  • TechNewOld: quick look at the Sega Mega Drive bundle with Sega CD and Sega x32. Is it still worth playing in 2020?
Not my best video, poor audio. Filmed on an iPhone 5se.
This is from my personal retro collection. I really like the mark 1 complete sprawling Sega set up, called by aficionados "The Sega Power Tower", and I think nobody has attempted such audacious and flawed hardware upgrades as Sega did back in the 80/90s. They just kept adding hardware to the core 16bit console, squeezing everything out of the system.
It really feels retro, and if you are after that experience you will not be disappointed.
The cartridge games and CDs are durable and good to collect. They are going up in value in particular the Sega CDs as a full collection is achievable: a total of 211 titles are listed. 57 were released only in Japan, 39 were released only in North America, and 5 were released only in Europe.

Does it stand up today in 2020? Well games have moved on a lot. I will say that the core 16bit Sega Mega Drive does still have some very playable games. The Sega CD and Mega x32 were lofty in their goals but the gaming experience is not as playable as the simpler 16 bit catridges. However, I must stress the Sega CDs are very collectable and they do feel special from a bygone technology era! If you are a purist, having the x32 plugged into your Sega Mega Drive I think gives slightly better video output.
