One thing I'm currently working on that has really held me back is the way i hold my pick. *BUT* , and this is a *BIG BIG* but. For me anyway. Dont try to emulate the exact way that your favorite guitarisy or teacher hold his picking hand. For me anyway, I've been learning that *my* wrist and hand stay more loose and relaxed with my middle , ring and little fingers kinda loosely touching the body of the guitar for some parts and then sorta tucked in for other parts. I've found that there is no *one* particular way to hild the pick at all times. Ive been playing for 35+ years and I feel im some ways that I've gone all the way back to day one. Its been a week now and I'm starting to get to where if i hold the pick the way i always have, it feels weird now. I wish there had been something like CZcams around back when i was 15. Just so much incredible information just floating around for free these days.

Fastest way to learn anything on guitar is to go for it knowing you're going to suck at it at first, but with enough repetition and focus, one day you'll get it.

That is probably the lick (Zakk Wylde) that changed my playing level altogether. I was in a plateau for so many years because I was self taught and never took lessons (much) and eventually I noticed after watching my favorite guitar players on video I started to see how their technique was completely different from mine. I started truing to play and make it look more like them. More structured, more controlled, less convulsive looking. Zakk Wylde licks, especially the first part of the solo for Mr Tinkertrain that is kinda similar to No More Tears. Then some Dimebag stuff. After a while I noticed I was able to play faster with less effort. It should look similar to water flowing when you play. To the point where it feels almost effortless. The more you try to force it and tense up, the shittier your playing will seem.
I got more out of this than I thought I would. Your playing (rightfully) gets a lot of attention, but you are a very good teacher as well. Thanks!

Great stuff per usual. Started working on the pentatonic 6 bc of you and has propelled my playing in the past year
Noticing how you start with upstrokes, I deeply relate. Years ago I used to watch all these tutorials for fast alternate picking starting with downstrokes and never worked for me. It was one day that sort of came as a revelation that I was able to play those licks if I started with upstroke, and I never trained or practiced them like that before. It possibly had to do with my general way of picking or bad habits that are deeply engraved in my head, that just makes it easier for me to process alternate picking with an upstroke
This USUALLY depends on the angle you naturally hold the pick. Tip pointing up or down. And that has to be pointed out when someone tells you to start on a down stroke.

@@CameronCooper You very well deserve it ,….I’m a lead player also,… I taught myself my own unique style of running up and down the fretboard ,..Basically improvising , But the first time I saw your video,…it was “Steal these licks “, I could practice right along with you and for the first time in my life ,..understand every detail , I can see your picking also which is what I needed help with . I practiced about a week on one lick and unlocked a new approach ,speed and the walls came down. I’ve been recording your videos so I always have them . ..just wanted to say Thanks ,..and You are a no. 1 at teaching and Shredding. 🎸 ,..I’m gonna catch up,…I might be 90 but I’ll get there.

I’m telling you man,..when I put a video of you and then you got this great trick to teach people…where you show one little section ,..like a mini lick,..and then you’ll say ,..experiment with that for a while ,….or youll say like,… this is a killer lick all on its own . …that’s how you helped me out because I’ll find one riff like that ,…which I need to work on that weak spot but I’ll pause your video and be jamming through all types of variations,…and then 30 minutes later ,I realize I’m still on the 1rst or 2nd lick,….it’s crazy ,…thanks ,…yeah you should keep those teaching tricks in your tool bag,..cause that’s what gets motivated Guitarists experimenting and then improving ,..

This has to be the MOST helpful video I have seen for learning to shred. It's like my abilities have been there, I just need the knowledge on where to play.
Learn your route notes and your keys. That would be my advice. Helps you give your licks a home
Left handed with right handed guitar here either! Very useful licks! The ones I will certainly incorporate to my playing. I was trying to create some by myself, but this video is a real shortcut.

I just wanted to say thank you. I feel like this is what I have been missing. I've been playing for about 15 years and to be honest. I suck. To a non player I am sure I sound like a pro but i have zero improv. I skipped a lot of the basics so I could sound cool lol. 15 years later struggling to find my groove I feel like this video was it. these simple tricks and patterns really helped me find my groove and travel up and down the fretboard.

Very nice practice runs mr Cameron i started using a pick that looks suspiciously alot like yours from dans guitar store (precision pick) and is best pick i ever used , love it , thanks for scale lessons
I love this video. This proves that there really are no rules for playing guitar. There are so many different ways to play guitar. Whatever technique allows you to play your very best, is the correct way to play. This is a real fact, and one that's sadly overlooked by so many guitarists. Any technical fingering can be adjusted or manipulated into whatever works best for that individual. This is a great example of that. 😊
