CONONDALE N.P. "GREAT WALK" | Solo overnight Camp in a Rainforest. Steak and Chips
Quick overnight camp on the first part of this walk. Beautiful Rainforest walk, but the leeches were crazy. Love the campsites with decks, toilet and water tank. Makes for luxury camping!

Best video I have seen on that section Paul, it didn't look inviting downstream of Northern Broad Water Bridge, something like a barrel may be an appropriate watercraft, like they used on Niagara Falls. Do not give up on the Clarence, launch at the Gorge, the river is stunning and you have the skills to get to Copmanhurst.
Thanks for the feedback, yes a barrel or Pack Raft would have been better. I will definitely go back when the weather sorts itself out. Cheers Paul
@@Getgowin Just got back from the Gorge yesterday. Levels are good, too much water for me to paddle up the Gorge.Jeez, love to be 10 years younger. meeting Belinda is worth the drive alone.
Well done Sir! Thank you! :)
Glad you enjoyed it. Cheers Paul
That's Pikes Creek that feeds Glenlyon dam, isn't it. If so, you won't find Bass, Just Cod, Yellowbelly, and Silver perch.
Hi Stuart, correct I realised this when I got home. Still, a Yellow Belly would have done! Cheers Paul
@@Getgowin I noticed you haven't done one on the Logan and Albert systems. The Logan particularly is a beautiful waterway. I've caught Bass and Mary River Cod in there as well. Along with seeing the odd Platypus. Kind of biased, as I am in the LAFMA. I used to be in AFSAQ, now FFSAQ, along with BVA (Brisbane Valley Anglers) a longtime ago, when they first started stocking the catchment dams and rivers. That was the local stocking group back then.
@stuartpilling6190 cheers, I’ll put them on the list.
I have just found you channel and am enjoying your vids very much, thank you. Connondale to Kennelworth is also a sensational paddle when the river is about 80cm at Kennelworth. There are also lots of lungfish and platypuses along this stretch.
Thanks Michael, now I have another stretch to paddle! Would love to see the Lungfish. Cheers Paul
Just got recommended this video. Thanks for sharing mate. I've also got the Copper Spur tent, Nemo pillow and S2S mat, so a very similar setup! Been looking at those Alton 3x3 tarps for a while now, might have to bite the bullet and get one.

Hi Paul Mate came across your channel really enjoying it as am an old bloke lived local as you are and just retired have got a lot of camping gear that needs to be used is that flextail mozzi thing that good, and what stuff fo you rub on your lures from that tube love to catch up for a beer one day Cheers Mark
Hi Mark, great to have you on board! The Flextail does work, just used it again on the weekend. I run Sfactor on my lures. Seams to work for fresh and salt water. I’ll take a rain check on the beers, to bloody busy. Cheers Paul
Fished this spot many times and never done great with lures. Using yabbies works well on the whiting there. Note: some large stingrays in there and bull sharks.
Thanks Bob, I did catch a nice Trevally on a lure in a previous trip, but, every guy I spoke to that weekend was using bait. So thanks for the heads up, and for watching. Cheers Paul
Loving the hiking and bushcraft videos. I think you’ve inspired me to try some pancakes and bacon next time I’m out. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Adam, pancakes and bacon are definitely worth a go. Thanks for watching. Regards Paul
Lovely spot, good production on the video too. How do you keep your cheese/meat from spoiling? And how do you find camping under only a tarp in the Aus wilderness? I've seen other bushcrafters online using a tarp setup, but I thought it was more suited to continents that don't have our unique palette of potentially dangerous critters
Okay, so I use a cooler bag in my pack. It only needs to keep things cool for about 6 hours. Camping under a tarp is great. Despite what overseas people are shown we don’t have dangerous creatures that would come into a camp. Biggest issue is mosquitoes and sand flies. I use a Flextail insect repeller which hangs inside the tarp. Thanks for watching. Regards Paul
Good video mate . It's beautiful up there , can't wait to go next month for 12 nights
Cheers Mat, it’s well worth a look.
Longer canoe draws shallower for low water creeks. Longer base length handles whitewater better. It spans swells like a champ
Very true, but I hate longer canoes in the wind. Especially on lakes. That’s why we need both. Thanks for watching.
My personal favorite as well is the badger otter tail in cherry. Thanks for the informative video.
My pleasure Jason
Another quality video Paul. Thanks for sharing. By you sharing this with the world no doubt there would be many people (not me I get out there too)that would never get to see these parts of the ancient land that we live on.
Thanks Scott, that is the great thing about CZcams, everyone gets to see our beautiful land. Cheers Paul
Usually just coffee but keen to test out some breakfast recipes with my new dehydrator. Awesome video!
