here's one of the videos from my guitar course! www.woooong.com/guitarcourse this is one of the many lessons that applies to musicians on ANY instrument!
Watching this knowing fully well I can't strum with that speed and consistency but still locked in to learn, it's like a chicken watching the birds flying overhead.
I've seen this advice already, and it's a great one, but I still struggle to play in time even with all the accountability in the world. Nothing some good practice can't fix tho! Started to actually practice with a metronome for a week and it's already way better that it was Also, playing into a DAW and actually seeing what you've played on a grid helps me understand when I rush (i almost never drag), the hard part is to connect what you see on the screen with what you feel while playing. I almost never know that I'm rushing while playing, but i think I found that feeling when I'm spot on. I will use this technique when I'm ready for sure, thanks Cory!
Really great stuff Cory. Thank you. Agree. Particularly when I record, I'll take a 120 bpm song and then record it in 60, and it allows the room to add a ton of swing if you want. Less grid, more bump and run.
First watched Victor Wooten teach this probably 20 years ago and really stuck with me. Great one Cory!! BTW love your collab with Dirty Loops. Everyone check out Turbo. Sick!! Stanky. Keep it groovin. Cheers!
Oh this is really brilliant man. Thank you. A topic that is basically never talked about or at least not very often. As a drummer for 25 years this really is a deep but important cavernous hole. I realized very similar things in the studio, which I know most recording musicians do, that sometimes you think you're playing something fast or slow at a particular tempo, perhaps because your limbs are moving fast but you listen back and it's almost astonishing that you were that off the mark. Perception of time in different environments is so crucial but can also be so elusive.
There are THOUSANDS of DISCO-FUNK amazing songs with these rhythms , it would be great that somebody would make a video where all these immense guitar riffs from the very famous Nile Rodgers Chic to the less known but good as well like hamilton bohannon..Cerrone...bionic Boogie...Gino Soccio...Change...Brothers Johnsons...Jim Capaldi...Patrice Rushen...Jimmy Bo Horne...chaka Khan...Rick James...EW&F....Loose Ends...and LOTS of others!!!
This exercise really reminds me of Victor Wooten and Anthony Wellington's rhythm/tempo lesson from their DVD! Wonder if Cory took inspiration from that, know he's a huge Wooten fan! Such a great lesson.
Victor Wooten has been teaching this for years :) not only his DVD but on different interviews and lessons all over youtube, plus his music camps. Highly likely that Cory has seen it.
I have issues with adhd and so struggling with timing in practice or on stage is a constant battle. Especially if I'm not feeling the song but other songs I love playing I have no issue. Adhd sucks
@@dazsmith890 it's just a drum machine/sampler in a DAW. Just load up whatever sounds you want to use, draw notes on the grid and then you have a metronome.
"Random E7 thing?" That's _the_ Wong riff!
This wasn't a guitar lesson...this was an every instrument lesson.
Respect and thanks for putting this out for the people Cory lad.
More than the fact that this is a solid exercise tip, I’m super impressed with how well Cory can articulate and explain these intangible topics
If you haven't heard the Wong Notes pod get on that. Lots of insights from Cory while speaking with other musicians.

I wish I had started with this kind of thing 25 years ago. Invaluable
Love this, Corey! This is a great exercise for other, 'non-drum' instrumentalists who play a percussive role as well!
Started to turn southern there around 0:35 😂
YIKES

I can't wait until he goes into groove and pocket, this was amazing and I love you dude, absolutely awesome exercises even for non-musicians!
I love you Cory! I have played guitar less than a year. I will practice this!
Love this! Good stuff Cory!

I've never heard of timing being subjective, thx for the great explanation and exercise!!

Remember me the same. Great tips here and in that DVD
Right down to the end slate music. Good catch.

You are so damn inspiring
Thanks
thanks a lot!!
Felt so anxious you might lose it with only the 4th beat, oh man i need to work out my timing this way!

This is the film maker in me being nitpicky, but the color balance between both your alternating shots is different.
Sergio…please tell us why we should care
When can we buy that shirt Cory?!
That right hand is just satisfying
💓
What metronome do you use? Having trouble finding a good one
drumbit online drum machine, or metronomeonline.com
@@CoryWongMusic thank you so much!
What software is Cory using for the metronome?
Yeah what metronome is that?
You know you have GAS when you need the same metronome as Cory. Haha. But for real. What is it? Or is Petar just that good?

Cory really doesn't have a wrist.
Hey Cory, has anybody ever told you that you look like Jim from Audiomo Music?
My firs time watching this guy play wtfff his right hand??
What chord is this?
Fb9
E9, you play it x7577x. It looks like he’s just moving the same shape up and down the neck, it’s a very common chord in funk
@@nickchambers3935 isn't that a m9 chord? 9 would be x7677x
Me who doesnt own or plan to own a guitar:
Hmm, interesting
crazy how much structure is in something that just seems to flow
Why the fuck does his hand look like an octopus
Lol this thing is old as world
