The young Americans fighting to ban abortion

  • Since the US supreme court's overturning of Roe v Wade, 16 states have enacted stringent bans on nearly all abortions. But that is not enough for a new generation of organised and passionate activists intent on pushing even stricter laws across the country. Carter Sherman spends time with students and organisers at the annual March for Life in Washington DC and meets the influential woman spearheading the national movement

I'm Christian and I disagree with that whole thing they said. Christian laws are already in place. We don't need laws saying "you can't divorce" "your head isn't covered" "watching corn? Jail" "unmarried and pregnant? We'll take the child" which that last part DID happen a lot. Many of our grandparents or great grandparents were adopted out and have NO idea where to find their biology family because there was no record or it was sealed and they can't get it.

The states that have no abortion laws do have clauses that say it’s ok in situations of rape, incest, and threat to the mother’s life. It’s never as bad as you think. People just don’t want others to be irresponsible with procreation. I kind of a serious thing too many take it so lightly.

It's kind of terrifying when faced with the realities of the situation their response is, "just pray about it." If the mother and/or fetus ends up passing away, then it was a god's plan for that to happen. If the fetus manages to live but has life long complications, it was god's plan for that to happen. I've always gotten the feeling that pro-lifers think that women are just thrilled to get an abortion, “Yes, an unplanned pregnancy! Can't wait to for my abortion.”
Pro-lifers are so obsessed with the fetus/embryo, that they- perhaps willingly- forget that there's a woman at the centre of this. A woman with responsibilities, dignity, and humanity.

@@samstromberg5593 Correct, but the medical term for a miscarriage that happens before 20 weeks is called a "spontaneous abortion". The developing fetus just stops growing on it's own.
So some pro-abortion advocates try to scare people by saying that if a prolife advocate wants to end abortions, then they're also going to throw a woman in jail if she has a miscarriage, because a miscarriage is also technically an abortion, in the medical sense. Just not an abortion is the sense that people mean when they say abortion.

That also changed in the last few years, and actually changed after my opinion changed on abortion. I was also a socialist for some years in young adulthood, and then was a somewhat left-leaning libertarian for almost a decade, followed by a short stint as a more right-leaning libertarian before becoming an Orthodox Christian and being disillusioned with politics in general. I don't think that there's necessarily an outside force that can "cause it to happen." It's much more internal than that. I think almost everyone is driven by feeling rather than by accepting solid arguments, and that really even goes for a lot of people who think they hold their beliefs because they've accepted what they think are solid arguments, but are rather arguments that rely on faulty premises that they grant due to some gut feeling they have on that premise.

My view changed when I found out a close friend of mine was born of r*pe. How on earth can I be okay with the idea that she didn't have the right to exist just because of the circumstances of her conception? How can I say her life was worth less than mine? For any reason too. Born into a poorer family. That's not the end of the world. People have overcome much more with way less. The world is scary too. But it can be a beautiful place as well. For every abortion they stop they should be made to adopt or pay to care for that child OR pay because that woman is suffering bad mental health or is unalive do to her legally not being able to get one and then was bleeding out ( for example)❗
Also all these peopeo are of one shade of people and could be very well off. ❗
I promise you. No amount of government support is gonna give a kid a father or their mother back. Kids are not always a blessing in some situations. They could be born very sick and suffer.
A woman said she would not abort a couple's child as a surrogate because she vould feel them kick. She even asked for more money when they offered to pay 5k-10k. She left the state. Gave birth. Dumped the poor kid with someone who was blind, deaf, couldnt speak, smile, or react to any stimulus. They child lived until 8. Literally a vegetable.

It’s not so baffling if you look at it from their perspective: if pro-life people are right about what abortion is (the unjust killing of a living human who deserves human rights), then it makes sense that they would fight so hard against it.
If you thought people were killing tiny humans, even if you weren’t a parent, you would want to go stop those people too.

When there are some situations where there is a 0% chance of the babies survival and all it is doing is threatening the mother’s life, and the mother can’t legally get an abortion. That is no longer pro-life. All that is doing is making the death of the mother more likely.

As a prolife medical student, that is not the prolife position of the people that are closely involved with trying to create policies, recommendations, and procedures for medical practitioners. Just like with any hot button political issue, there are people on both sides that have not thought about these ideas well enough or solutions to resolving various edge cases. I'm curious what you mean by 0% chance of the baby's survival. Do you mean they only live for 5 years after birth? 2 years? 4 months? Do you mean there is no longer any growth of the child in the fetal state? Do you mean in the case of an ectopic pregnancy? At what point in the pregnancy? Past the point of viability? These are all different indications that one should consider. At the heart of it, the point is to try not to harm the child. If the child still doesn't make it while trying to care for the mother, then it's a tragedy, but it's acceptable. It's all about your intentions.

Many countries having poorer conditions than the states don't allow abortion. Because they value life and not promiscuity.
