This is such an interesting video to watch two years later, post-pandemic. I only watch Seth Meyers, and during the pandemic he has doubled and tripled down on including his writers and staff as such an integral part of the show. The show never felt more intimate than when Seth was yelling at the crew about how Scollins wrote X bad joke and you can just hear the cackles of *individuals* more than just of the crowd of an audience. Adding Wally as a mainstay to the on-camera cast is such a weird and pleasant thing I don't even know how to put into words what it feels like. Not to mention the interaction with the online audience because that's the only feedback he can get. It feels like Seth Meyers has really transitioned into a newer era of late night while keeping the bones of the old format the same.

One quick note is that I don't think NBC force Billy sing to do the old format. If you look at the show she took over, the previous version of it was well suited to her style, I thought she would have been a perfect host for the show Carson Daly was doing. I think she was so in love with the idea of being a brown woman hosting a late night show that the best idea she had was to do the exact same show as what comes on earlier.

I kind of get what Jimmy Fallon means with his whole sleeping vs napping logic.
    There's two possibilities:
    1. Jimmy Fallon defines "napping" as simply resting ones eyes for a while, maybe being in a meditative state without much thought, but still being awake for all intents and purposes.
    2. Jimmy Fallon calls the act of sleeping for several hours in the night "Sleep", and any sleep during the day or shorter than 6-8 hours "nap."
I would assume #1 to be the likelier explanation.

And Stephen setting ground rules to calm the group down enough to get through the interview without it being a negative and ugly thing is really cool. There are people that are nauseatingly horrible people. But there’s a way to be a person, and lowering yourself when you interact with them does good for exactly no one.
Instead of having a bit of a power trip of all these people who love Stephen and agree with his political views and letting it happen, he went with kindness and order. It should be common and nothing special or interesting, but it’s not. And I respect him for it.

Saying this as a transgender guy who would love to be in comedy and entertainment... I think the way you can most powerfully normalize being a minority in a position not usually held by minorities... is to just *BE* it. Continuing to draw attention back to how you're different from the people typically in your position does not serve to make people feel normal about the type of person you are being just as worthy of being in all kinds of positions in society. Act like a normal person, act like you belong where you are, and people will be like, "oh shit wait, such-and-such type of people are just like everybody else," even if it's happening not so consciously. You don't get that result if you constantly drawn attention back to how you're different (and demonize the majority/privileged type of person by conflating that category of person with being bigoted or prejudiced). That doesn't normalize women, people of color, lgbt people, etc, in positions not traditionally held by them at all. That doesn't mean you can't mention it, fit it into your works at all, but at your core, you should be competent and good at what your job is. Not just a token figure for progress. That doesn't create real change to peoples' perspectives and perceptions.

