      Connie Gage ,
Dr. Leo trusts the bees as well . Stay quiet and calm and the bees will stay quiet and calm also . I have seen so many people get so agitated when a honey bee is around and begin swinging and batting at it until finally the bee does become agitated enough to sting them. Then the people will say see? If they would stay calm , the honey bee would just fly away because they are after all , not flowers.

When my husband and I were much younger, we managed a little golf course and drive range. As payment, we lived in an apartment (that was attached to the Pro shop) with water, electric, heat, and garbage all taken care of by the owners. It was difficult to get much sleep there, however, after 4 am because the masses of birds around the place would get so LOUD about then. The golf course was surrounded by beautiful woods, looking like a virtual paradise. So my husband would get up from time to time and yell, “SHUUUUUUUUT UUUUUUUP!” at the birds. Then they would. Hahahahaha! Eventually, the birds learned not to bug us so much to where he didn’t have to go out and yell at them anymore.

My Dad kept bees like his father before him. Growing up I have fond memories working with the bees, retrieving swarms from trees & old houses. We always hand pressed the comb and strained it with a wire strainer so as not to filter out too much of the good stuff. After not having bees (or honey as I remember it) for 35 years or so, I just retired and I ordered a Nuc box from Dr. Leo’s site-it is very strong and well constructed. Currently it’s sitting in a tree at the edge of a field waiting on a swarm which I hope will happen soon as there were scout bees checking it out when I put in the base comb and as I was strapping it to the tree! Thanks for all these informative videos and Dr. Leo’s expertise.

      Debbie Simonson ,
Most people are allergic to insect bites to some extent. Some people more than others. Not long ago I had a friend at my home. She had a spider on her blouse and was freaking out. It was a pretty good sized spider. I plucked it off of her blouse and the darned thing bit me ! Which hurt ! A lot !! However , the pain from the bite only lasted for five or ten minutes and went away. My first time being bitten by a spider. Another time while riding a motorcycle near an orange grove ( orange blossom honey ) a honey bee flew under my collar. It did not sting me until I tried to brush it out from my collar. Then it stung me on the side of my neck. I expected a large welt that would last for hours. Instead the welt was about the thickness and size of a dime. Gone in half an hour. As I have said , some people more than others.

Absolutely fascinating!! Thank you for sharing. I was raised as a child on a Minnesota Dairy Farm. Our farmhouse had a natural bee hive that developed between the two story's of the house. It wasn't until we saw the honey combs developing within the ceiling light fixtures that it was decided that something had to be done. A member of our 4-H Club was a beekeeper. He helped us by causing the hive to swarm. The swarm went to the top of a nearby very tall cedar tree. I will never forget seeing the treetop bending over from the sheer weight of the bees. The queen was eventually captured, along with the majority of the swarm. They also went into the eves of the house and removed hundreds of pounds of honey comb. The hive never totally disappeared. There were still enough bees to sing me to sleep at night.

I'm a first year beekeeper from Springfield, MO. I found out about Dr. Leo from watching your videos.
One thing I've learned in my first year so far is how complicated keeping bees in a Langstroth can be. Our club president Likes to say, "Ask the same question to 10 beekeepers and you will get 10 different answers."
As you would imagine, this makes beekeeping very intimidating to the new person. It's also increases the barrier to entry between the difficulty and the expense of Langstroth hives. All of this to have a greater risk of losing your hives over winter.
Anyway, I'm not saying it shouldn't be done this way, but it does feel like a honey first approach versus a bee first approach, which is why I have been listening to everything I can find from Dr. Leo. The things he talks about make so much sense to me and it removes a lot of the variables that can lead to failure.
Dr Leo. Thank you for being such a good advocate for the bees and for inspiring new beekeepers to not give up. I really do hope to come to one of your events some day and absorb as much knowledge as possible. From one Ozarkian to another. Thank you!
