@@cornblaster7003 i think that's what keeps people away from enabling piracy with their homebrew for as long as they can. The Wii is still a really good example of this, with mod packs like CTGP requiring a physical disc to load, and refusing to run if on an emulator or without a valid disc.

I actually have a hacked 2ds, and i remember specifically having to go through some wierd hoops IN the 3ds, and therefore ds. I remember going through the japanese version of flipnote studio, but I had no idea what to do because I don't speak Japanese. I was insanely scared, but luckily I ended up using Google translate to find all the Japanese characters I needed. So I needed GOOGLE TRANSLATE to hack my 2ds. Weirdest thing I've probably ever done.
I remember using that when I was hacking my 3ds, but the guide explained it all
That's what I had to do for mine. I believe that is the frogminer method. The current method is bannerbomb3 which is way less sketch and hard to mess up
I hacked mine 2 days ago, for mine I only needed a couple files and a SD card, incredible how much it improved in just a few years

bught an r4 on dsi miself but never used it for piracy, homebrew was where it's at! (well i suppose technically i pirated pokemon diamond cuz i wanted to try a gamebreaking glitch without damaging my cartridge too)
So what you're telling me is...
The 3DS was susceptible to a simple buffer overflow attack... TWICE.
It also suffered from a nice memory protection flaw, gspwn. Nintendo knew well enough to keep the important OS code in its own protected memory region where games couldn't touch it. But, the GPU could. By convincing it to "draw" over certain memory, you could access those protected areas.
but first you need to get access to the GPU
So was the Wii. The Twilight Princess hack was a buffer overflow with the horse's name, and it was the same with the Lego Indiana Jones Adventure. I cant remember what the specific buffer overflow as on that one though.
@poopity scoop the security was good enough, it held for a couple of years, and the flaws were patched somewhat quickly, their job isn't to make it unhackable, it's to make it hold long enough that they can sell games on it and the publishers make games on the console.
most hacks look quite simple once you know them, but it's like finding a password is *Po123ny456*, once you know it, it's easy to login, but if you have to guess it's really hard.

A group of hackers being against piracy, now thats something you rarely see.
Got here from the 3DS hacks subreddit. Not done watching yet, just wanted to say, some of this sounds eerily similar to a certain situation. Piracy being the main motive for a certain device, the intentional bricking of consoles using said device...
*cough* SX OS *cough*
And for a good reason: TX team and gateway are literally the same thing! And there is a lot of evidence online about that...
I almost stole your comment lol, then I read this aaand... Deleted.
@@matteofo I wonder why your name isn't 5914773R.
Leaffen 🤷🏻♂️
There's a reason ReSwitched team refers to TX as "Gateway"... That said, SX and Gateway share a lot of common features, design practices, etc.
One of the biggest ironies of the whole cracking 3DS firmware and Nintendo desperately trying to patch it with every iteration of their own firmware... Homebrew Launcher did not, in of itself, allow piracy. It enabled it, sure, but it also came with a bunch of cool features like customization options. Actually being able to change your 'wallpaper' background of your 3DS system, and alter the background music of the homescreen to anything.
Nintendo, for whatever reason and even to this day, does not support minimal customization of your device. You can't put an image file on your SD card and use that as your background. You either choose their default colors or nothing at all. You can't even buy 'themes' as you can with your PS4 for example.
They are VERY stubborn, and even that might be an understatement. That is but one example. Instead of adopting the more 'freeing,' user friendly and relatively harmless features/benefits of custom firmware... They chose to crack down on custom firmwares/exploits to install custom firmware without providing an alternative or an incentive NOT to jailbreak your 3DS. So can they really be surprised that hackers were relentless?
And if you look at the PC as a platform... Nobody cares that you 'save edit' or use cheats in a single player game. And that has birthed amazing modding communities for all sorts of games, developers even embrace it and offer out opensource 'mod kits' to modders so that they can DESIGN content for their games that other players can use as they see fit. Just look at Skyrim or any Bethesda game for that matter. We've all probably played Skyrim with mods. You could make the argument that such games and the experience are improved by mods. Even Valve has Steam workshop and practically encourages players TO download mods for applicable games.
Imagine Breath of the Wild with community created mods. A mod that removes the durability system so that players who dislike that can experience the game the way they want, if they so chose. Whole new areas, towns, weapons, armor, quests. Replacing Link's character model with Zelda. Right now that's impossible because not only does Nintendo not support it, but with every Switch game, your save file is saved to the device and linked to your account on it. You know what allows you to save on your SD card, inject different save files and harmlessly 'cheat' or 'soft mod' games? Custom firmware. Yet another incentive for hackers to use custom firmware and continue to find exploits, while Nintendo continues to be stubborn for no reason. It's an incentive that wouldn't EXIST if Nintendo offered support for things like that.
I can understand wanting to crackdown on piracy. What I can't understand is why, as a platform creator, you would not want to make piracy the ONLY reason for hackers to exploit and install a custom firmware. You don't have to like people modding, save editing, using their own backgrounds/homescreen music etc. You DO, however, have to wise up and understand that the more concessions you make (the less incentives you give hackers to hack your own platform), then the less incentives those hacking communities will have to do it in the first place.
More features, less hackers. Less hackers, more secure platform. More secure platform, less piracy. It's quite that simple.
the 3DS does have themes, but all of 'em are just first party, with rarely any 3rd parties.
Shhhhh, you know how stubborn Nintendo is. You're totally right but we have to make them think that all of this was their idea.
Seriously, the reason people waited so long to hack the PS3 was because of Linux. It only really ramped up when OtherOS was removed. Coincidence? I think not.
I dont find it ironic at all, their entire security was console based at the time. Piracy was literally just one homebrew app away and for years their entire eshop became "freeshop", including multiplayer until they finally managed to ban people for it. To design it like that was on them but I dont remember any console which made piracy so convenient once cracked.
3DS does have purchasable themes though
Piracy, shitty.
I love this video! So neat to know how one of my most nostalgic handhelds was cracked back in it’s rise!
I think I've genuinely rewatched this video like 20 times.
It's so good.

