Now in the Super era it is. The Gospel of Dragon Ball according Toyotaro and the Gospel of Dragon Ball according Toriyama as both are canon. Manga and Anime are both following their own canonical laws and history. Z is the Old testament and GT is like the book of Enoch and original Dragon Ball is like Genesis. The Dragon Bible.

What I really appreciate is that when Toppo abandoned his justice it kind of paralleled Majin Vegeta. And Toppo may as well have been telling Vegeta that he’d have to abandon himself to defeat him, and Vegeta really looked at himself and knew he couldn’t abandon himself again.
He said he doesn’t abandon nothing and gains more power which is definitely a major contradiction to his motivation in the Majin saga.
    The character development tho!!!

I loved the meaning behind their fight, so much that Jiren sided with Vegeta over the matter. Vegeta's finest moment yet!
However, whereas Vegeta's selfishness was why he allowed Badidi to turn him into Majin Vegeta, Toppo went G.O.D. because his universe was on the line, thus Toppo going G.O.D. also made him similar to Gohan when the latter unlocked SSJ2. It's to the point that Gohan vs. Toppo should've continued their battle despite the former struggling against the latter compared to Goku and Vegeta holding their own against the Pride Trooper leader.
Still, I loved Vegeta vs. Toppo and I'm glad that it was the former who took out the latter by using Final Explosion successfully.

    • @Jiron127
      @Jiron127 Před 5 lety +32

Vegeta abandoned nothing as majin. He was always about his pride and wanted to beat goku fair and scare. No great ape. Vegeta was holding himself back for years because he never fought for love/desperation. But survival. Or his own selfish reasons. That's why piccolo said vegeta would lose his body upon dying.
There was a small clip right b4 vegeta cheap shotted goku. Of vegeta saying "he abandoned everything and had no loyalty etc". Goku called him out on it and said it was bs. Hence why goku said " Liar!! Talk all you want vegeta, but you'd have to convince yourself of it first". The whole majin thing w/vegeta was vegeta being exactly as he was prior to settling on earth. Vegeta killed people at the tourney, knowing they could be wished back. He wanted to beat buu and be the savior. Not goku.
To your point, toppo did strike a cord in vegeta's heart. But for slightly different reasons. Toppo gained power and gave up everything for survival. Vegeta is the opposite. He never gave up his pride or roots as a saiyan warrior. No matter how strong he got. This fact is exacerbated because he saw earth and his family as driving points to survive.
Ultimately the whole majin spell was a blessing in disguise: Babadi's magic did actually unlock vegeta's potential.

