He would never do stupid shit like taking his own life or even put himself in the firing line. He prefers to do it from the background by pulling the strings. The writers just went for cheap thrills by copying Joker instead of sticking to the original material.

Good summary of Sherlock fans, going as far back as the original Sherlock Holmes's death, more or less. There always has to be a trick, even when the lack of tricks is what made this season so clever to begin with.

Why do I feel like every time Moriarty says he's disappointed in Sherlock with this 'knowing' expression, Sherlock looks like a kicked puppy, before trying to prove himself, and show that he's not stupid.
It's almost like Sherlock isn't use to being told that he disappointed someone by getting something wrong, since he's so used to being right.

I like how they had Moriarty crushed the whole fake "key program" thing. It's a sign that writers are finally writing technology and specifically, hacking, to be realistic instead of a cliched superweapon to fill in script gaps.

Society isn't meant for smart people, it's all about stability, consistency, _boredom_ and the constant struggle against change. Sure, they'll take a solution to a perceived problem but only so long as the understanding fits into their tiny brains. Mycroft and Sherlock take the approach that's socially acceptable (barely) with "get out of my way and consider it fixed" but without a social outlet, Moriarty is left with nothing to do but shake the tree and watch things fall.
If I didn't have my software writing outlet, I'm pretty sure the wrong side of the law would be the only outlet open for real creativity. And, yes, what to do when you reach the top is a problem - it's just the same up there as it was down here.

Sarcastic Potato but moriarty shot himself IN FRONT of Sherlock, so he would have known if the death was faked or not. The only way moriarty would still be alive is if that wasn't the real moriarty, and that guy definitely seemed way too smart to not be the real one. More than likely, moriarty just left a few ties and plans behind for Sherlock to deal with after his death
I love how perfectly the song played at the beginning - while also serving to state Moriartys point/motivation - screams into the viewers face what is going to happen next. Staying alive - for Sherlock, and if they bring back Moriarty in Season 4, for him as well. That's just such a nice mind game to play with the viewers.

+Chiko was here That's a very good point, I suppose it is entirely plausible. But this is a sherlock that came out of a deeply draining process in finding out the truth, there is no way he would come out of that place and be making funny quips. But again, anything is possible.

"Just tryna have some fun. " and "Ooh well." are my favorite parts of this scene because of the way he says it, not kidding.
Andrew Scott is such an amazing actor. Takes my breath away every time.
Things to think about:
1. Moffat said that we missed a clue, something 'out of character' that Sherlock did. In the very first episode Sherlock already states that he "prefers to text", and throughout the show we never saw him comunicating on the phone instead of texting. Why would he CALL John before he jumps. That's something 'out of character'.
2. If you check all the scenes that Moriaty and Sherlock do the 'key' with their fingers is always the same patern, except for this scene, he does a different thing with his fingers. My theory is that Richard Brook was on the roof and Sherlock knew, so he did a different patern with his fingers and the actor didn't notice, so he just assumed it was the key and continued his 'scene', Sherlock then smiles because he knows it's not Moriaty, otherwise he would've noticed the wrong patern. Richard Brook killed himself on the roof.
Those are just my theories on how Sherlock ACTUALLY faked his death and how is Moriaty still alive. Tell me if I nailed it or failed it.

I wonder why did he act as if he is actually considering suicide in front of the notMoriarty...somehow everything that happened on the roof was like a scene from a play in which nobody knows who is who. Oh well, we will understand(i hope)after 2 days.
***** The thing is that a lot of pieces are missing in this puzzle. I mean they don't even cleared how Sherlock actually faked his death.He said that he predicted several outcomes of the roof meeting.Sherlock must of figured that Moriarty will force him to commit suicide,using his only weakness - his friends.So in every possible outcome he should die.But how he was planning to force Moriarty to call off the assassins ? If the only way to do it was simply he jumping of the roof, why didn't he do it in the first place ?!(damn, it is Death note all over again) Also nobody knows where he has been in the 2 years since he was missing. Does he knew that Moriarty is alive even then ? Did they meet again at some point ?! I think they probably did at some point.

The way I pictured it, should moriarty come back, the scene should be:
- camera shooting the side face of sherlock
- suddenly staying alive is playing
- sherlock has stunned look to his face
- sherlock turning his head slowly behind
- camera change to in front of sherlock
- camera turning slowly until we can see what's in the back of sherlock
- we see moriarty standing(staying alive still playing)
Edit: I think this scene should be at the very end before closing credit, so that staying alive is playing full throughout the closing credit.(Now that I think about it, it should be at the end of season, so that the cliffhanger is real :D)

"You look but you do not see." There's no spurt of blood when Moriarty "shoots" himself. There's no visible entry wound or exit wound. If you apply real physics to it, the whole back of Moriarty's head should have blown off. The blood seen moments later coming from Moriarty's "corpse" could easily be achieved by a blood pack set off just behind Moriarty's neck, hidden under his clothes. Conclusion: Moriarty simulated the gun shot, played dead. Sherlock went along with it because he needed Moriarty to believe he'd won in order for Sherlock to fake his own suicide and then enable him to dismantle Moriarty's entire operation.

I think Moriarty is a step ahead of Sherlock. Moriarty is as smart (if not smarter) as Sherlock. Of course he knew that Sherlock wasn't really going to kill himself. Instead of Sherlock's death, he made Sherlock believe that he's the one who's dead.
Nah Sherlock outclassed him, Morairty may be smart but he is also insane, Sherlock is less insane and thats why he lived (and also outsmarted him by staing alive literally)
