A few simple clues to what you might have is, if you have a 1972 Denver mint version then you know you've got a type - 1 because the 1972-D Eisenhower dollars used only the type-1 reverse throughout the entire year. (Also, note the islands appear to the right of the bottom tip of Florida unlike the type 3).
Coins with the type-2 reverse have no islands, just water ripples so that's also pretty simple. As well as the continents on the globe are less detailed. (It was was used for the 1972-S Proof and Uncirculated Dollars. It was also used on some of the Philadelphia mint dollars. As mentioned, either by accident or possibly not.)
On the the type-3, the islands appear below and the the left of Florida (unlike the type 1).

I love the clad Eisenhower dollars. I can never get enough. I hoard them-lol.
I was under the impression that the type 2 had a more rounded Earth and small or indistinct islands.
I have even sold this variety as a type 2.

Gots a lot of old coins including two types of this dollar. Found a couple of the golden dimes from 1946, I'll have to video myself when I finally take my coins to a shoppe. Then I'll be like those cats on antique road show going ohh, dam it, face palms and such.

Yes he did. The 1972 has the 1971-s proof reverse. Incluse islands. They call the 1972 proof reverse The King of the Ike’s
