Mercury Outboard Tower of Power Idle Issues

  • First of all, once again I normally do not work on Tower of Power motors, but in this case, it had already been to another shop a total of four times, and it just needed a little tweaking on a few settings.
The control box had been replaced with a different one, and the idle was set at about 2,000 rpm's. Dropping it into gear at that speed is extremely hard on the clutch dog in the lower unit, so it had to be addressed. The final setting out of water with no back pressure should be closer to 1,000 rpm's to achieve a 800 rpm in the water at idle with back pressure.
The base timing was off which is set by backing off of the timing with the bolt and lock nut as seen lowering the RPM.
Once that is done, the pre-load on the linkage is increased by in this case moving the barrel on the throttle cable three turns to the front of the engine. That actually put it right back as it was prior to the control box swap, as can be seen by the color of the threads on the shifter cable.
This in turn allowed for the shifter to once again have a warm up on the throttle.
Also the correct spark plugs were put back in the engine. NGK-BUHW.
Also we dropped the lower unit and put in an impeller. The old impeller had already dry rotted and shed a blade, and a few more were about to to the same thing.
The final setting are shown by the next video, since these were just rough settings to get the RPM closer to prescribed rpm.

We are getting out of peak boating season in Northern Michigan, at least for the purpose of turning something over for a profit. I think I will probably pass on the 90hp TOP this time. If I knew it ran that would be one thing. These motors are just too heavy and cumbersome for one guy like myself to maneuver around in the garage. Maybe next summer.

My problem is that the last time I was on the water the throttle got stuck and that distributor won’t rotate back to idle speed now.

I have heard mixed feelings on TOP engines because of the ignition distributor cap being upside down and many people don't like them. Has that been your reason? I do see quite a few OMC's with power packs gone and one of them pulse packs on the 100hp go for about $300.. I'm looking at a 90hp merc for 100.. its a 1969.. if it runs do you think I should pick it up and keep or resell? Thanks in advance..

Can the plug wires be replaced on these or do you have to replace the entire distributor cap? I have one wire that has pulled out and left the crimped end inside the cap.

Hello, i have a 1983 mercury TOP 90hp - we notice that the idle speed is very low and once in reverse going slow or in neutral for a extended period of time the engine will shut off. If I tighten the screw you did in the video will that raise my idle speed so going in reverse at slow speeds and staying in neutral the engine wont shut off? thanks for the help! great video by the way.

I guess I have a problem with the TOP is that by the time I usually see it, so many people have worked on it to try to fix it that I spend too much time just getting it to the original settings. Only then can you find the original problem.
Did that make any sense? LOL Larry

Hello, I have the same motor but a 1975 mercury 1150 115hp and i bought it not running for a deal with a boat and decided to rebuild it and i replaced the wires and the computers and the trigger and the motor started running, but it will not start up with out spraying starting fluid and when it starts up and you shut it off and it starts without any starting fluid but after its not running for about 20-30 mins it wont start with out the starting fluid again. and when we took it out on the lake it revs up in neutral but when you switch to forward or reverse it doesn't rev high and goes at slow speed

I am not the best one to advise anyone on the tower of power motors. I have a hard enough time trying to make one run when it is in front of me, never-the-less giving the advice where I can not touch the motor. Sorry Larry
