    Use the drywall, smooth it out with joint compound and paint the inside area around fireplace insert and inside sides of mantle with flat black fireproof paint and the area will disappear and look like a real fireplace.🙂 The mantle is gorgeous.

    Absolutely use the darker gray for the bead board walls but do the shelving in your wooden concoction so that it carries that detail onto the wall. The cabinets could still be in the gray as well with perhaps the top in the wooden color. The brick for the hearth is a PERFECT idea and an amazing way to use up the old chimney bits. If you were able to find thinner brick, like tile depth, that could go up along the inside of the mantel. Or if you have extra of the one you intend to use on the kitchen wall/primary bathroom cause it has that texture to compliment. I'm so excited to see the progress in the living room!!

  • @afterglowisle
    @afterglowisle Před rokem +124

    Okay, how about this. The millstone grey in the back of the bead board, cabinets and shelves the dark rich wood color you have in the kitchen pocket window. That way it will match the trim of the three windows in the living room. So you get some cohesiveness from both spaces. Just a thought 😊 also, the mantle looks stunning! Can’t wait to see how the brick turns out for the hearth, adding that detail back into the space is the best idea!

    I LOVE the millstone gray for the walls beside the fireplace. I also think it would be really cool to take one of the stamped bricks and use it on the corner of the hearth, just so you can see the history of the home. It adds some character instead of using only the flat bricks, but using more than one stamped brick would make it look too busy and random imo.

    I'm a little nervous the tv will be way too high up, but I trust your vision! I'm also worried that having the same dark color on both the cabinets and the beadboard will hide the beadboard, which would be too bad after making the effort to save it - but i do like the dark color, and maybe it will have the opposite effect, highlighting the beadboard :-)

    I was always taught that the best type of paint for brick and plaster is something breathable like mineral based paint. Otherwise, moisture will get trapped beneath the paint and cause the bricks to crumble and deteriorate over time. But I'm not sure if that's an issue for interior bricks.

  • @uncagedhawk

    Love the progress. I would match the mantle to the base color of whatever mottled color you do the lime wash in with glazing to bring those features out. The light color looks really nice against the dark paint swatch, but you’d probably lose those details if you paint it to match the shelves. Love the brick fireplace idea, especially since it’s salvaged materials and adds the home’s history back into the hearth. Compared to the cabinets this room looks like it will go quickly. Can’t wait to see what you do with it.

    I like the idea of having the two bookcases, including shelves, painted in the darker colour. This would look amazing with pops of colour from your little antique finds and books etc. The fireplace looks as though it’s always been there but, in my mind, I think a large, oversized slab of living edge timber from your local area would look so stunning. You could still incorporate the bricks by using them to lay the wood slab on top of.

    @katiebrown7617 Před rokem +1

    Yes!!! Definitely use the salvaged brick for the hearth. And milestone gray on the bead board is a perfect color choice. I’d at the very least do the shelves in the same wood tone that you trimmed the kitchen windows in. Maybe even make the lower cabinets that wood too. Having it all milestone gray may be overwhelming and the wood will compliment the color beautifully and add some dimension. The mantle and texture on the fireplace wall look great!

    First of all, i loooooove how far you’ve come into this renovation series! I’m so excited and happy for you!
    An idea for expediency sake (if you’re not already doing it), you could pre-cut all your cabinet fronts and label each one of the sides with the same number (kind of like a puzzle) so that you can focus on moving on to the next process. 😄
    Love the millstone gray for the cabinets. It’s such a beautiful colour. 😍
    I would leave the mantle as it is because I love the characteristics of something imperfect but since you don’t like the marble texture, you could paint it first then hand paint the nooks and crannies with a shade darker to bring back the depth of the details in the mantle. 😊
    Love the brick idea too! It will match perfectly if you decide to go with the lighter tiles in the kitchen that your mum likes. It would definitely bring some more similarity and cohesiveness from the kitchen into the living room. 🥰

    love the millstone gray, that was my initial thought. but seeing it in the space you could go even more dark and moody with the color choice since its such a bright space with lots of natural light. the brick would look really nice in its natural brick look, but painted it would look good with some sort of lime wash to get more of a chalkey finish. cant wait to see what you do with the space!! 🤩

    Oh that mantle! So very beautiful. I'm on board with all your choices for this area. The bookshelves, the cabinets, the plaster, the brick hearth, the paint color. My one hesitation is the paint color. I love it in the entryway. There is so much light in the living room that the color is reading different to me. But I am looking through a computer screen and you are actually there. If you like it go for it. You haven't missed yet. You are creating such beauty, warmth, and charm. Thanks for inspiring us.

    The Millstone Gray is perfect for the bead board. Not only does it tie in with the main hallway, it also sets the stage and creates a nice backdrop for decor pieces. The brick is good choice too. The purpose of a hearth is to surround the fireplace to protect from fire so non-combustible materials were used such as brick, mosaic marble or tile. Your brick will fit well and is free❤

    @ShelleB Před rokem +1

    I like the idea of using the gray color on the sides of the fireplace; it’s a continuation of the color from your entry that is repeated in another room. I also like the limewash idea for the plaster fireplace area and would paint the mantel a complimentary but slightly darker shade with glazing to add emphasis to the decorative millwork. Love the idea of repurposing the brick as a nod to the history of the home. I’m constantly amazed at the skill you possess to tackle such difficult projects. Can’t wait for the next installment.

  • @carlyherbert
    @carlyherbert Před rokem +3

    Painting brick is almost never a good idea because it’s a porous material and needs to breathe (especially historic brick)! I totally agree that the brick hearth needs to look cleaner though so maybe experiment with lime washing which will allow for that transfer of water vapor!!!

  • @woodswitchprints
    @woodswitchprints Před rokem +3

    LOVE the idea of bringing the entryway color into the bookcases that center the fireplace! I really love the brick hearth idea, too, I think that would be perfect and bring another interesting texture to the space. I also think the color of the brick compliments that dark gray-green color you're talking about. Maybe the mantle should be a deep warm brown to mirror the warmth going on in the kitchen? That way the brass or gold accents you naturally gravitate toward will tie the mantle to the moody color and continue to compliment it.

    Aaaah! I dream about my projects too! Specially figuring out complex problems. Also love the dark moody grey, feel it’s pull the room ( kitchen, entryway and living room) together. Love the texture from hood matching fireplace and yeah maybe see if the black soapstone could work as a trim around the fireplace instead of marble? Two bricks out looks like it comes out maybe to far? Perhaps one brick out and one down ( not the “too tall” version, different configuration).

    The passion behind you doing the plaster is truly an act of love for the house and your family. I love Millstone Gray by the fireplace. They actually make a hot pink paint that’s fire resistant that is made to prevent fires. To be extra sure about the mantle you can always do the fire board to know there’s no wood close to the gas insert. I also love the brick coming back into the house! You really wouldn’t need the bricks on the bottom. Then you could just save some for the front walkway to add some cottage history back to there!

    I think the fireplace surround would look great in the same black as your kitchen island to tie that in but so you don’t lose the detail you could get a gold/brass paint and dab it onto the details to bring it out really gently.