I’ve toyed with the idea of a dehydrator for years. Interested to see how it goes for you. Thanks for watching.
I keep looking for a tarp that has both a ridge line and diagonal tie-outs. Your tarp seems to have what I am looking for or something similar. Does anyone know of any? I don't see it in your gear list.
Hi Kristina, you’re correct my tarp isn’t in my list. I will add it today. Follow this link to Alton Goods, I really love mine. altongoods.com/products/3mx3m-ultralight-tarp
It might be an “Alton goods” tarp.
@kentitcume645 it is
Thank you so much! I will check that out :) @@Getgowin
@krisvq pleasure
@getgowin where I live there is not much place to camp/hike around here, only thing close is a state own campground, almost all the land where i live is privately owned and there are no real places to just go out camping except for the state campgrounds. As far as breaky goes I like an earl grey tea to start my day with then maybe sausage and scrambled egg taquitos, or bratwurst and scrambled eggs, oatmeal, or nothing but a cup of tea to start my day not a real big breakfast person like a bigger lunch and dinner.
Yes we are blessed in Australia to have many wild places to explore. I am the same normally I won’t eat until around 10:00am or later. Both of your ideas sound great, with a cup of tea of course. Thanks for watching. Regards Paul

Cup of tea is enough for me.
Yeah I’m typically just a coffee in the morning.
Hi Paul, looks like a nice setup but I just want to warn you of the other attempted influencers' mistakes... starting fires outside of established fire spots, near creeks and off track in leaf litter without a fire ring or established location is notorious for not following Leave No Trace and Caring For Country. Despite your bivvy setup, I would assume that someone with this capability knows better than to do this. Either that or you've been watching some of the CZcams influencers who actively do not care about Leave No Trace and just want to CZcams it. Be warned that National Parks are starting to get the shits with this sort of disregard and have actively fined and banned people from recreating. By posting it on CZcams, you are creating a legacy and evidence trail for you to get banned and to teach all the noobs that it is tolerable to bush bash off track and set up a shitty campfire wherever they like. I would be deeply concerned about the fire in the location you are in as it is QLD and the fire season is technically still on, additionally, I don't believe that you have a bucket or similar to put out the fire immediately. Seems to me that you need a skill upgrade before you go ahead and post your NO Leave No Trace Methods. DM me if you'd be interested in upgrading your knowledge! Cheers 🙂 PS Drones are frowned upon in National Parks - I hope this is private property!
Hi Heidi, thanks for watching and for your concern. Let me address some of these. The fire was lit on gravel, the leaves you can see were put there by me. As you will see towards the end of the video I filmed where the fire was and there is no trace. I was about 3 metres from the creek and had plenty of options including two water bottles and a pot to put out the modest fire I had. Further there was no wind to spread the fire, so it was 100% safe. As far as skills are concerned I have been camping in the wild for over 50 years, so I think I have a fair idea. I wasn't camping in a national park, so as such I can have a fire. I'm not an influencer, I just share my camping trips and will continue to do so. Regards Paul
@@Getgowin 1. fire was lit on river stones that have had a history of water. This can cause exploding steam rocks when heated. Fire is setup too close to your tarp and there is no fire ring. It is also an established fire scar therefore not being leave no trace. Fire is also too close to the water source and too close to your setup. Additionally, is having a fire necessary? 2. Leave No Trace rules state that you must be at least 50m from a water source. 3. All of those trees are widow maker risks. 4. People who have driven for decades can still be bad drivers if they don't update their skills. To have this mentality of "I've camped for 50yrs and therefore have nothing to learn" is quite embarrassing. If you really have the skill level and experience you say, then you wouldn't embarrass yourself on YT by leaving a long trail of evidence that you don't know what to do. 5. By filming your CZcams and posting it all over FB you are attempting to be an influencer that doesn't know what they're doing
@@catdogpizzaplant May I buy in? I have been watching Paul’s CZcams stuff pretty much from the start and at no stage have I ever seen him being disrespectful of the environment in which he is in. As for leaving no trace I would think he would be one of the better practitioners on CZcams. I fully understand and agree with the ethos of leaving no trace and when you see some of the messes left, especially in national parks it makes you scratch your head as to how some people function. And I wouldn’t label Paul an influencer. He doesn’t push product or promote sponsors if he has any. To me it seems he is just sharing experiences with other, like minded people. One last thing. Window makers? I like woodwork and didn’t see any trees you could make windows from. Just a little humour. Take care everybody and enjoy what you do.
