Curio cabinet looks fab. May I suggest lining the drawer with velvet? Or some soft fabric so as not to ding the cutlery. Or silverware as you call it. Can’t wait to see what else you do in the dining room. 👍
I also would add to line it with anti-tarnish silver cloth.
I've seen a lot about the risks of using oven cleaners outside of the oven (especially when rinsing it off outside and allowing it to seep into the ground water). I'm not an expert on the issues by any means but wanted to mention so you can look into it and decide for yourself!
That's a biohazard, should be treated that way. Can't believe you hosed it off near your plants and your pool. I lusually love your videas, this was really really sad.
I was concerned when I saw Kinsley near the tarp with the liquid on it!
@@kittyskinner4280 she can never seem to keep Kinsley away from her projects, even the ones that endanger her health..
It looks so good! Your hard work always pays off 😊
I have one suggestion. Add LIGHTS INSIDE so it doesn't looks so dark. It will instantly elevate your cabinet, wallpaper and the cutlery inside.
Another really great project!
In case you did not know, it's highly likely that the drain in your patio/pool deck is a storm drain and storm drains usually go directly into a a river, lake, ocean. So the oven cleaner, dish soap is very likely not being removed before returning to natural environment.
I’m ready for a furniture flip
i was ITCHING to do one hahah! I hope you like it!
Yes that was very satisfying. ❤
MaCenna, as usual you amaze me!! Wow!! It is sooo gorgeous! I want to be you when I grow up! Lol I am old enough to be your mama❤
I see a MaCenna upload, I drop what I’m doing to watch! I appreciate your hard work!
awww omg thank you so much!
Me too! She never slows down.
I have used wallpapered foamcore cut to fit the back of shelving units. This allows for the easy removal of the paper. They just pop into the back of the shelving and i can change them seasonally!
Sweet!
I was going to suggest wallpapering something and then insert it gives the option to change out
I wrapped cardboard with damask and set it over shelves to protect them from plates sliding in and out in an antique cabinet
Love that, so clever!
I can attest to that! I wallpapered foam core for inside the bookshelves of our entertainment center in the family room. Looks great!
you can make the simplest things look so beautiful! truly an artist in all ways 🤍
o wow thank you that means so to me!
I was thinking the same thing!! ❤
Just a question, wouldn’t drenching cabinet in water make it warp once it dries?
Easy off put out a statement a few years ago saying not to use it to strip furniture because it’s going to off gas into your space….
MaCenna, I love your enthusiasm! You remind me of myself when I was younger and wanting to create a pretty home for myself and family. Although I am widowed and the kids are grown and gone, I have never lost that creative side of me to continue to do fun things around the house. Having done tons of redos, I never new about the oven cleaner method, I'll have to give it a try. Your are so much fun to watch and give me so much inspiration to go ahead and tackle another DIY, if not just for fun! Thanks for sharing.
😅
Looks lovely! I've heard some concerns about this technique and that when you wash off the oven cleaner, the runoff can be damaging to the local environment. Do you know anything about this?
I’m California everything that goes down the street drains into the ocean so please be sure it’s non toxic!!
I have been so excited waiting for my Sunday dose of calm that your videos provide! ❤
awwww :) yay that makes so happy!
It was a pretty cabinet and a bargain when you got it. Now it's even prettier! I like the twisted handle for the drawer and glad you but the clasp/closure in the middle, not the top corner.
You're shaping your home so beautifully!
The cabinet looks great. I love it. You mailed it with the cabinet lock. It’s probably identical to what the original cabinet had. And you are right on the craftsman vibe. It looks to be one of the cabinet built ins used to transition from living room to dining room found in most craftsman bungalows or cottages. Most of these cabinets were stained but many were also originally painted. Yours looks like it was originally painted and then painted many colors as we can see from the green. The one finished end is the biggest give away. It’s a beautiful piece. I’m glad you found each other. You’ve given it a good home.
