  • If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if Porsche stuffed the stupendous 4.0-litre, naturally aspirated, flat-six from the latest 911 GT3 into the back of its mid-engine baby-brother, the Cayman… the GT4 RS is your answer. This is Porsche’s GT department letting its hair down, saying ‘hold my Stein!’, and producing the car that we’ve all dreamed about, but never thought they’d have the nerve to put into production. Was it worth the gamble? Top Gear Magazine’s Editor Jack Rix strapped himself in on road and track to find out.

      Even if they do, it’s unlikely they will license it to other car makers. They’re not making a lot of that stuff, 500000 litres in the first few years of production. I reckon that’s about 8000 911s worth of fuel and that’s it. Think F1 has a better chance of getting something like that out to the automotive world.

    For those curious about the Person at Porsche who made this one and other Models like it possible, search for "Andreas Preuninger". He's a True Car Guy and the opposite of "Business Person who has no idea about Cars" of which sadly too many are around in decision-making positions.
    In fact i believe Chris Harris here on the Top Gear Channel did visit Andreas and did a great talk with him, but there's much more

      I think you can thank Porsche as a whole because I’m sure there are passionate people from the likes of Audi, Merc, VW, etc. that want to do something special, but the board didn’t provide funding cause they thought there would be too little demand to make it profitable. Porsche on the other hand are just full of passionate people, so you can’t just give credit to Mr Prunigner.

I've been an engineer for 30+ years now and know a lot more about cars and feel even more strongly that no automobile manufacturer gives their owners as much as Porsche does, at any price.

    Having spent quite a bit of time behind the wheel of the first gen GT4, I've got to say this looks like a masterpiece. The standard GT4 is so beautifully balanced, obviously the only major downfall was the slight lack of power. It was a quick car, but by no means fast, and you had to work it higher in the power band to get its full potential. This on the other hand looks like something else, for the best.

    • @ejhaneine3168
      @ejhaneine3168 Před 2 lety

    My biggest positive is that that superb noise is being channeled into the interior of the car. Andy Pruninger said it meets all worldwide exterior noise regs, but the inside it’s the “Robbie Williams of Porsches”. So many car lovers criticise OPF for ruining noise, but that’s only on the outside. Who is supposed to enjoy a performance car? THE DRIVER (and his passenger(s)). That’s what’s important, and Porsche Motorsport have nailed it again. Such a purposeful car, a fitting goodbye to the ICE entry-level Porsche sports car. I am hopeful the EV replacement will live up to the Porsche name, but it’s unfortunate.

      @@eugenux You're missing the point of why EV's are and will mostly take over the car market everywhere given enough time. Yeah sure it's better for the environment but that's not really the biggest driver. EV's are simply a better, more reliable and cheaper infrastructure in the long run for everyday cars. there's a quarter of moving parts and electricity can be made a dozen different ways, allowing greater flexibility for both developed and developing countries to make (oil, gas, ethanol, wind, nuke, solar, hydro, geothermal, etc). I love the sound of engines, the feeling, the connection to the drive it gives. Personally I have both, an EV for commuting everyday, a NA 6-spd V8 for the weekends. For most people the EV (once the battery price comes down) will be the way to go. Even a lot of fellow aerospace engineers I work with appreciate an engine, but EV is just nicer... and 90%+ of people dont give any shits what they drive as long as it gets them there. There will always be a market of ICE just like people ride horses or sail boats. But most people just want easy and reliable, which is an EV.

      They couldn't fit the GT3s manual in here because it wouldn't fit and GT4s manual can't take the 9000rpm redline. So either they'd need to redesign the whole chassis, limit the redline to something lower or design a completely new transmission which would be stupidly expensive.

    The gt4rs for sure. I have always thought that cayman was a great car and even some ways better than a 911 as it is mid engine and alot more balanced because of it. And it looks great 👍

    It’s probably hard to make a manual that shifts well at 9000 revs? I doubt people would want a 4 speed dog box. Sounds like the PDK is awesome. Such a dream car.

    They finally finally is willing to give the gt4 it's best engine instead of making it forever missing that last bit of power against the 911. I am now fully convinced this is last combustion cayman model

      @EpicB Před 2 lety +1

      Porsche has confirmed the next 718 Boxster/Cayman lineup is going electric, so I guess in some way the Cayman GT4 RS is Porsche's final sendoff for the internal combustion 718.

      @Charming Chowder Yeah, I don't disagree with you. I now drive an E92 M3 competition spec in manual. I love it and I don't drive much being inner city. I'll buy another Porsche one day - they are beautiful cars. And yes, I invest in other stuff too. Cheers, have a good day.
