye aye captin
Ross Bolton smiles in the sky!
He should have said: Always approach that major third with that dirty 3rd minor... ALWAYS
Awesomeness!!!
not only a rippn guitar player... but quite the modular and synth junkie! I'm going to practice your rubber hand skills! That's some wild and killer sounding strumming. thx!
Wa'h'ayyyy , Groovie Brother !! 👍 👀

2:42 my hand when a fly tries to land on me
even then my hand is not as fast :-)
' right hand motor is running '
Timing ,.... that's my answer
Cool!
Amazing
Love it!
Big tip to help with rhythm element is to play with a backing track. Just a disco drum loop on GarageBand on or whatever in the background really helps the funk.
damn that's good stuff
