      I am more of a fan of Benedict tbh. RDJ is an incredibly famous actor for good reasons, but I feel like he is too cool for the role. The Sherlock he portraits is nowhere near as flawed and asocial as Benedict’s is. I just think that this is a thing the series did better, because not only gave it room for comedy, but also to grow as a character. This Sherlock doesn’t just look like Tony Stark, he acts the same way too. I find the other way a whole lot more interesting and I don’t think RDJ could’ve done that as well as Benny.

    Looking through the comments, I think a lot of people are confused as to why Sherlock would continue to sacrifice himself when he saw Watson enter the room. The answer is simple: it's too risky. Moriarty is just too good of a planner. He is shown to have contingencies for contingencies throughout the movie. He likely even has contingencies for even when people walk into his room - like Watson. Holmes CORRECTLY DEDUCES that sacrificing himself is the ONLY thing that he didn't foresee because his sociopath nature cannot comprehend sacrifice. Thus, Holmes made the ONLY decision that would ensure victory. Also keep in mind that if Moriarty isn't dead by the end of the scene, then Dr. Watson and his wife will be in serious danger for the rest of their lives.

      But he shouldn't have any trouble comprehending spite. Even a sociopath could easily haven chosen what Holmes did here, simply by reasoning that death was inevitable regardless of what he did and therefore deciding, "If I'm going to die anyway, then I'm taking you with me because fuck you."

    • @cj131
      @cj131 Před 3 lety +18

      That's exactly what I was thinking! Furthermore, Moriarty is a very powerful man and if Watson and Sherlock were to fight Moriarty together, Moriarty would still win because of his powerful access to the government. We already know that Moriarty is a personal friend of the Prime Minister and Mycroft Holmes also said that he has positioned himself very intellectually. In any case, Moriarty would still win. So it was right of Sherlock Holmes to sacrifice himself.

He wasn't going to let Holmes just walk away. He even said that he would kill Watson after he was done with him. Holmes asking Moriarty to light his pipe was all part of the gentleman's game they were playing as a sort of foreplay before they fought to the death. They even played a full game of chess. But no, it wasn't planned. The only thing that Holmes could do to win was to sacrifice himself because Moriarty showed that no matter what Holmes thought about that he had a way of beating him here. Even if Waston would have come out mid fight, Moriarty would have manipulated th government into his release, upon which, Holmes and Watson would have been hunted down anyway. The ONE thing that a person as self-absorbed as Moriarty wouldn't expect is self-sacrifice, so Holmes changed up his strategy. Hence the words, "Unless" at the end.

While the former motive seems much more interesting than the latter, it takes from the character his calm n class thing and replace it with this sassy n humourous behaviour. So it's quite hard to choose 1 between the 2 since the bbc's moriarty is illustrated as almost completely the opposite of conan's doyle character.

    It’s a brilliant movie, if you know this movie well. You will see that in one of the first scenes, Holmes actually predicts that he will give his life to stop moriaty, he also predicts a few more, (I’m aware he doesn’t die here) but he predicts many small outcomes, he is very far ahead of anyone else.
    But what is interesting in this scene, is the conversation between Holmes, and Watson, even tho no words are spoken between them in this scene. If you take into account, the mental conversation Holmes and moriaty had about their fight, whilst moriaty lights Holmes pipe, that fight scene is all in the minds of both men and happens in 1 second of real time.
    Now, look for the moment Holmes, but’s moriaty into the head lock, sees Watson, then closes his eyes,( slowly) then the camera moves to Watson, where he does the same. In this brief moment, is all the things that you would say to a friend, when you thought you were seeing them for the last time. I wonder what Holmes said to Watson, in the time it took to close his eyes, and what Watson replies, in the time it took to close his own.
    Brilliant writing.

    In the chess game they’re playing before the fight, Sherlock wins by letting Moriarty take his Queen to secure a victory. He does the same thing here, making the sacrifice play of giving up the most valuable piece (himself) to secure his victory.
    Similarly earlier on he only obtained the notebook by allowing Moriarty to hang him from a meat hook - a sacrifice of his own body, for an opportunity to win.
    Sherlock’s willingness to make sacrifice himself, rather than sacrifice other people, is why he won and Moriarty lost.

If Watson had entered then, Holmes could've been distracted enough to be pushed off the edge even quicker. If that had happened, Watson may have been distraught enough to either try and fail at killing Moriarti, or be so focused on Holmes that Moriarti just slips out around him. Then by the time that Holmes reappears at Watson's home, Watson may have already been killed by Moriarti/goons.

