No Crank No Start! Not what YOU Think! 2012 Hyundai Elantra 1.8

- Customer States: Engine does not start sometimes, you turn the key and nothing happens.
This 2008 Hyundai came it with an intermittent no crank condition. What is happening is the starter and the engine to not turn on when the ignition key is. The failure doesn't happen all of the time. We checked out the simple things first like the battery and the battery cables. The ignition system seemed to work normally and the relay also checked out. The diag went down to the starter motor and we had to use a spliced wire lead to connect a test light for more diagnostic information.
The faulty component was not what you would expect!

Every neighborhood needs a Ray.
Better Yet,
Every SHOP needs a RAY.
Bradenton, FL is lucky to have him.
Everybody needs a rain man! ... A few years ago I edited the song rainmaker :by: the Cryin' Shames : which I added in a perfect Round of thunder to the song then later I tried adding in a cackle of a witch to the song... I have Four versions of the song now! they all sound good... I just can not release the copies. do to the laws the forgo such great mixing!
I’m a recovering Hyundai tech. There’s a 1 pin connector near the air box on almost every hyundai which is the starter solenoid wire. This is always my go to test point to check starter signal. Those solenoid connectors always break!
Honestly Hyundai doesn't pay warranty diag so if it has extended warranty or its still in its 6 years/120km I just start with a starter lol
@@sebbykaiser6466 Good thing Car Dealerships do not place Warranties in Micro Miles Or micro KM! Or worse yet Inches vs Miles or KM! Your stay at the dealership while that is being printed out... might be a while! which may give you reason to check out more cars!
That's actually not exclusively Hyundai... The 2010 Ford I'm driving has the same connector clipped to the side of the battery box... it's also a known failure point... not sure but it seems there's some similarity there... but that's just my opinion as a Tech with 30+ yrs exp.
No crank no start on these Hyundais is always an initial 2 step process for me. 1) Try to turn the engine over by hand. 2) If it turns over, put a power probe on that wire and see if it cranks.
@@1337penguinman I have had a few people call me with the no crank no start problem with Ford trucks and I say I only have one question. "Has the battery recently been changed? "
The answer is almost always a YES. I tell them that I can tell them what to do to start it but they'll owe me my $20 diagnosis fee when they do.....
Out of over a dozen people I've only had one person who didn't bring it.... So, he's no longer a customer.....
I love these diag videos Ray. These are great examples of critical thinking skills and troubleshooting. Thanks for sharing brother!
As an electronics technician, I can confirm that the troubleshooting procedure was accurate and valid.
When Ray was holding the key in start and it wasn't doing anything, I was yelling at him to jiggle the shifter. He couldn't hear me though😀. He still got it in the end though. thanks for bringing us on your diag.
Why did you not try a neutral position to see if it would start
When faced with this situation, I try the jiggle test of the neutral safety switch before rigging lights. My very first failure to start was in my first car, a 1960 Impala back in 1970. Being a kid, I bypassed the switch. it was fun to launch by starting in drive. Those were the days of simple cars--yet they still had failures. Your method achieves the same results with a greater degree of certainty, given the complexity of modern systems.
I don’t care where i am when i here white snake i stop and listen…..that song always takes me back🤷🏿♂️😂
White snake and all the other hair bands the men who dressed like woman with make up and even their hair was done like females, those bands killed Rock and helped usher in rap. I despise all those crap bands for that reason!!!!!!😡
Admirable dedication and humility in your content. Keep inspiring!
Piss off you fem bot
I would love to have a Ray closer to my area. Watching his videos for the last few years tells me that I could absolutely trust him to do work on my vehicles.
His videos are addictive !
Ray’s only about 20 hours away from me, so it could be an excuse to escape the Midwest for a bit and enjoy the warmth of Florida. Though it will tack a little extra cost onto that repair bill 😂
@@thewausaudude it’s not that far for me, but it’s still a hike. I’ve got friends in that area and have more than once considered a visit… ha
I visited Florida yesterday but not in Ray's area. Hit Juniper, West Palm Beach and part of Okachobe yesterday. Wish that I would've had the time to hit Ray up but I was on a tight schedule.