If you haven’t sealed it yet, test a spot first. Many times if you apply the sealer it might darken the wood again. It probably won’t be any darker than the way it looked while wet. I think I’ve seen one furniture flipper on CZcams use a little white or beige paint in the water based Polycrylic to tone down the color. But wait for a bit before sealing until it has time to completely dry out from the washing. Sometimes if you seal it before it’s dry the topcoat can develop a haze. Best to test any sealer first. 😊
This only works if you have removable shelves, but I used peel & stick wallpaper for the back of a hand me down family secretary, but I cut a thin (1/4" thick) piece of Luan board to fit the back, and then simply covered it and popped it into the back of my secretary. You can also make small loops out of grosgrain ribbon in inconspicuous spots to assist in removing the piece should you want to change it out, etc .
I love your videos and the projects you do. I do have one suggestion (complaint…LOL) but I must be getting old because I can’t read the white calligraphy script you use. Sometimes I don’t even realize you have instructions on the screen. I was wondering if you could try a different font or maybe have them in a darker color? Just a suggestion. Keep up the good work. Also, who knew Easy Off could do that?!?
The cabinet looks amazing!!!!! Great job!!!!
I have both refinished and restored a number of antiques, at times using furniture stripper and mineral spirits or Formsby Furniture Restorer, but never have I tried oven cleaner. When you rinsed it off with the hose I was like 😮 😂. Your project turned out very nice; great job on the wallpaper (and a very pretty choice). I agree with you--beauty and charm should never be sacrificed on the altar of practicality. Don't be afraid to tackle more ornate pieces--I've done very ornate pieces with lots of detailed carving. All you need is a soft toothbrush dipped in the stripper of your choice. I once refinished a gorgeous 1920s mahogany Chippendale desk with ball-and-claw feet and lots of detailed carving using a soft toothbrush to get into the crevices. It was painted and did take some effort to remove all the paint, but it was a very satisfying project. I stained it with a cherry stain and sealed it with two coats of tung oil. A couple of times a year I keep it glowing with Howard Feed n Wax. That was a project I did 30 years ago and I still have it; it is a piece everyone loves when they see it, and you can't find pieces like these easily (I only paid $70 for it at a yard sale). Go for it, girl! 😊
I love vintage hutches/wardrobes/cabinets and can’t wait to have them in my future house. Love the stripped look here and the paper is pretty, although, I would have kept the wood - loved that look with the remnants of layered paint! Also, you could put small push lights on the bottom of each shelf to light the cabinet up. That always looks so good! 😊
The fuzziness of the wood was the result of all of that water raising the grain of the wood, and wasn’t the result of a harsh chemical in the oven cleaner.
Absolutely, same thing happened when I pressure washed a small unfinished deck before selling my house.I thought that I ruined it but it calmed down.
I know you take pride in the quality of video you put out there. It shows. Love the angles you pick, the music, and lighting. This came out beautiful 🩵
The cabinet reminded me of built ins from a craftsman style home. Some houses had built ins on each side of a fireplace. Or even on each side of an entrance into a dining room.
If it was once butted up to a wall they wouldn’t have finished the wall facing side
YES ! That is what it is.
I had one almost exactly like this that was part of a media cabinet- television cabinet on one side & curio type cabinet on the other. I also cut mine in half so I could just utilize the pretty curio side.
Gorgeous cabinet!!! Stripping brought the natural color of the wood back. The wallpaper inside elevated the whole piece. Hardware is just right & fits with age of the cabinet...goes so well with the sideboard from Atelier. Damn MaCenna...can not wait for kitchen remodel!!! Bring on the sledge hammer & knock that whole center wall down. It will open up that space beautifully. Bring in light from the front & back of the house. Your floor plan for kitchen & dining room is going to be stunning. Little French Country Cottage!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
This was such a lovely video 🥰 You felt so relaxed, maybe because it was a project that could actually be done in the allotted time? 😅☺️
I love the transformation! The wallpaper choice is divine, and the little latch **chef's kiss** and the little piece of art pulling the cabinet and the mirror together 👌 It makes me really look forward to finding a hutch for our kitchen and making it pretty (months from now)
This kind of content is so relaxing to me. Such simple changes can make a huge difference.
