When I was about your age, I'm going on 80 now, my husband would LEAVE for work on a weekend morning, I would redo an entire room by myself. I did keep the husband, he kept leaving and my rooms always turned out lovely. Now that I am old I miss doing the work and seeing his wonderful smiles when he'd return. Enjoy everything you do right now. The kitchen looks absolutely wonderful and your spousal person smiled while helping.

Great job on an enormous undertaking!
“I just want to be finished!” I have said it many times. Things go wrong and everything takes longer and often costs more. Plus the zillion extra trips to Lowe’s. I have been doing DIY’s before the internet 😮!! Yes, it was tough but Home Depot sometimes offered live clinics & if I was extra lucky, someone knowledgeable would be next to me in the plumbing aisle and would kindly give me a pro tip or answer a question.
CZcams has great tiling videos - they are incredibly helpful. Cutting small tile pieces to fit around outlets, etc., is difficult- especially for a first timer. I felt your pain.
You will tile again - but you need a few more tools and while you are folding laundry, you need to binge watch the professionals. It will be so much easier next time. Not easy, just easier.
Your kitchen is bright, inviting, & absolutely lovely!
Bravo to you & your fabulous plumber! xo

Oh man, I feel you with the frustration of tiling and grouting. My husband and I have a cinderblock shower in our basement, and since we were getting ready to rent our house out, we thought it would be a good idea to tile it so it didn't look so janky. We did a honeycomb floor tile, and that was a huge success, so we moved on to the sides using large white rectangular tiles. Putting up the wall tiles actually went really well, so we thought "hey, we totally got this!" Ever heard of pride going before the fall? That was us. Or, actually me, since I did the grouting. The grout went on really well, but then I left to dry too long, and ended up have to chisel and scrape Every. Single. Line. For. 5. Hours. Hubby and I have done a lot of diy projects, but I've never actually cried over one, except that tiling job. But hey, on the brightside, now we know! And your kitchen looks amazing 🥰🥰🥰

  • @DarrinsDaffs

So many great points in your kitchen reno, Carissa! You really learned from adversity .... No more brick wallpaper (I love the effect it brings!) And you don't need those stools! Grout AND wipe in segments! Changing out light fixtures is no big deal What I would change .... Having had the same sink combo, I learned VERY quickly that I used the disposal sink the most. The other sink wasn't large enough to accommodate larger cooking items. Down the road, when considering a countertop change out, think about resale value. Everything y'all have done is spot on. You used the right material for your budget and your comfort level. However, many perspective homeowners will balk at laminate countertops. You don't have to go with quartz, solid surface, marble or granite, Carissa. Y'all have proven to us and (hopefully) to yourselves that you can tackle anything. Use your current counters as a templet, pour yourselves some concrete counters and send the laminate to REHome. Lastly, if available, I would have used the same shelf supports in the barista area as on the brick wall.

Looks GREAT and modern. I love the muted pastel green pop of color below your floating shelves and the rug adds a nice touch of sophistication and personality. I think those touches were definitely needed to avoid having a super washed out look. The light fixture above the sink is a nice touch as well and the black ties into the rug. I prefer a big double sink, but the smaller one for the garbage disposal is super cute. You all did an amazing job!

Holy cow this is amazing that you, your husband and your dad did this by yourselves. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Congratulations on making your space more functional and homey. It is such an amazing before and after.

It looks amazing! We own a small townhome/condo which we know isn't our forever and it has been driving me crazy whether to renovate certain spaces or not. I think this looks like something that could be in our budget and doable for us! I just found your channel..I am loving it!

Solidarity. I effed up my backsplash job and it haunts me a bit.I did recently buy grout pens in white and painted the grout lighter.it definitely makes the flaws waaay less noticeable. Great job!

Your kitchen looks great. I’m in the middle of fixing our kitchen up now. I’d highly recommend installing the led recessed lighting and getting rid of that boob light in the middle of the kitchen. Our kitchen had 2 5 foot fluorescent fixtures inside of a large wooden housing. I ripped all that out and installed 5 led recessed lights on a dimmer and WOW it’s so much more light in the kitchen now. Everything looks great in your kitchen just wanted to share something I found super helpful. Electrical work can be a little daunting but just remember to shut off the power and you should be fine. A lot of helpful videos on how to do that here on CZcams.

Thanks to you, I made the 3 1/2 hr trip to IKEA for my FIRST TIME!! 😊😊🥳 I LOVED it and we'll be going back this weekend! My husband may not be the happiest but he's just mad because of all the stuff he had to carry and how long we were in there😜

Try buying the pursteam steamer mop for your grouting issue. I know it sounds crazy but it’s got a bunch of attachments and it can break up grout and I ton of stuff. We’ve used it in our 60 year old home and it’s worked tremendously

The cabinets look so good white. I wish I had done mine earlier but now that I’m moving my realtor said don’t bother. I bought a sprayer off Amazon and spray painted some stools I bought on Facebook Marketplace and was amazed how easy it worked. I’m way behind on your videos. I stumbled upon the kitchen renovation last night and needed to see the final reveal. Keep up the good work.

Great job! And I love the solution for the wallpapered wall; if there's one thing you learn from DIY it's that you have to be flexible. As far as changing out light fixtures, that's an easy one, I totally know you can learn it. 😊👍

My kitchen is similar to yours, especially the cabinets, but honestly I don't have the motivation to do the cabinets over with paint. I have already done the floor, which has a little of the cabinet color in it. I want to stain my cabinets with a light bleach stain, but frankly I'm scared to death.
You are brave. Lovely kitchen. Great Job.

Good job! Your backsplash adventure reminded me of a StarrTile video called Easy Way To Grout Tile. The best part starts at 05:30 in where he wipes off the grout- he is very deliberate in his steps, which I found very helpful to see.

I clean professionally for a home flipper his tile guy leaves a lot of left over grout. I also do tile/ back splash and flooring (not for him though lol) I use s.o.s pads or brillo pads and lightly scrub in circular motions on the tiles to get it off and use spray way (glass cleaner) to shine the tiles up.

Wow - fantastic job and amazing makeover. Just shows what imagination, planning, fearlessness, and hard work can produce on a budget. Our cabinets were original to our 1969 home (complete with avocado green appliances and original linoleum flooring! LOL) but were excellent quality and in overall good condition, so we, too, painted them before we moved in 11 years ago. I chose a light smokey blue and still love it. Congratulations on a great new look!

It's nice to see someone else fail at tiling. I try to do a lot of DIY and had a similar experience doing my backsplash. Thanks for sharing and being honest with your experience and experience. I had same experience with grout too, I think the quick setting grout is too quick if you're a beginner or don't have multiple people.

Looove the finished result! So glad I've discovered your channel. We recently did a kitchen makeover too (and vlogged it) and chose laminate for the same reasons. We chose not to tile as we've been down that road before and it's not easy! I think yours came out beautifully, the details everywhere just pull everything together. I know how much work it is so well done!

yes, I do know how to replace most things in my house including light fixtures, but no, its not something you should already know. changing out fixture for fixture is pretty simple though. I too learned the hard way about grout except mine was on a ceramic tile floor instead of a backsplash. LOVED your tape mock up, that's just brilliant. great job on the kitchen.