    WILD THEORY:
It’s been a long time since I’ve watched this arc or read it in the manga, but I remember thinking about it a lot back in the day cause it was/is still one of my favorite Vegeta story arcs. It always bugged me though how the fight was undercut by Goku holding back the way he did, and despite the entire fight seeming even, there wasn’t as really much suspense as it seemed. So I came up with a super head canon theory to explain this, and imo make it a much more enjoyable watch/read. Disclaimer, Vegeta is my favorite character and as a Vegetard I’m gonna be severely over hyping him with this, but bear with me.
The theory goes like this: when Goku unlocked SSJ3, we saw in his eye his body devolve from great ape down to an infant right before he finished the transformation. This isn’t really ever explained (to my knowledge), but the way I interpreted that was meaning that part of unlocking SSJ3 meant acceptance of ones self and true nature, accepting your past, etc. basically having a clear mind and sense of purpose, and self assuredness. Skip to the Vegeta/Goku dialog before/during the fight. Vegeta says on multiple occasions how his past losses and loss of pride have affected him, his confidence, and self worth. He idolizes the old him, the “perfect warrior” who was heartless and cold before he ever encountered Goku or the rest of the Z fighters. Since then, Vegeta has never been self assured. He’s struggled with who he was, and after meeting people that changed him, who he wants to be. These mental barriers IMO are the reason he could never reach SSJ3, because unlike Goku, he was to conflicted to accept who he really was. At least at this point in the series.
That changed when he became Majin Vegeta. Looking at the fight, they’re very clearly holding back and toying with each other. Flaunting skill over power, and slowly working their way up in intensity because it’s obvious they genuinely enjoy what they’re doing. For different reasons, but to the same effect: they’re having fun. And they’re doing what they’ve done countless times before, which is ignore the stakes for the sake of the best fight they can get. This leads both of them to the strategy of playing it slow and gradually increasing/matching each other in power while they dance and try and find openings in each other’s fighting style. This is where the crux of the theory comes in. We as an audience know Goku is holding back, Goku does, but Vegeta doesn’t. If they were allowed to keep going, I think Goku would eventually have to go SSJ3 to beat Vegeta after a long and grueling battle, finally trying to break the tie in their strength and gain a meaningful advantage. At this point, I think Vegeta would have a bit of a breakdown, but ultimately be able to match him and go SSJ3.
He would see for the first time all fight, and for the first time in years, Goku going all out. Which is what he wanted more than anything, to beat Goku at his best. When he sees this, it would inspire him to push himself and remember why he went to such lengths to get the opportunity he has. The same way he unlocked base SSJ from self hatred and frustration. He’d be seeing his chance for closure slipping away, and fall into that same impulsive rage mindset. Only, due to him throwing away his attachments to everyone and everything that isn’t his pride and power, he would have a clear mind and sense of purpose and hit SSJ3 in that moment. The same way Goku unlocked base SSJ to protect others, and Vegeta did it for himself. Opposite motives, same result. But both required a sense of purpose and self assuredness combined with emotion, which is only exaggerated more in SSJ3. And that fight would have given Vegeta both of those, replicating how he matched Goku’s transformation back in the Android arc.
I don’t think even Vegeta realized this, since 1 he wasn’t pushed that far in the cut-short fight, and 2 by the time he freaks out about Goku holding back, he had already overcome his Majin phase. Which is exactly why he never did/never will achieve SSJ3. When Vegeta over came Babidi he switched back to being a decent person again, and being the opposite of what he spent most of his life being. By doing that, he gave up his self assured mindset (albeit for a better one overall) and in doing so, accepted that he was wrong for most of his life and is doing better now than in the past. And by accepting his past as wrong, he setup mental barriers that would never let him reach the level of self-righteousness needed to unlock SSJ3. He unknowingly missed his one and only chance to match Goku in that form, but still gave it up willingly because he realized that morals are more important to him than power. Which is echoed in his sacrifice, and his acknowledgment of Goku at the end of the Buu fight. He’d rather be a good person and second best (at least until Super) than an awful and empty person at the top of the ladder. Which is where his character development comes full circle from when we first met him.
The real difference being, Goku spent his whole life acting right, and knowing he was right. Vegeta spent most of his life acting wrong but thinking he was right. When he realized that and changed for good, he grew as a person but changed too much to ever have the self assuredness of Goku, or the self assuredness needed to unlock SSJ3. He only had it for a short time when he was Majin and “reawakened the evil in his heart”, but ultimately recognized that Goku was right all along, not him, and chose to grow as a person, stopping him from growing in power.
TL:DR - You need to be self-righteous to become SSJ3. Goku was, and in that fight Vegeta was too and probably could have unlocked it if it went long enough. But the fight was cut short and he ultimately chose to be a good person, unknowingly giving up his chance at unlocking SSJ3.

A journey of pride becoming humility, and although its a bit shaky, *Majin Vegeta* is an important part of Vegeta's story. It not only shows his inner mentality those past few years, but it also shows how far he's come compared to his first appearance in the Saiyan Saga.

Being the English dub, I find the scene where he's talking to Piccolo and then Trunks and Goten (before knocking them out) to be spooky with the music that plays throughout that scene. Eerie, ominous, and you just knew Vegeta was thinking of something drastic (and at the time, seemingly permanent)!