Love the wallpaper and the hutch.
And when you answered your phone the look on you pretty face was so heart warming too me .
Your a lucky lady to have your mom and get to share your life with her.
It’s Beautiful
Oh my goodness! I wasn't expecting such a dramatic difference, but seeing the before and after was 😍 It PERFECTLY fits the style of the house now!
The mom in me yelling, “MACENNA! Protect your eyes!!” It did turn out very pretty. Nice work!
I came on here to tell her the same!!! Glad someone else told her. God forbid some of that stuff fly right into her eyes!
Looks great! Going over the surface with paste wax and steel wool will help smooth and seal the finish without changing the color.
Love to see a beautiful piece of lace hanging off the unfinished side, casually draping down
Try using paper towels to wipe it as you scrub so less goes into drain. I do that when I use this on oven.
Love the simplicity of stripping down the finish and old stain. Definitely going to try this!!
That wallpaper is gorgeous! You've given me inspiration for a little cabinet I've had for years and had no idea what to do with. Thanks Macenna!
That easy off is great for ovens, stove tops, the circle trays on coil stoves, bottom of pots and pans, the grates in your oven... So many things!!
MaCenna, the cabinet turned out beautifully and your extra touches were the icing on the cake.🥰 As for leftover wallpaper, there are so many different things you can do with it…. Cover a little catch-all box, wrap a straight side, cylinder style vase, but my favorite is to wrap a few books then tie together with twine and use them as a stack decor piece on my mantle. Oh, there are so many things. Once again, the cabinet turned out beautifully. Thanks for sharing.❤
Thank you for always being so inspiring ❤
aww thank you so much!
MaCenna, I love your content so much. It gives me peace
aww thank youuuu! that makes so happy!
The oven cleaner did an amazing job, but i don't think i would ever use it since it's so toxic. The finished cabinet is lovely!
This cabinet redo makes me smile- a satisfied, nostalgic, heart & soul smile. Just lovely.
Some vintage, glass, buffet silverware holders would be nice in that top drawer.
Please don’t use oven cleaner for wood furniture. After water logging the wood it will continue to emit chemicals.
I can’t wait to move into our new house, my husband and I both love diy projects so we both look forward to flipping a piece of furniture together for our home. Yours turned out so nice and that’s a great tip! 👍🏼
I would line the drawer with anti-tarnish silver cloth. And, also protects the silver from moving around inside the drawer upon opening and damaging it. I also put anti-tarnish tissue paper cut in specific sizes between each utensil. Additionally, I put a piece of felt or very thin foam wrap cushion pieces between my china plates and bowls so the bottoms don't scratch the tops of layered dishes.
Hey MaCenna! For sanding in tiny crevices and detail work, I've seen furniture restorers use a nylon brush attachment on an electric drill, which works the same way as sand paper! In case this helps :) love everything you create!
Awesome Job!! Beautiful cabinet 😊
Hosing down the wood cabinet made me so nervous. Wouldn't you be worried about the wood warping or expanding?
Either way, beautiful job. Love seeing you style areas. Tons of inspo.
Absolutely love what you have done with your cabinet and I too will try the oven cleaner on something to try it. How amazing!
Your wallpaper choice was exactly perfect and perfectly you! The latch at the side is so reminiscent of that type of unit. How fun......I felt like I was watching a bride put away her fine dishes and linens for the first time. You are so genuine and love each thing you touch and give it grace and respect......not sure if anyone knows what I mean by that, but I am sure you do. This was again, so relaxing and yet exciting in the way that only you can do it. I love your dedication to your life and what you want out of it is what you indeed put into it.....I pray it always works that way for you as you and actually every woman deserves that tender heart the gives and gives back. What an influence you are as your mother was indeed as you mirror so much of her.
God bless and may all your future dreams be realized! Have a beautiful week!
