- Doug and Stacy live in a log cabin like the Pioneers. Today Dr Leo visits the farm and we inspect the horizontal hives that we installed last year. This is the first time we open the bee hives in 2020 and we compare the wild swarm we caught vs the weak hive we re queened last year. Thanks for watching and please share the video so we can get the message out about natural bee keeping!

About OFF GRID with DOUG and STACY:
We moved to our 11 acres in 2011 from a large city in the Midwest with zero carpentry and farming skills. We live with no solar / wind power / public water or well. We share our adventure to a sustainable life, growing our own food from vegetables to meat. We post videos DAILY and they range from HOW TO to EVERYDAY LIFE and NUTRITION on the off grid homestead. We were city folks just like you probably and wanted to enjoy life and have more control over our food. We share food recipes as well as natural remedies. - Zábava

Love this video. Thank you Dr. Leo for giving us a great learning experience. Absolutely love bees and so happy for all you do for us Doug and Stacy. What a ride.
thanks to Dr. Leo and you for providing the info
Thanks Tommy
I do not keep bees. Yet here I am. Your bee videos with Dr. Leo are fantastic.
I was lucky enough to have a swarm move straight into a baited horizontal hive in early March. So far, my girls are happy and healthy, and multiplying like crazy!
That is a cool moniker, last name Christmas? You had a personal Christmas when you caught that swarm!
This man is amazing... besides being a bee expert.. he's really a very nice guy that's willing to help anyone interested in bee keeping...
⁰ⁿ
@Yo Mama so are most of us bee keeper😁. You should meet him- he's great!
A bee expert wouldn't torture bees by untreating them , and allowing them to swarm by negligence
@keeper01: Sorry I'm new to the subject. Could you elaborate plz? What is "untreating"? and why does it torture bees? And "swarm by negligence" I've never heard that term.

Ok, I am half way through this video, I am not a homesteader, or a farmer, I live in SoCal in a city, and I am ABSOLUTELY FASCINATED by this video!!! I am completely amazed and I can clearly see the energetic differences between the two colonies, coloring of the bees aside!!! Thank you Dr. Leo for such a comprehensive explanation of the thought and process behind what you are doing!!!! It’s so nice when experts break it all down to the non-expert or novice level. This is what a loving dedicated to cause person does, he makes the extended effort to do so because he’s doing it for humanity at large. That kind of love and dedication is FOR REAL and INVALUABLE!!!!