I am an electrical engineer that designed power supplies and battery chargers. Ray is very good at explaining troubleshooting.
I know this is RmR's channel, but... how good are you at The electrical end of sound systems? I sure would like to know how, An amp can be made to handle full four track wiring with out the discrete board. No one needs that board anyways, it just destroys the Quadraphonic experience any ways!
BEFORE YOU REMOVED THE NSS, I WOULD HAVE TRIED TO SEE IF IT STARTED IN NEUTRAL.
Absolutely easy test
If it did what would that mean?
Neutral safety switch, brings back memories.
Interesting… this is the second repair vid I’ve seen where a faulty neutral safety switch was causing a non-start. And man, I love those interactive schematics. What a great tool.
I’d be willing to bet any other shop would’ve instantly diagnosed this as an ignition switch. Goes to show the extent of care Ray puts to not just fire a parts cannon hoping to fix the issue.
Rainman you're awesome mate!
Ray A nice diagnosis. It’s like mowing the grass. (You can see the results). Once there was a no start in a parking lot. They were talking to the tow truck driver. I told them to put it I. Neutral and I start. They said good bye to tow truck driver. Anyway Ray have a good day
Great video Ray.
Uggh, intermittent issues are the worst and are notoriously difficult to troubleshoot. Good work Ray!
Well done 👏
Nice job Ray!
Impressive Ray man!
Learning so much from your diagnostic videos!
I completely enjoyed this diag great video.
This is great. My wife's 2016 1.8L Elantra has started to have exactly this problem. Your video is going to minimise my diag time. Thanks Ray.
Well done Ray !!😃
Very nice diag sequence Ray
Nicely done Ray !
Good day to you Ray and all at the shop! Hope you all have a very good day!
Keep the diag videos coming! Definitely a favorite.
Nice job!
That really was “a very good video”! I enjoy these diagnostic detective jobs. I find them much more interesting than a brake job or fluid change - even though I enjoy them too. Nicely done, Ray.
Well done !!!!!
Yessss, a longer video 👍
What a great diag and explanation process. Very educational!
Outstanding video
You did it again ray!!! You are the best at what you do!
the people of the sunshine state are so very fortunate
Excellent and superb diag
Good one Bryan.😊
Outstanding work my friend!!!
Love to hear your approach to diagnosing a problem Ray! Great job!!
Keeping retired Master Tech Brain sharp! Thanks
Sometimes a broken system is easier to troubleshoot than a intermediate one, I know because I seen lots of that aa a aircraft electrician intermediate USAF, I like watching you do electrician work, brings back good memories, and keep my brain working.
Is that like an intermittent problem?
T-shoot videos are the best 👍
Dammm ray perfect diag and repair bud nice job
Awesome video especially when you show us your thinking process step by step! Nice Ray!!
Very methodical process.
Awesome as always!
Ray's diagnostic skills are exceptional !
Great content! hello from Norway!
Dang, you are smart as a whip!
Wow Rainman diagnostics
that car is in good shape - clean
I really enjoy your electronics problem solving. Keep it up. Ron in Indianapolis.
Awesome video. It looks like the new switch has a protective cover to guard again water entering the switch, the old one does not have this. Would be cool to see the inside of the old switch. I would guess the old one has some corrosion in it.
There is an older Ray video that ended up being the range selector switch. In that one he did open up the failed switch.
Great diagnosis video good work Ray 😁👍
Great diagnosis as always. Love your videos.
Really enjoy your electrical troubleshooting. Your online diagrams are killer too.
Loving this "classic Ray" diagnosis video - just like the old days 🥰
Excellent video! Just excellent!
I really enjoy watching you go through the diagnosis of an issue . Thank you it was fun . Stay safe , have fun .
Great bit of electrical problem determination....super thorough as usual!
Nice troubleshooting as usual Ray, the key to successful repairs!