Such a precious lil cabinet flip ! Love how it turned out. Would’ve loved to see that art inside the cabinet, on the top instead since the olive or dates bring the brown tones of the mirror and the shape of the frame is unique! And you get to see the art more. Love your videos
Consider adding a riser under your teapot so that is shows more. It is beautiful!
Beautiful sis!! If you have a riser, you could slightly lift the tea pot so that it can be seen better. This piece is a match made in your home. Love the wallpaper accent in the back. You are so patient with your projects, and your attention to detail is impeccable!! Love ❤️ 😍 Love, Love!!
That trim snd panels make a huge difference we did that to our boring bare walls and put photography and paintings in the spaces.
So simple with lived-in charm. I love the French vibes you’re doing lately ! Finally feeling like this is a project I can accomplish 🎉
Such good inspo! I have my parent’s old dining room cabinet with glass doors that they didn’t want anymore, so I’m planning to spruce it up with a vintage flair (since it’s not extremely old or anything). Gonna use some of these ideas too!
Yay! Curled up with my puppy watching MaCenna ❤
awwwwwww 🥰🐶
wallpapering is like trying to coral cats or nail jello to the wall. Nice redo!
A fern would look amazing on top of the cabinet! Love this!
OUTSTANDING, I love that cabinet too ! good job, it came out so great . TOO CUTE !
As always ... You are such a delight to watch with such talent, passion and joy with the things that you do!💗💗💗
That cabinet had a glow up! Also love the yellow and white tank top. Pulling together that backyard color pallet.🍋
It turned out so good!! I love the color the wood ended up being!
Wood is very porous. Oven cleaner is caustic and toxic. Rinsing with water is only getting rid of surface oven cleaner. Your finished cabinet will continue off gassing one dry in in your home.
Kind of sad that you
hopped on this
influencer” band wagon. I think you would have benefitted from more thorough research. Not just TikTok.
Still love your channel.
Omg! Everything you do is just so beautiful and inspiring! Thank you for sharing
omg wow thank you so much!
You have such an eye for design. When you held up the 3 framed art pieces, I didn't pick the one that you hung and you made the perfect choice. You just have that eye for it. That corner looks AMAZING now. Love the oven cleaner technique. I've used it before too and it's great. xo
I’m a new follower and love all your work at the cottage!!!
You are doing such a great job setting up your homes and decorating!!! I love the cabinet you stripped with the oven cleaner. As you can see it was built by a great craftsman using scrap wood. There are different kinds of wood in the build of the cabinet. It also explains the pieces with some paint remains on the inside. Also used different handles of what he had. The little latch you didn’t like was probably placed there to prevent small children from opening the door. The reason for the rounded edge to the right vs the straight edge to the left is because it was probably a part of a unit in their home and it butted up against another cabinet.
All in all it’s a great piece made by a great craftsman with great care and love!
I’m so glad you refreshed it and gave it a great home to be beautiful in !!!!
I love the life you’re building together!
Blessings to Both of you.
Your neighbor in
San Antonio Texas
This turned out gorgeous
I’m of the opinion that the oven cleaner was not a good choice, along with a few others here. I was especially worried when you were rinsing it off, where did the runoff go? Hope Kinsley didn’t get near it. ❤️😊
…into the pool or the garden?
She said that she was near the hose and the drain.
Lovely job! 😊
So true! The chemicals can be so harmful. Even if only small amounts get into the soil it can poison water and microorganisms.
I adore your decorating videos, your mini-(and big) reno projects.... but I've missed your small project DIYs like this 😊
A bob would look so good on you! Your hair is so thick and beautiful.
Oven cleaner contains sodium hydroxide which is LYE.
so good!!! i just wish she did a beige paint wash on the cabinet just to give it that extra finished look to unify and neutralise the colour yet still be rustic, you can never go wrong with paint wash 🤍
I am just in absolute awe over this, I think it just beautiful. Amazing job!
This whole video is life! From the first look at the stripped wood to the wallpaper to that olive art to the pitcher and artwork above!