    • @SunflowerSpotlight
      @SunflowerSpotlight Před 4 lety +18

I think you have a great point. I feel like people feel confronted sometimes, and they feel like it’s so strange, it must change the person so much that they can’t be relatable or just like other people (with a differences that are stigmatized). I think it’s why seeing people who may be labeled something along the lines of “flamboyant,” tends to upset people who either aren’t interested in changing their perspective or who feel so negatively that it’s like an assault on what they consider to be a more sound and proper culture.
I also think that’s why a lot of people only change their perspective on these things when someone they’ve known for years happens to be gay, bi, trans, etc. They know that person so well, and they’re like other people. They’re often very good people. So they get confronted by something far more familiar. If they respond negatively, it seems it’s often a feeling of betrayal or shame, and even that often calms down.
I’m in the South and my religious parents had to make a decision to either accept my brother or cut ties due to a vague feeling of wrongness. They’ve been model parents, with the only exception being sexuality (I’m 29 and they expect me to be a virgin until I’m married, and it not really cause any big problems, since I’m considered such a good Christian; after all, they waited, until they got married... at 19, so that must be the same, right?). They landed on what they usually do. When in doubt, show love and be kind, treat others as you want to be treated. Mom’s on board partially because of the stuff that’s come out about the science side. My dad has low T and my brother does, and with treatment for that my brother still feels as he always has.
Dad is still getting his head around it. I think the thought is just still disturbing to him, since it’s really not an attractive idea to him. I’ve talked with him about the translation issue on if a Bible reference was talking about homosexuality or what could be an alternate translation referring to an adult molesting a kid. And even if the translation IS in reference to two people of the same gender and relative age, there were reasons it was a huge problem for people to be gay in that time. They were tribes trying to gain strength, power, influence, and land. They had to stick together and thrive to survive. A guy not having a wife and kids was such a huge deal in that culture, a betrayal of the lineage because it would end, a betrayal of the people because they need soldiers, seen as a betrayal of himself because who would take care of him if he became ill or old? He’d be a burden on the community, one they couldn’t easily afford. Letting that be accepted would be dangerous.
Since my Dad isn’t someone who believes the Bible is the final word and totally literal, that route of talking with him has been helpful, I think. Also talking to him about the general history of non-cis people through history is helpful. There are records of people who ended up either cross dressing or finding a niche in society where they were allowed to take on the role of the other gender, especially in Asia and Rome. Sometimes it was considered holy, others it was stigmatized. But that history does a lot to dispel the vague notion that this is somehow a new thing, that just didn’t exist before, when people were good and moral and normal. (Extreme sarcasm there.) We’re slowly becoming more accepting, getting past the tribalism we’ve always dealt with. As racism becomes less powerful, other categories of bias and bigotry will be focused on as the negative and small-minded mindsets they are.
To get back to the confrontation you were talking about. What bothers my father the most now that he’s had time and more information is when my brother goes off topic and says something pretty graphic about his relationships. It’s often a joke, but my family is pretty straight laced and... wholesome. We don’t drink or smoke or enjoy blue comedy. So my brother’s way of just spouting off stuff we’d rather not think about (like they’d not like to hear about me being intimate with a guy) is so confronting, in several ways; that it makes them feel more negative about his sexuality. It’s just his personality, and he’d do it if he was straight; it doesn’t say anything about the community, which is as diverse as any other. But to THEM, since he’s the gay person they know, it feels like “they” all are kind of loud and brash and “unashamed,” about it.
We are no longer tribes. We don’t need every male possible to procreate. All of these “abnormal” sexualities that result in fewer kids aren’t dangerous to the continuation of our societies and some studies are showing it can be beneficial to have more people who, in theory, wouldn’t have their own kids and could either help others with theirs or help older family members. It’s part of why they think large families have a higher rate of non-cis kids.
I didn’t mean to go on a tangent, but as a writer and editor it’s kind of... a risk with me. 😅 You posited a really good point I’ve not thought much about in a few years. Since I don’t have to deal with the stigma of being in the community (I’m demi, but since my parents don’t want me to have any temptations to succumb to, the effect isn’t what they’d consider problematic), I always question myself and my own bias when I think on these kinds of things. I don’t want to sort of... pass judgment from my position of ease. So thinking about negative aspects of the community that may be unintentionally be impeding progress is not something I often think about or enjoy doing. But your point was so well thought out and intelligently put that I just sat there for a while and thought on it. I didn’t want to just pass by and not say anything. I really hope that progress is steady and that you’ll be treated like what you are, just another person, someone who deserves respect.
You also might ponder doing some writing. You organized your thoughts well and did a far better job of streamlining your situation and position than I. Some people write well naturally and assume it’s not special or very good because it’s not hard, but that is not the case. Just think about it. Best of luck. 🌷

If your parents playing a silly joke on you where they temporarily hid your halloween candy and told you that they ate it has scarred you for life and affected your ability to trust caregivers, then your parents raised a bitch.

I agree. Conan is the best! I have fond memories watching his late show in the 90s with my father and sister during the summer months. To this day I’ve never seen my father laugh at such ridiculous stuff. Conan has a special place in my heart.

After he left and went on XM he was great for a little while, but then just went full bore political. Like an insane level of "everything is someone else's fault" political. He would also constantly push that he was vegan. I loved him on TV for years, but sheesh.

Conan has never not made me laugh from deep in my gut. He brought his experience from SNL to make amazing skits that pushed a lot of boundaries on tv. And his podcast is so damned funny. You can really hear relief from a lot of the guests that they're not in some awkward interview and can really be closer to themselves. The international show was also hilarious. Great video!