You did a great job on this one keep up the great work 👍💪
Good job! You made it look so easy 😅
Hey Ray, brilliant diagnosis. I was blaming the key switch all the way through until you found the actual problem. Great work! Cheers!
You are so good.
Absolutely inspiring to DIY person that looking over and over this channel. Great job Raymond!
Excellent diagnostic sense. Very methodical and thoughtful. Great job.
I love these diag videos of having to test multiple different relays, switches, etc that are critical to the operation, great video Ray
Love the packing tape mod on the driver side rear view mirror.
Nice troubleshooting and repair.
Thank u for sharing your knowledge I am a mechanic with little electrical knowledge and am learning through your channel
Thanks!
I love a good diag video! Keep them coming Ray, your videos are my evening chill out after work. I do find myself suggesting the next step as you go. My wife thinks I’m nuts. 😆. I’m also astounded by how clean a 10 year old car is in Florida compared to a 2 year old car in the UK! It looks like it rolled of the production line only last week!
nice job
Hi Ray excellent video on no starting pretty smart mechanic and as always you all be safe 🇺🇸🇺🇸
Well done 👍
I learned a lot from this video. I like working with wiring diagrams and diagnosing electrical and this helps.
After the repair, did you check to see if it started in "N" and did not start in th "R" or "D". If everything worked. Nice Job!!
Nice bit of fault finding. Impressive.
I am really impress with your knowledge you know about the electrical system of autos.
Every neighborhood needs a Ray, I tried doing his diagnostic skills once...let's just say my car is still at the mechanic's!
Good job Ray!..No guessing..just proper testing leads to no mistakes..
This was a very good video. Like rays older videos 👊🏻👍🏻
Thank you
Ray there is a TSB 17-AT-005 from Hyundai about this issue, and one of the symptoms is "Intermittent no engine crank/no start in “P” or “N” with or without MIL or DTC.". It's a known issue.
My old landlord had the same car and issue. You'd have to row it between park and neutral before it would start. More often than not, it starts in neutral vs park.
That's probably why the new one looked different and oreillys had it on the shelf
Nice!
Old original one gets water in it, and as the safety start is on the bottom, that fails before the display starts to give false readings. Bottom is the safety switch, and the reverse light, top is the trans position switch. Most common would be start failure, but another clue is the reverse lamps either glowing dimly, or being burnt out from being on all the time.
Welcoming back!
Very interesting diag tour thru the starting circuit. And excellent commenting on the way. Thanks for the "very good video" - as you always say.
Thanks for taking us through the troubleshooting steps. It is one thing to tell us the problem but even better to show us the thought process, full diagnostic, full repair. Helps us all!!
You’re a genius!!
Good job ray there needs to be more like you😊😊😅😅
Love watching.
you do good work!
you're intelligent and you're funny all in one🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
Hey Ray! Did anyone ever tell you that you're a Ray of sunshine? Love your video brother! 😀
These deep diagnosis investigations are my top favourite videos, Sir Raylock Holmes.
Guessed it would be the relay. Wrong! Good Video
Ray you do have the right nick name Rainman Ray 👍
That was a dinga.
A dinga beauty.
You were in the zone on this one and very well explained along the way.
Just a simple test light and a logical process of elimination leading you to the fault.
I don't work on cars, but I really enjoy your videos. Your narration is easy to follow and informative thank you for what you do. If I ever break down in Florida, I would want to bring my vehicle to you. You give the profession an excellent name, my friend.
It's good to see that you don't immediately yeat a perfectly good starter. Taking that time to diagnose and correct the actual problem means that you're keeping your customers and you're not getting returns for a problem THAT WAS NOT FIXED.
I've had so many range selector issues with different vehicles that it was my first guess on this one but your testing method is right on track with what I normally do. Had a lot of issues with DOA Chinese knockoff range selectors from Amazon.
61st! Happy HUMPDAY Ray and the wife unit. Including the new employees. Roger in Pierre South Dakota