Chef’s kiss!!!!!!!
It looks so beautiful! You did a amazing job!
What a great makeover on that cabinet! Well done, MaCenna 👏👏👏
I was feeling so overwhelmed and overstimulated after tough hospital shifts this weekend, and this just calmed me so much. I know you work so hard to accomplish such a soothing effect in your videos, and I just wanted you to know that it is so noticed and appreciated 🙏🤗
The cabinet came out so good. Perfect size for that space.
I clicked so fast 🥰🥰 ugh favorite part of Sunday for me!!
aww thank you !
You’ve excelled yourself again!
This is such a lovely project, and love the wallpaper choice. Great flip, the type of thing I would like to have a try at. Thanks for the inspiration 👏🏼
I love the cabinet! I love your energy, creative spirit, work ethic, your videos and most of all, the love for your family and Kinsley.
So please going forward, whenever you work with any chemicals, sanders, cutting wood, not only should you wear protective gear, but always wear eye goggles with the side shields. All it takes is a gust of wind, a splash, pulling out a nail, etc. and it landing in your beautiful eye(s). Always remember “safety first”. So take care of you!
It looks so good! It would also look so cute in between the windows in the kitchen!
YES!!
I know that "Circa 1850 furniture stripper" often is used by restoration CZcamsrs (transcendent furniture restorations comes to mind) for wood pieces particularly. It's probably a bit more expensive (& toxic) than orange stripp but it's very effective from what I've seen
Dear MaCenna, while it turned out beautiful, oven cleaner is really not meant to go into the ground , it`s just as toxic for all living things outside as it is for us. PLEASE reconsider doing this technique!! I`m sure you can find another option.
Love the wallpaper! I would have loved to see lighting added to the inside of the cabinet, that way the lovely items could be displayed in all their glory :)
I love that you wall papered the inside. I have a prepasted wall paper project I've been putting off and this gives me the push to get it done.
The cabinet looks amazing. Well done ❤❤❤
would love a mic/audio upgrade for more of a consistent volume, always great content 👍🏼💖
Great update to this cabinet. You can put clear contact paper in the drawer to protect the beautiful wallpaper. Just lovely!
Your new dish cabinet adds so much warmth and beauty. I love displaying my special treasures, makes me happy. Great job! ❤
Love the cabinet, beautiful job!!!😀
Beautiful work ❤ I’m sure your mom will love it too 😀
Obsessed with the curio cabinet!
That wallpaper is Gorgeous, as is the finished project ❤
At 23:56, when you said, “just a small cabinet full of pretty things”, made me think of Paige Sanders who used to have a CZcams channel called “Farmhouse Vernacular”. She had a larger cabinet but chocked full of dishes and she called it her “densely packed fancy”.( I miss that channel)😟
Does she not do videos anymore?
@@msmarsi009 No,and she took the whole channel down.
@lauramitchell6725 oh I really enjoyed her channel. I loved how she did her colors. How sad.
Are these products drain safe?
Nope. And they will off gas for years into her home. Oven Cleaner is not meant for this use and it is irresponsible to use it in this way. If she would have just used proper paint stripper like Quick Strip or CitrusStrip, she could have collected the material into a bin a d taken it to a place for proper disposal of hazardous chemicals. Instead, she hosed off the dangerous chemicals into the drains that lead into the local waterways. Very irresponsible. Please do not do this. If you don't know how to handle hazardous materials, don't use them. This was very disappointing to watch.
Scrap wall paper makes great Matt's for picture frames. Cabinet came out perfect.
The wallpaper was just what it needed. Lovely! ❤
Wear goggles! 👓 love it!!
Can’t believe you covered your face but not your eyes!!
How beautiful is this little cabinet you restored?! I could spend hours walking through your home looking at all the beautiful things you’ve created. Thank you for sharing! 🥰❤️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I have a cabinet in my kitchen for my nice things. It’s nice and very functional at the same time…my favourite combo. Your cabinet is lovely.
