Temper that with a healthy dose of doing as much roleplaying as you feel comfortable doing.

I also think playing in a proactive manner is great, but most of the suggestion here might make the players less passive yet the advice leads for the most part just to a reactive playstyle not a truly proactive one. I completely agree with you that taking the initiative is great, but you always frame that in an reactive manner, that the players react to the puzzle in an active manner. But a proactive approach would be more of actively putting things into the game and not just reacting to things that the GM put there.

The cuts in this video made it sometimes a little hard to watch as the cutting away before you finished a word or sentence sometimes really irritated me and made it difficult for me to follow the trail of thought as easily. It was just a bit strange to listen to and it happened quite often and abruptly.
I do agree with everything you said though, sometimes it did happen that a DM I palyed with wasn't really ready for those questions and almost made the palyers feel a bit unwelcome when they asked about anything that wasn't already highlighted, so that can definitely be an issue when dealing with game masters that the player isn't already familiar with. Communication is always key but for me it's usually difficult to know how to bring it up, especially when I don't know if the other people in the party feel the same way.

    1.
Know your character and his motivations.
    2.
Act, dive in, do not wait for things to happen, do not expect to be handed everything on a silver-plate for free
    3.
Investigate things, ask questions, look into things, engage with the game-world.
    4.
Do not argue with your co-players but try to reach a consensus on how to move forward.
    5.
Do not ponder on your decisions forever, make decisions based on available informations in a reasonable time-scale.
Take some risks and do not fear mistakes!
