  • I am genuinely shocked at the state of the live music industry right now. This is exemplified y what just happened this week when Taylor Swift tickets went on sale and due to dynamic pricing tickets went up as high as $22k per ticket. How can this be allowed? Live music is becoming increasingly inaccessible due to what seems like greed. What do you think? Do you think big artists should take a stand against this new system?

It’s not worth anything. Nothing ever gets done to help the consumer. The corporations own our government and institutions thoroughly and entirely now. We are ruled over by corporations. There’s never going to be justice or a government institution that works for the voters ever again. And tbh, there hasn’t been for a long time. This is the corporatocracy we’ve been warned about. Maiden had the best system on the last tour I saw them on. You could buy max four tickets, they go to your phone, and they couldn’t be forwarded to anyone else - something to do with a QR code I believe. You could only sell them back to the ticket company if you couldn’t go. Instantly, you’ve taken touts out of the game. It meant that people who were actually going to go to the gig bothered to buy. The venue was packed, and had a fantastic atmosphere.

Twice this year I have not gone to concerts I really wanted to attend due to pricing. What I find odd (and annoying lol) is that I saw tons of people who were posting photos and videos from the shows with captions like "not really a fan but enjoyed the show, never heard their music but went for the vibes." Concerts have become a status symbol for influencers/aspiring influencers to go and take photos simply so they can say they went. I guess there isn't really anything morally wrong with this and i'm glad musicians are selling tickets but I do wonder how fun a concert is with a bunch of fans vs a bunch of influencers. I'm also obvi jealous people who don't care about the music went and I couldn't afford to lol i'm only human.

    • @Terri_MacKay
      @Terri_MacKay Před rokem +7

It disgusts me that influencers (oh, how I despise that word) and rich slackers with nothing better to do are driving up the cost of tickets, to the point where real fans of bands either can't afford tickets at all, or can only afford nosebleeds up in the rafters where they can't see a damn thing. And you're absolutely right...what makes it so offensive is that they don't give a damn about the band. They've literally stolen the concert from real fans.
I know that the price of everything is going up. And I know that a couple hundred dollars for 1 concert ticket seems absurd, compared to what I used to pay in the 80's and 90's to see the very same bands, but it's a price I'm willing to pay. But any more than that, not a chance. ( One of the reasons that I am willing to pay prices like that is because I have a daughter who's grown up on "my" music, and it means a lot to me to be able to see those bands/ singers with her. It makes it extra special to share that with her. So, yeah, it was worth it to pay about $400 for 2 tickets, so that I could see The Cure, Depeche Mode, Roger Waters, Def Leppard, and Billy Idol with her. Those shows are something neither of us will ever forget.)
What SHOULD a concert ticket cost? For a top band, I'd say between $50 and $250, depending on where the seat is. But then, you have the secondary problem of the vendor adding on astronomical fees that can double or triple the final price. I think that's the problem that has to be addressed, along with dynamic pricing (which I'd never heard of until this video). If the US is allowing TM/LN to have a monopoly on selling concert tickets, then they have to legislate some ceilings on the fees they can charge (for instance, the fees can't exceed a certain percentage of the ticket price), and dynamic pricing has to go. Similarly, there has to be legislation in any country with a ticket resell site. Obviously, people want to make a little money on the tickets they're reselling. But, there's a difference between someone reselling because after buying the tickets, something comes up and they can't go (That's how I got our Depeche Mode tickets...and the guy was only asking $50 more than he had paid for both.), and a**holes who are buying blocks of tickets just so they can sell them for 10X the face value. Again, a law that only allows a resell price that's a certain percentage of the original price??
Back in the 80's and 90's, I went to shows all the time, now, I count myself VERY lucky if I see 1 concert every 18 months. I live near Toronto, so living too far from a venue isn't the problem, and having access to a decent selection of concerts isn't the problem...the only thing stopping me from seeing more shows is the cost of tickets. Nothing else. I know people who go to shows and hockey games all the time (and Maple Leafs tickets are expensive!!), like 10-15 times a year. And they're people with regular jobs, I honestly don't know how they're affording it.

There are some amazing bands on the circuit, working multiple jobs whist having to DIY there own music and struggling to break even. I wish something more could be done about that.

None of these large concerts are worth the money, time, traveling, and all the other related expenses. I used to go to a couple of concerts a month when I was younger, no matter the price. Saw everyone from Paul McCartney and Radiohead to small bands like Glossary or Khruangbin. The small shows are sometimes fun and worth it, but are increasingly becoming too much. But the big acts, the expensive tickets, the decent seats, they’re always a let down. It’s always TOO expensive. The traveling, the hotel, the restaurants, the beer, everything is just for rich people now. You can’t justify going to see your favorite popular artists anymore unless you’re a millionaire. Nowadays if you’re not in the top 1%, if you’re not a trust fund kid, these concerts aren’t for you. And if you DO fork out the money and go, you’re surrounded by people that are nothing like you. The types of people that make you wonder why you’re into a band with so many douchey fans. Everything sucks now bc of huge wealth disparity. And it’s only getting worse.