That's a damn irony!
*Ahem* sx os
@@TexelGuy Apparently the SX OS and the Gateway team are the same.
@@essasetic6064 well, I mean they haven't bricked any consoles yet, and removed the brick code, so maybe they've changed or maybe they just don't want the team xecuter name to be associated with gateway.
@@TexelGuy Well they managed to brick Hexkyz's console while he was tampering around with it. Good job the code wasn't as spaghetti as Gateways otherwise it would be *BAD*. It wipes literal NAND partitions and you need a backup just to restore it. But apparently it can happen to normal users but the brick code was removed so that isn't possible anymore.
As you can probably tell I don't like TX or SX OS very much (although I used it up to 2.0).
EA: Literally the only thing they're good for is making sudoku games that let you hack your 3ds.
Along with the DSi!
And Mysims Agents.
also for publishing 007 agent under fire to mess with 6th gen home consoles especially the ps2
@@squiddljonn619 It's not actually illegal. Unless you're in japan. Then it's illegal. We have Shiggy (Shigyro Myamoto) to thank for that.
@@squiddljonn619 I fail to see why. Homebrewing systems gives a greater degree of control. It allows people to bypass region lock, import custom themes, get unlimited save files, and do a whole host of things that you could not do before. I'm not sure if you're getting homebrewing confused with piracy, but if that's the case, know that they are two separate things.
"Needless to say, they did NOT want anyone figuring out how it worked...
So lets talk a little about how it worked."

I come back to this video all the time. we miss you Tech Rules
This is a good video. thanks CZcams algorithm
What I'm confused about is how CZcams's algorithm's suggested this video to everybody when this channel has a total of 2 video's? how is there enough data from 2 video's to start suggesting this video to over 1000000 people?
@@razzamatty CZcams wildin
@@razzamatty I'm thinking this guy has other videos in another account from wich he gained experience, and somehow Google knew he was making quality content with them, so it gave him a bump.
That sounded less crazy in my head.
Even CZcams doesn't know what the algorithm is doing anymore.
But it's definitely learning, which is the real thing to be concerned about.
Dunno...I'm not so surprised, I'm studying game design and watch lots of videos related to this topic.
You have a great style of commentary, casual and friendly without coming across as trying too hard x
Wish I could speak like that during presentations
@@iwilitu6591 Just make all your presentations _exclusively_ about the history of 3DS hacking!
Its almost been 2 years since this gem of a channel started and he hasnt changed much and still just as fun to watch
I think it's funny how many hackers are against piracy when that's what 90% of people use it for. I doubt anyone ever hacked their console just to play homebrew and Doom ports
That's the problem, really. INB4 this turns into 10¹⁰⁰ pixels high of drama.
They are covering their asses. Most either really don't care or support it
There's an annoyingly vocal minority who genuinely do. Retrogame emulation is particularly desired.