And that's why I left "turn the tide" somewhat neutral; Holmes might have used Watson to his advantage, Moriarty might have used Watson to his advantage - But! Neither of them even considered it! That's the notable thing for me. It's also interesting because the rest of that scene is all about Holmes trusting Watson to be his agent in the ballroom - "I may be absent from the room, but my methods are not." And then Holmes lays out how Moriarty has lost because he's been on to him, and Moriarty's play of occupying Holmes to prevent him from catching the killer will fail because Holmes has Watson in his place.
      All of this baiting Moriarty into a fight. I wonder if it wouldn't have been more rewarding for MORIARTY to have initiated the fight-analysis scene and then for Holmes to jump in with something like, "Ah, finally a fellow player." Then it could be Moriarty - instead of Holmes - describing Holmes' strength wearing thin, his injury making defense untenable. They could get to the point where Moriarty is hoisting Holmes off the banister, saying, "Let's not waste any more of each other's time." And just as Holmes is falling, he says something like, "I'm not wasting time, I'm buying it," and then the analysis scene is abruptly interrupted by a gunshot and a spray of blood from Moriarty's head. We cut to Watson in the door, holding the pistol Moriarty's assassin had, and he rushes over the banister, watching Holmes fall to his - presumed - death.
      But, maybe not. The scene works pretty well as-is, and accomplishes all it needs to.

      @n0wheregrrl Před 3 lety +5

      @@mikepastor.k6233 I think telling him was actually part of Holmes's plan to trap Moriarty and kill him. As we know, Holmes actually survived via breathing apparatus, which means he likely went into the game planning to drag Moriarty over the railing with him. If I recall correctly, he chose their meeting place, too ... conveniently, one where he could drag Moriarty over the railing with him.
      So why reveal to Moriarty how thoroughly he ruined him financially? And why go even further by mocking him with painstakingly drawn flip-book art? Isn't that a lot of work to put into just rubbing his nose in it? Is that the sort of thing Holmes normally spends his time on?
      Well, here's my answer: remember their first meeting, where Holmes analyzes Moriarty's handwriting? It's the one moment in their interaction where Holmes actually seems to get to Moriarty. I think it's an early hint that Holmes is able to "read" Moriarty psychologically.
      So to return to the scenario here, we have:
      1. Holmes meeting Moriarty at a location where he could be dragged over a railing to his death.
      2. Holmes has a breathing apparatus.
      3. Holmes takes the time to explain exactly how badly he fucked Moriarty.
      4. Holmes tops it off by having made flip-art mocking Moriarty.
      My conclusion:
      We must remember that Moriarty had Holmes's ability to analyze an encounter in-depth. Had he been thinking clearly (i.e., not enraged), he might have also seen one layer deeper and anticipated Holmes's real plan to kill him. However, he wasn't, and he didn't. Why not?
      It's because Holmes deliberately pissed Moriarty the fuck off. He did it because angry people don't think as clearly, and he read Moriarty psychologically well enough to realize he was vulnerable to this sort of manipulation. Holmes, who had lured Moriarty to this spot with his breathing apparatus ready to go, needed Moriarty's keen analytical mind operating at less than peak capacity, as it was essential that he didn't catch on to the fact he was walking into a trap.
      What it comes down to is this wasn't a spontaneous act or a sacrifice play. It was a very intricate game of chess, as intricate as the one they were playing on the board. Holmes simply played it a little bit better than Moriarty did.

      Moriarty is a very powerful man and if Watson and Sherlock were to fight Moriarty together, Moriarty would still win because of his powerful access to the government. We already know that Moriarty is a personal friend of the Prime Minister and Mycroft Holmes also said that he has positioned himself very intellectually. In any case, Moriarty would still win. So it was right of Sherlock Holmes to sacrifice himself.

      @@cj131 Well we don't know if Moriarty contingencies will match Sherlock's methods. What we do know is Moriarty still had his "bishop" available on the board, so getting into a fight with him would be very risky. An injured Holmes with white bishop will likely lose against an uninjured Moriarty with black bishop.

    Two monsters battling each other the only thing that separated them made the difference & that was Watson “The uncontrollable factor” in this situation his friendship with Sherlock made the difference!
    It also begs the question if moriarty had a bond with someone would he have factored in self sacrifice as a final move, because ultimately Sherlock & moriarty are 2 sides of the same coin
