  • I thought I'd have a look at Panic! At The Disco seeing as their new single Viva Las Vengeance seems to be trending on CZcams. I don't know much about this band, and I didn't really pay attention to one of their biggest songs I Write Sins Not Tragedies when it came out. So, in this video I'm going to have a look at both songs and to what's going on and why they're both so popular! What do you think?

Its pretty amazing how Brendon developed his vocal style
His voice changed, but he always sang beautifully and powerfully. Its easy to find amazing vocal parts in every album. How he cares about his voice will give him longevity in the industry (as you can already see with his Broadway stuff)

Bands like Panic! at the Disco were very big when I was a teenager. I was never a huge fan of him then, but as time goes on my appreciation of Brendon's sheer musicianship has really made me grow to love him. I was too preoccupied with irrelevant things like "image" and "genres" and I missed out on some great stuff. I imagine a lot of young folks are in that position. My advice would be to just listen to what you enjoy and leave the rest for the losers to worry about lol

I can't believe no ones pointing this out, panic is NOT Brendon Urie's solo project. The band was founded by Ryan Ross and Spencer Smith, and I only found Brendon when they needed a guitarist because Ryan struggled singing and playing guitar at the same time, but after hearing Brendon's voice they decided to make him the lead singer. Most of the songs on the first 2 albums were written by Ryan and Spencer (including I write sins), but in 2009, Ryan and the bassist left and started a new band called the Young Veins, but they split after 1 album, and after 1 more album with just Brendon and Spencer, Spencer left and since it has pretty much been just Brendon and others have come and gone. The band pre-2009 is a completely different band with completely different song writers to post-2009, only the front man stayed the same and that's seen as enough to be considered the same band for some reason lol

There are so many retro tropes in that new Panic song. The good old chord I - vi and the intro hook remind me of The Ronettes classic “Be my Baby”.

Thanks as always for the great context. Could I ask you with the prettiest of pleases for you to make a video on Courtney Barnett? She is an exquisite lyricist IMO. Her words are simple, yet poetic, and paint a vivid picture that often conveys very complex thoughts and feelings. Not only are her lyrics superb but the music itself is so soulful and beautiful. I'm a music lover but I don't play any instruments and I really understand the machanisms of music. So I really enjoy your take on the artists you review and would love to hear your take on the music of Courtney Barnett.

Wow I loved P!ATD when they were first around. While it’s not my particular taste of music anymore, there really wasn’t anyone else that sounded like them at that time around 05, not that I’d heard anyway. They were also the reason I owned a top hat 😂 Can’t help but sing along to every word even today. Enjoyed your review Justin!

On the subject of censorship; I imagine you have heard the story but I remember listening to radio 2 when permission to land had just hit the charts and they accidentally played ‘Givin’ Up’ instead of ‘I believe In a thing called love’. I was/am a big fan of your work so knew what was coming as soon as the intro came on (a great swap in my opinion, a vastly superior song, sadly under played) Ken Bruce must have gone for a comfort break or something so it played all the way through, I think it was about 5:30 in the afternoon though, so I imagine not all listening would have been as happy as me about the change! The DJ just apologised for playing the wrong song, and moved on. Classic.

A friend and I always talk about how these pop punk bands made their catchiest songs out of effective use of dynamics, like you say about I Write Sins
Fall Out Boy were the masters at it we reckon, there's soft-loud dynamics in pretty much every song

Hey, Justin👋. Brendon goes full on Sinatra/60's lounge lizard in their song "Death of a Bachelor", I think you'd enjoy it. It reminds me of a more earnest version of the neo-50's/60's Swing & Big Band revival of the 90's, but it doesn't feel as tongue-in-cheek as those songs often did...

I was thinking about it yesterday while watching this video that if he were to see DOAB, what would he say!!!! Well he caught in just two songs the change, maturity and versatility of Brendon's voice, something which some haters fail to see, deliberately or not! I wonder if Justin would be surprised to discover this crooner aspect of Brendon's voice!!

Hi Justin..the antics the lead singer engaged in does remind me of Tht Cardiacs..my band supported The Cardiacs many years ago..we were blown away by them...the music was so tight and the stage act was so funny I was crying with laughter as the band opened presents and spontaneously cried as one of the band took a lead solo..such a clever band..oh and they all had pudding bowl wonky haircuts..so pleased they finally got recognised...btw Panic at the dico sound excellent..Great to hear melody again

Love the channel! Off topic of this video, have you listened to anything off the band Silverchair's Young Modern album? They used string arrangement by Van Dyke Parks.
