  • Doug and Stacy live in a log cabin like the Pioneers. Today Dr Leo visits the farm and we inspect the horizontal hives that we installed last year. This is the first time we open the bee hives in 2020 and we compare the wild swarm we caught vs the weak hive we re queened last year. Thanks for watching and please share the video so we can get the message out about natural bee keeping!

About OFF GRID with DOUG and STACY:
We moved to our 11 acres in 2011 from a large city in the Midwest with zero carpentry and farming skills. We live with no solar / wind power / public water or well. We share our adventure to a sustainable life, growing our own food from vegetables to meat. We post videos DAILY and they range from HOW TO to EVERYDAY LIFE and NUTRITION on the off grid homestead. We were city folks just like you probably and wanted to enjoy life and have more control over our food. We share food recipes as well as natural remedies.

Ok, I am half way through this video, I am not a homesteader, or a farmer, I live in SoCal in a city, and I am ABSOLUTELY FASCINATED by this video!!! I am completely amazed and I can clearly see the energetic differences between the two colonies, coloring of the bees aside!!! Thank you Dr. Leo for such a comprehensive explanation of the thought and process behind what you are doing!!!! It’s so nice when experts break it all down to the non-expert or novice level. This is what a loving dedicated to cause person does, he makes the extended effort to do so because he’s doing it for humanity at large. That kind of love and dedication is FOR REAL and INVALUABLE!!!!

If you want to keep bees, you can have up to 2 hives in the City of LA as long as you're zoned as a single family residence. This became legal because of a massive push by urban beekeepers in the area led by Honeylove. It was already legal in Santa Monica and a few other cities in SoCal so if you actually want to keep them, check your local ordinances. It's totally doable in SoCal.

how about trying solitary and friendly mason and leafcutter bees for your garden? Look into whatever solitary bees are native to your area. I keep them on a small town lot, only about 20 of them and my kids pick them up and play with them! They are actually much better polinators then honey bees, don't live in hives they have to defend so they are non aggressive. Frankly I think they are cute little guys!

These videos, with Dr Leo, were the last little push I needed to make the decision to go horizontal. In Florida, I have struggled with keeping bees in the langstroth hives. I have been researching more natural ways of bee keeping because I instinctively knew there had to be a better way for the bees!! I believe the horizontal hive is that way!! I want to thank you very much for taking the time to put these videos together - it’s been very very helpful.

Thank you for a wonderful video! I have kept bees for 9 years and love that I learn something every time I visit the hives. It can be frustrating to find so much conflicting info about beekeeping out there but Dr. Leo's information always makes so much sense and he presents it in a way that I can remember and really use when working with my bees. Thanks again!

How informative! This has been several firsts for me: seeing how a hive is conjested and can cause swarming, discovering that bees are divided into different job classes because of age, learning about queen development, hearing how they maintain warmth in the hive, and too many technical aspects to mention but were all enjoyable. Thank you Dr. Leo. Thank you Doug for filming the whole process. Didn't mind the length at all!

THAT....was a 'WEALTH' of information and WELL DONE visually! I gotta say it is something I would like to see 'others' do as it gives me the 'heebie geebies'! I found myself lowering the sound of the buzzing, swatting and scratching myself = YIKES! Thanks for all your time/patience/sharing and Dr. Leo is a very respectful beekeeper = best I have ever watched. Health and God's Blessing on you n'yours!