this led me down the rabbit hole to modding my 3ds
Seeing this video makes me really appreciate all the work the homebrew community has done on making the 3ds so smooth to hack. We now can hack a 3ds easily without a game at all!
Also I like how you immediately explained how the gateway carts worked after saying that gateway didn't want people to know how their carts worked!
Hey, everyone! Thank you so much for the overwhelming support on this video! It was a long time in the making, and I'm really happy it seems to be so well-received.
Everyone's been asking for MONTHS about the music at the start of the video. It's called "Root" by Silent Partner. Sorry for not mentioning before. For some reason, I didn't realize so many people would want to know!
Also, a slight correction: I've been told that I got the colors of the Sky3DS buttons wrong, and it was the blue one that had the arbitrary limit. My bad!
Anyway, thanks again! I hope I can continue to make interesting content that all of you enjoy!
i remember when cubic ninja was starting to be used for homebrew. Scalpers were everywere lol great video btw. keep it up fam
m8 this video is awesome I just discovered it
Please make more videos this is epic I've subed please I knnow it takes time to research but I just like the tone of your voice any topic is fine but I recommend with this being your first video and all, sticking to the genre of video games
This video really takes me back, I actually still own a Gateway (both carts) and the original box!
I'm sure you mentioned it in the video (still watching) but the Gateway team stopped all support 2 years ago it seemed, 2017 was their last post on the site.
I've (in the past, videos now removed) reviewed some of those "clones" such as the Sky3DS, QQ3DS, etc. Anyways keep up the good videos my friend :)
If you need any help with the videos just ask, I'd love to help with topics like this if you're interested & I'm able to help in any way.
Edit: Only 1 mistake in the video I personally noticed, the (blue) Sky3DS is the old model and the (orange) button is the new one however they got mixed up in the video.
I don't mind if the videos are 10, 5, or even 3 minutes, if it is well done and you put effort in it, I will still watch it. :)
the second i saw cubic ninja i was glad my parents bought it for me. they only got it because they saw it was really popular and bought it. even if it was badly received, i had so much fun with it. nostalgia kicking in harder than a brick.
a brick()?
Aww that's cute
I always see these hacking history things and they're so cool and interesting but I can't help but always feel like it's just SO MUCH WORK 🤣 but it's always cool to see how passionate groups of people are to succeed with a particular such as hacking a 3ds
Remember it's always morally correct to pirate Nintendo games.
Release your games Nintendo.
No one can be expected to have a CRT TV that can play SNES or N64 properly anymore.
Great video.
Would be cool to listen about hacking history of others consoles.
Like PSP for example.
That and the ps vita :D
PSP hacking age was golden, probably because it was PSP. Never heard about PS Vita hacking scene though, so that would the thing I'd like to see a video about.

Guess a new legendary CZcamsr is appearing. Since I like these types of videos, I will support them.
It has been in mine for the past two or three days, so I finally gave in and clicked on it.
It was better than I expected, actually.
This was a very interesting documentary. I actually managed to get a copy of Cubic Ninja in the mail recently. Not sure if Ninjax still works but I definitely want to look into it (once i get an old refurbished 3ds that i don't mind the risk of accidentally breaking).

This is so wholesome.
I relate with my entire being to this comment.
@Jaden Velez From what I understand, hackers just enjoy the challenge, not always worried about the outcome or how others will us it. Some don't care about piracy even, they just care about finding out how to get in or get something to work. Honestly no different than any other creation hobby, like making a table, you don't know how someone will use it, you're just proud to of made it.
I love the big old W that stands out in Gateway's logo.
'Cause they're as money hungry as Wario.

I owned this game before the discovery.
And genuinely enjoyed it.

Damn, I should have bought the console and then that game and sold it for higher price to get a nice profit. I would maybe launch a little buisness then lmao
I still have it. I havent finished. I need to.
It was my 2nd 3DS game. Ahh nostalgia.
