I want to suggest a safety tip. Ive had boats for 35 years and its very hard to see kayaks and canoes on the bay, especially in natural colours. The bigger the boat the harder it gets. Its great to help boats see you by wearing bright colours. If you are lost at sea or sink you are also easier to see for rescue services.
Hello again Steve, yes I agree the dark colours are harder to see. I made sure that I went around boats instead of expecting them to see me and divert. Only way to ensure my safety. Cheers Paul
I cant believe its so calm. Ive been in a 17ft Haines Half Cabin on the way home and in 30 min a giant squall swept up waves that we were falling off the top of and dispersing in between them so deep we couldn't see out. Id love to try it in a kayak so thanks for the tips.
Hi Steve, yes it's a brilliant trip across and you would do it easy in a kayak. Happy to help and thanks for watching. Regards Paul
Nicely done Paul. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Spike, I couldn’t comment on your video? Really enjoyed seeing you explore new places and getting some km’s up in your Canoe.
Yes Paul, I have comments turned off… but I am not hard to contact.😊
Hi Getgoin, great video. I could almost hear my father in your comment about the boaties. We used to boat camp on the Myall Lakes (in the 1970s), pick a quiet location, anchor up and settle in. And just before nightfall be joined by a bunch of other guys who'd anchor so close that there was a chance we'd hit them if the boat swung around in a back eddy of the wind. Some of them had lots of money, but no idea.
So it’s not just me. You’re right about the money to idea ratio! Cheers Paul
Thanks for sharing another enjoyable and inspirational video. 👍
Glad you enjoyed it and humbled that you found it inspirational. Cheers Paul
Thanks Paul for sharing this trip. Really like this one in our own backyard. Just love the self reliance and no fuss 👍😃
Thanks Shaun
I fish in the same canoe as your’s I go out into Stockton Bite fishing for flathead and people say the same thing I go out as the tide is going out of the hunter river and return when the high tide comes in I do the same at Nelson Bay & at Port Kembla around the islands
Hi Keneth, yes it’s all about understanding your location and managing the risks. Cheers Paul
Paul another great video. Always look forward to them. Love the drone shots too. Best of all you inspire confidence in those who have never thought they would be able to do anything like this.
Hi Larry, thank you for the kind words. One of my hopes for the channel was that I would inspire others to get out and explore, so its gratifying to hear that I maybe hitting the mark. Cheers, Paul
Seeing people leaving rubbish behind in a place like that makes me furious. It looks like a truly magical place, thanks for sharing with us. Definitely adding this one on to my list of places to kayak camp. Did you launch from Cleveland area?
I probably should have just waited until the end where you explained all of it :)
Hahaha all good, it’s a popular boat ramp with lots of parking. Let me know how the trip goes when you head over.
Nice vid. I have sailed out there and camped at the eastern end where the sand is whiter and less of a low tide sand flat but have been wondering about a kayak trip. The fact you did it in a canoe has give me all the confidence that my hobie will safely get me there. Cheers
Yes the Eastern end is beautiful, just to crowded. You will do it easy on the Hobie, it’s a great trip. Cheers Paul
Pretty cool video Paul. Good to see you testing the limits of your canoe. It looked as though it handled the crossing easily. It’s funny how us humans have a herd mentality and feel safer if we are near others even if they are axe murderers. Think of the positives. The more they crowd together, the more space for those of us who enjoy seclusion. That is why I detest caravan parks. Should be picking up mine next week. Going up to Yamba and planning to catch up with Dan for the handover while up there. See your next effort in a fortnight.
Also while I think of it. I knew of a bloke who, when he wanted to do a traverse of a river would stash his boat at the entry point, drive his car down to his exit and then organise a lift back up on the morning school bus run. Just a thought for you.
Thanks Ken, very exiting news on the Canoe, Dan is a legend in the industry. Don't be afraid to drop it into the river at his place for a test run. Love the idea of the school bus run, I will keep that one in mind. Cheers Paul
Hey Paul what are you using to seat your fold out camping chair on pls? What a great idea. Great vid again.
Thanks Fred, it’s a Trekology Sand Cover/ Beach Mat. Same brand as the chair. I must admit its been a big improvement for soft ground and sand. Cheers Paul
What a cool place to camp! Great video. Is that a public camping area or a stealth camping situation?
Thanks! This is a public camping area you need to book online here: parks.des.qld.gov.au/parks/teerk-roo-ra/camping
Cheers, Paul
Hi Paul, another great vid, many thanks. Can I ask what fry pan you use there?
Thanks Brenden, the frying pan is a GSI Glacier Stainless. Very happy with it. Cheers Paul