@@kentitcume645 Refer to my list of 5 and discuss it specifically. I did not critique or ask for a character reference. PS widow makers is a term used for trees that are at high risk of dropping a limb at any moment. These are usually fire, water or disease-damaged trees. However, eucalyptus and Australian trees are notorious for it due to our wind/cold/wet/dry extremes that stress limbs and weaken them. All of these trees in the videos are at risk of dropping a limb hence, the name widow maker. You can definitely take the risk of sleeping there but it is bad practice to intentionally place yourself in possible risk. Ultimately we don't want the SES to be utilised. And if you don't know that kind of terminology, then I would suggest that you're not quite the best judge of ethical outdoors recreation. Sure his intention may not be disrespectful but the outcome is not the same. The position I have is that there are many people chucking their vids up on YT and invest all this time and effort into it BUT refuse to read high accessible, easy to implement ethical practices that ensures the land can be respected for many eons to come. You may think he is not disrespectful to the environment despite it being against multiple of the LNT rules? So what is your criteria for that... is it "He's a good guy and doesn't leave plastic in the fire pit"? Because if so, that's not LNT - that's just not being a dickhead. Also, you cannot see this as potential for promoting Alton products who are notorious for picking these sorts of influencers. An influencer is anyone who is asked for specific advice and influences purchases - in almost every video he does this.
@@catdogpizzaplant it’s okay Heidi. I appreciate and fully respect your passion. As for the “window maker I thought you may have picked up on the attempted humour. I have been involved with timber all my adult life as was my father and my grandfather before him was an old school timber getter so I was well aware of the dangers of said trees. Let’s leave it there, get on with life and enjoy whatever we do in a responsible manner. Take care.
Cheesecake when camping. You are spoilt. It’s a great time of year to get out with weather like that.
Yeah it was a treat! Finally some decent weather after a crap summer, it was perfect. Cheers Ken
I guessed your favorite just glancing over your selection. ;) I bring many paddles when out on the water, but my favorite as well is my odder tail. I had mine custom made from Fishell Paddles and chose walnut with a leather wrap. It is truly a beautiful paddle and effortless in use. Cheers!
Now I need a leather wrapped paddle! Maybe next time. Thanks for watching.
Hello my fellow paddler and CZcamsr! I appreciate your overview of a short canoe and I get it! However, I have the opposite view, but to each his own right? I use a 16-foot solo carbon/Kevlar composite because I spend most of my time on lakes. It's faster and more efficient than a shorter canoe. It handles rocks and bumps easily. It tracks far better than a prospector design, and it carries more cargo. The biggest issue for me is weight. My 16-footer is 29 lbs, which is far lighter than any 11 - 13 foot canoe I've seen online. That said, a shorter canoe is easier to maneuver, and if you get a fiberglass layup, you can fix it easier in the field. Many blessings!
Hey thanks for watching my video, I’ve watched a couple of yours over the years and you guys are spoilt for choice. As I explore more places I realise that a 2 boat policy might be better for all the reasons you stated above. Cheers Paul
Great video, looks awesome, looking forward to having a paddle here.
It’s a beautiful part of the world Linda, well worth checking out. Thanks for watching.
Paul, you can't have a fire in QLD NP's? Thanks for sharing again.
Correct Fred, however I see fire rings everywhere…
Those lamington spiny blue crayfish are awesome. Did it hiss at you?
Yes lots of hissing and posturing, very cool. Thanks for watching
Hey Paul, mate thanks for taking us on your trip. I did the binna Burra to Orielly's walk last year in the pouring rain and it was a hard slog so feel your pain. Is such a beautiful place. Cheers Shaun
Thanks Shaun, where did you camp on that trip? I’m keen to do it myself.
Nice vid Paul. Yeah, I wouldn’t go anywhere there atm without long pants, gaters and lots of Bushman’s (or something with the equivalent amount of deet in it). Hate leeches. I bet the bites are itchy now.
Spot on Greg, bites are just starting to tingle.
Nice look Thanks . Was some hard and wet leachy yakka . good effort . We have traveled and hiked much of australia in the past and and Lamington NP stands out for pristine rainforest an amazingly well preserved place . Glasshouse mtns next ?
Yeah definitely on the list, just need the rain to go away. Thanks for watching. Cheers Paul
Beautiful filming my friend, this was enjoyable presentation!
Thanks for the great feedback and for watching. Regards Paul
So was it a double booking? Or did someone not want to pony up the $6.50 in booking fees? 😅
Hahaha, I did book the point lookout site, but when I got to Echo Point at 5:30 at night and it was empty I assumed the person had changed their mind. Turns out he was just late... Luckily for me there was plenty of room and Mitch was happy to share.
Yeah, 7:30 is pretty late is pretty late. Definitely makes me feel bad for using arriving in the dark as an excuse to not go out.
Absolutely spectacular! (except for the leeches ha) Those birds calling in the background were magnificent. Thank you for sharing your hike.
Thanks for the kind words and for watching Leah. Regards Paul
yeah the bird song wow !