All seats were ridiculously priced and I keep getting booted out. I bailed on LA and bought tickets in San Jose, which were less expensive for 100 level (floor still outrageous but not as bad as LA). Your criticism of pricing is valid, but your comment of 'a concert about songs of former boyfriend bashing' (I'm assuming you meant that the concert would just be Swift singing songs bashing her ex-boyfriends) is harsh: not only is that comment hugely misogynistic - people *never* say the same about Ed Sheeran, Harry Styles or any other male artist/group whose discography contains songs with similar themes to Taylor Swift's - but it also just isn't true. She has two entire albums on which the majority of songs are non-autobiographical: both of which were nominated for AOTY at the Grammys, which Folklore won. Her music may not be to your taste, but she is an exceptional artist whose art deserves more than being reduced to 'songs about ex-boyfriends'; even if you, personally, don't enjoy her music, that isn't a reason for such a misogynistic take.

Normal people just can't afford that and it's silly money! We're getting the same thing where I live (in Sheffield, UK) and a lot of gig tickets are just too expensive to afford now. For example, the last time Def Leppard played in Sheffield I was working at the venue. I could hear the music from where I was working, so I was happy. They're coming back to Sheffield on their tour next year. I won't be working at the venue this time and I couldn't afford tickets when they went on sale. As for ticket prices I saw one company advertising those HV tickets for about £300. Outrageous. Gladly I got ours for a fair face value price. Hurrah!

It's just sad, here in Florida we have a 4 day event called rockville and a 4 day ticket is around 500, for that 500 you get to see bands like kiss, foo fighters, the struts, metallica, jerry cantrell, and many other legends, to me it feels like these are the bands/artists that care about their fans and want to truely be able to celebrate music with people of all kinds.. to me, someone who would charge this much and this may be unfair to say but to me how can they truely care about their fans? Someone making 10k a year might love and admire and be a true mega fan of a band/artist, but they might be stuck in the nosebleeds because how can they ever afford 22k? It's sad really because music is what unites people of all kinds, sad to see this type of thing really..

I've been to several concerts in the past few months. One bit that bothers me as well is the fact that people will buy tickets to re sell and the failed sales end up as empty seats. I was at a Judas Priest concert and nearly all of the 6th row on stage left was empty. I imagine an artist who feeds off the crowd, that this can also have a negative impact.

I am not from the USA, but if I understand correctly Tickemaster is owned by the same company behind iHeartRadio,Sirius XM, Pandora. Good implied blackmailing sheme there, even if someone wanted to do something.
It is kinda weird seeing her fans say that she is standing up for them with her statement when she basically just blamed the site and said sorry. If she opted for dynamic pricing, that's on her, but since the site has such a monopoly, what could she even do if she wanted to?

I do know Rammstein has got a court order against Stubb Hub to block them from selling Rammstein tix in Europe. Dynamic Ticket pricing is horrible, Ive been a musician and a fan of other musicians my entire life, and I can tell you horror stories from both fans AND artists getting screwed by Live Nation.

It easily allows people buy, resell and scalp their way to glory. Regardless, I am not a Taylor Swift fan… or Harry Styles. I saw you guys, The Darkness, in 2012 in Austin. Fantastic show! Same here! I have a stack of concert tickets since 1979. Many were between $5 and $9 back in the day. We pouted when at last after waiting all morning, we finally got to the Ticketmaster window at Sears and they wanted $12 service fees. Those bastards! We went to probably one or two big concerts per week sometimes. There are a few acts I'd be happy to see again, but not for these prices. If I never go to another one again I'm OK. I've seen who I wanted to in the last 42 years. I'm good.

Holy shit I'm so glad we had big day out back in the day.And it's why Festival life is the best. That was such a great concept, One price to see the best bands in the world playing full sets and getting exposure to music you may never see.For instance one year the line up included Metallica, Coldplay Rammstein ,Blink 182, Limp bizkit etc $120 NZ in 1 day. Fast forward to 2022 just imagine if you were fleeced at that Morrissey concert where he got a bit cold and killed it after HALF A FUCKIN HOUR moses's sandles that would suck. I would love to know how much it costs for a big concert tour to be put on and what their profit margins are.

I think bands should go back to the concept of making money because they are talented and can really perform and bedazzle a crowd. I've been to lots of shows where I had a better time because it was a smaller crowd therefore more intimate and just a better time; because they were talented artists that didn't need a big live production to entertain you.

Its just scandalous, especially when you have kids that want to see popular artists, you don't want to disappoint them with back row seats, and these agencies and middle men are just coining it in. I've done it though, meeting someone at the venue with your tickets (and the whole time you're driving there thinking - are they really going to be there, or did I just ripped off). I remember queuing for 2.5hrs at Wembley Stadium box office for Madonna's 'Who's that Girl' tour. Not exactly convenient - but at least I didn't get ripped off.

There's a lot of brilliant talented bands around (and visiting) London nowadays and I am loving it.

I’m glad to hear Ireland is capping what Ticketmaster can charge for tickets. There’s nothing even remotely ethical about Live Nation and their processes so I think it’s pertinent for regulatory entities to check them. On another note, I was checking just yesterday to see if T Swift was coming to Ireland (for a friend of course 😉) and I did not see any dates booked. She only does weekend shows from what I’ve heard and I believe her tour is during the GAA season so the one venue in Ireland big enough for her draw may not be available. I know a couple young ladies devastated by this. However I’ve not done extensive research on the matter so don’t quote me, do your own. Cheers

The surrounding machine and sell-on industry are of course to blame, but the big artists really could/should do more... They're the one's with the clout to create pressure and take ticket-master, stubb-hub etc. to task, but for decades now they haven't.
It's not like they're not prepared to take a stand when they feel they're being taken advantage or threatened in some way....
      e.g.
      Metallica/Napster
      Prince becoming Symbol,
      George Michael/Sony,
U2 v anyone that ever remotely threatened their sizeable piece of the pie.
