I agree. The claim that it's equivalent to 16GB in a Windows laptop doesn't seem right. RAM is definitely more efficient with these M chips, but efficiency is not the same as capacity.

Tbf, I have M1 MacBook Air base model. The 8GB Ram is good for working on one app at a time. Till now I didn’t face any problems working on FCP, Logic Pro, OBS, and other apps… once I start using multiple apps at once I may get a notification that I have to close one app.

@@OthMar39 My friend who is not in tech told me that his laptop starts slowing down once he opens a few chrome tabs and MS office. I have been around since the start of PCs. And basically used 8GB over the last 40 years. And have no issues at all. I know many people that use only 8 GB and are fine. We are not all in the CZcams bubble that uses Pro apps. I don't even think I use an app that would stretch a MacBook Air. It is hard for me to accept your conclusion that we should start at a higher config and obviously a higher price as that would mean I would have to pay extra like I would do in Windows land and that is unfair on someone like me that only needs base spec but love a premium device as I keep my laptops for 7 to 10 years and I'm willing to pay extra for quality.

I do software development and photography professionally, and honestly my fav feature is the SD card port. I use it everyday and it's just so nice that when I need it, I don't have to think about where I put the dongle. Oh and the performance / screen is crazy. What a worthwhile upgrade! I want to use one as a portable workstation and for what i guess some would call "complex" video editing, but now I'm very unsure, and you may have just convinced me to look at the Macbook Pro lineup instead. Im not very wealthy, but i do like the continuity and quality of these systems, so it may be worth it overall! If you're comfortable with opening the machine and add a 1mm layer of thermal pad on the CPU that makes contact with the bottom case then you don't need the base 14" Macbook pro, as long as you don't care much about the screen and the ports. I would do that and of course I will upgrade the Macbook airs ram and storage even if it's very expensive, it would be still cheaper than specking up the 14" Macbook pro (with the base M3 chip), the best thing to do as long as you don't come from a pro, max or Ultra M chip, it should be perfectly fine for content creation, just upgrade the ram to 16gb and the GPU to 10 core (storage is optional since it doesn't make a difference performance wise) it will get the job done.

best reviewer for sure, dishing out info like no other. These videos are so informative and to the point. I recently made a big decision to ditch my 16pro for the 15 air, one big reason being the weight. I plan to travel a lot later this year and the lighter chassis brings so many benefits. Tried the 14pro but unfortunatly the screen real estate is simply not on par with the 16/15. So 15 air is my only choice. I do wish it has more ports though. To the round: I know the MacBook Pro 14 with M3, 16/512 is not often recommended. I actually wanted to order the Air (same specs), but now I'm a bit unsure whether the fanless design could be a problem. My most intensive tasks: Parallels + Magic The Gatering Online and Magic Arena (native Mac OS). Does anyone here have any experience with this? Expect of this, just general surfing/browsing and music edition 2 times a year. Pro costs 1800 in this configuration, the Air 1400 (Europe). 400 more for just Promotion wouldt be worth it, but the missing fan on the Air confusses me... M3 Pro is sadly around 2100.

So I've been a PC guy for 40 years. I've worked professionally in the industry. I never used Apple. Due to work, I was forced to use a Macbook air for 3 years. I also had a premium 4k touchscreen dell laptop. I never used the Dell, it's slower, clunkier, bigger, battery dies quickly (despite it being a $2500 laptop).
So now 4 years later, I want a new laptop. I got the macbook air m3. You mention the price for the hardware as an issue. The VALUE proposition isn't about the hardware value--it's about the experience of the system. No crashes, lightning fast, incredibly simple, and MacOS which is just undeniably superior to any awful bloated windows system.
You're paying for the experience, not the hardware--and that's what makes it most vaulable.

But once I figured out that 512 was terribly short to run anything with virtual machine, which became a mandatory due to platform shift and doesn't have a good performance since it needs to be x86, the 16+512 was not even close...
So, with the return, I got ASUS G14! Which came with 16GB of memory soldered with an empty SO-DIMM slot and I had a leftover 2TB 2280 M.2 lying around from my desktop PC upgrade, this G14 is now 32+2T with ample power to run everything I need. Even with virtual machines!

That is always a problem when you have soldered RAM and SSD and it is advisable to buy what you need. I wouldn't blame Apple for that as they based their M-chips on the A-chips which have both soldered RAM and storage. You will find this will be the case with Snapdragon X Elite and even now Intel uses soldered RAM as the latest fastest RAN does not come in modular form. It's a case of adapting and understanding that it is important to buy what you need and maybe a little bit more for future-proofing as the world is changing and technology always moves on.

Meh, I would probably borrow or bring up some extra cash and go for the MacBook Pro 14 with the vanilla M3 chip. At least that way, I do get good sustained performance, the gorgeous mini-LED display and the additional HDMI port, a better all rounder laptop than the MacBook air.

As usual thanks for the advice on the new MacBook Air. I do believe Apple would is doing a disservice by not including 16 gigs for the base model

But if they did, it would cost more! So, I do not get that argument. If they started at the recommended configuration of 16GB/512GB, the Air 13-inch would cost $1500, which is what it costs now! Remember, all premium laptops cost a similar amount, which is called equilibrium pricing. Please name me one premium Windows machine for $1100 list (not discounted 2023 models) with 16GB/512GB. I will save you the trouble, there are none, e.g. the XPS 14 without the OLED display and lower PPI is £1600! The Surface Laptop 6 is £1999! The Galaxy Book4 Pro is £1600. The MB Air 13 M3 with that spec is cheaper than all these at £1500 suggesting that Apple is not overcharging versus comparable rivals.

@@andyH_England Storage has gotten significantly cheaper in the last decade and an upgrade to 16GB + 512 GB (both soldered) is not going to cost more than $80-100 for Apple, yet they charge $400 for the same. Companies need to be held accountable for taking consumers for granted, be it Apple or anyone.
There are very good Windows laptops with 16GB RAM + 512/1TB SSD, dedicated graphics, and very capable processors from AMD. These cost right in the MBA bracket and outperform it except for the battery life. Check out Asus, Acer and Lenovo. If you can't find, let me know, I will share some links here.

@@andyH_England It will not cost more. Your opinion is limited to very limited set of laptops. Memory both RAM and SSD has got significantly cheaper in last few years and 16GB / 512GB baseline specs are just $80-100 for Apple not more than that (considering all the internal architecture and tightly integrated components since I work in the industry). We need to STOP allowing companies like Apple to ship $1100-$1600 laptops in 2024 with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD.

Doesn't matter to me. Glossy needs to be 500 nits or higher for me, though, as it needs to combat reflections

I love matte finish. Dirt is not spotted as easily, easier to clean as well, less reflections too.
Glossy display laptops get more dirt from even the keyboard, as the glass can touch the keyboard slightly, while matte display are a bit into the bezels.