My 13yro keeps two hives and her grandfather runs an Apiary.
I agree! It takes a special kind of intelligence to convey detailed information on a complex subject and make it easy for regular folks to digest. This was a great video!
Everything she said I agree with....seriously, some great great videos!! Thank you.
If you want to keep bees, you can have up to 2 hives in the City of LA as long as you're zoned as a single family residence. This became legal because of a massive push by urban beekeepers in the area led by Honeylove. It was already legal in Santa Monica and a few other cities in SoCal so if you actually want to keep them, check your local ordinances. It's totally doable in SoCal.
Thanks Dr Leo for making that drive!!!
Thanks Doug and thank you, Dr Leo. 🐝🌸
I am sure that Stacey made a marvelous dinner for both Dr. Leo and her equally amazing husband tonight!!!! Great job for all the effort on everyone’s behalf in creating this, deeply detailed video!!!! GOOD ON YA MATE!!!
When I watch these videos, it makes me even more happy to pay the higher prices for local honey, at the produce stands around me. These people raising bees and selling the honey are very dedicated and put a lot of work into the product they harvest.
Plus it keeps small businesses alive❤
Thank you Dr. Leo for a very informative class.
Thank you Doug and Dr. Leo for all of these beekeeping videos. Pure gold.
Wow!! You are blessed with tons of bees.
Dr Leo is a very smart man and a huge asset to beekeeping.
Thank God for people like the two of you. I am respectful of bees and snakes, but I don't want them near me. I have pollinator plants, but I try to stay away from the bees. At least I have finally learned how to be calm and not scream and run from bees and snakes. LOL
how about trying solitary and friendly mason and leafcutter bees for your garden? Look into whatever solitary bees are native to your area. I keep them on a small town lot, only about 20 of them and my kids pick them up and play with them! They are actually much better polinators then honey bees, don't live in hives they have to defend so they are non aggressive. Frankly I think they are cute little guys!
These videos, with Dr Leo, were the last little push I needed to make the decision to go horizontal. In Florida, I have struggled with keeping bees in the langstroth hives. I have been researching more natural ways of bee keeping because I instinctively knew there had to be a better way for the bees!! I believe the horizontal hive is that way!! I want to thank you very much for taking the time to put these videos together - it’s been very very helpful.
28 minutes in and I need Ft Knox to store all the Gold Nuggets!!!!!!!!
😂😂😂😂😂♥️
That was fascinating have to watch it again . Thanks Dr Leo.
Dr Leo is the man! Thank you so much for pouring out your bee wisdom into all of our computer/phone screens ❤️
Dr.Leo is amazing. I learned so much from him. Thank you Doug and Stacy for showing him on your channel I would of not known about him. Much blessings to all of you. Much love ❤️
Awesome video Doug and Thank You Dr. Leo! I can't get enough of these Bee Videos and the wealth of information that Dr. Leo has. Thank you so much Doug for being a platform of this wealth for us to have and learn and propagate this wisdom down throughout generations to keep Bee Keeping Alive and Prosperous!!
Have my trap out, but nothing yet. Can't wait to get to see Dr. Leo and All the other speakers in August.
When you actually have a domicile which bees see as viable, they will move in. Chances are you are offering something too small or with obstructions (frames)
When he used that smoker, sounds like a big dog is around :D
Dr. Leo's visits are always so educational! I love all the information, Thankyou Dr. Leo!
Thank you Doug for having Dr Leo show us about bees. Thank you Dr Leo for the incredible bee keeping information. This was an excellent video. I hope to have bees on my farm by next year and I will be sure to use the methods shown here. I can't wait to buy the books. Thank you again. I very much enjoy Off Grid with Doug and Stacy. Much love and peace to Doug, Stacy and Dr. Leo.
So calming, I could watch Dr. Leo Beekeep all day. Get like one of those TV screen videos rollin along like fish or fireplaces. Thank ypu Dr. Leo and Doug and Stacy.
That first hive was like WOW.... many thousands, so intense. I really love learning from Dr Leo and Doug! Thanks for being you!
Thank you Dr Leo for helping the bees, and us!!!
Thanks Dr. Leo for spending the time with us.
Thanks, Dr. Leo. I’m not a beekeeper, but after our move, I will contact the county beekeeping association for beekeepers in our area who set up hives on private properties. We will be near heavy forestation - a small state park borders our property - so I feel beekeeping would be a natural fit. Dr. Leo, you’ve lit the fire; I’m going to stoke it. Happy beekeeping, everyone!
Thank you Doug and Dr. Leo. All of your informative information brought a smile to my face.
I agree. Dr. Leo knows his stuff about the bees. Thanks for sharing Doug and Stacy!
Thanks, Dr. Leo!!! And of course Thank you Doug and Stacy!
I love love love when Dr. Leo is at the homestead! I loved seeing the queen cells. SO cool! I can’t wait to see how the splits are doing. 🐝🐝
Thanks for sharing I started bee keeping in Jamaica I'm going to build some horizontal hives.i will keep in touch
I have 10 large mango trees and 20 coconut trees 🌴lots of food for the bees. We call the yard Plant Paradise
Hey Doug and Stacy... We just made our first hive. It is a horizontal hive, thanks to your informative videos with Dr. Leo. Thank you for your commitment to the bees and their future. For the future of your marriage... you can shrink your fingers using windex and not lose your ring if you get stung!! God bless, my friends.
I've managed horizontal hives. Having two or three nuc boxes identical to your long hive can be a real life saver. The long hives get swarmy quickest and if you are prepared ... the neighborhood don't stress out as much.
Windex does not shrink your fingers, lol. It just acts as a lubricant in order to pull the ring off easier. You can do the same job with any lubricant.
Dr Leo is the absolute best. Just I wish I could have bees on the property here.....but it’s just not possible......love this vid so many nuggets.
I saw a blog from an urban beekeeper that had a hive in his backyard and said to allow 2 feet around it then the bees will go straight up and out.
nothing is impossible, you just have to get away fron the key board and do it, if i let city by laws stop me when i was in my teens back in the early 70's i would be feeding the hungry today and i heed hundreds every year, for one to sit there and say it is not possible, it just a huge cop out not to do anything
Some people argue the bees in an urban area do better than a rural area because of the variety of forage in town as opposed to ‘monoculture’ that may be common in some rural areas.
I say extra thank you . I throughly enjoyed this . And will be going to his site. My Grandmother could find a hive in a tree and stick her hand in and get the honeycomb and every drop of honey out without a sting . As a kid this fascinated me . I once asked her if she was going to lick the tree ? I used to love to watch her . And I really would like to learn all about bee keeping as I want to do it myself .
Freelander your post about your grandmother reaching inside a wild hive to break off a piece of honey comb reminds me of the vivacious Bee Charmer in the movie, Fried Green Tomatoes
I can’t thank you guys enough for this and other very informative videos on horizontal beekeeping. It is difficult to find content on this subject beyond just setting up. It’s very helpful to see your follow up videos and actual experience. Thank you again.
In my opinion you got the perfect man for your tutorial I'd learned a whole lot and I thought I already knew a fair amount kudos congratulations
If you believe this video as correct for bees, it is the exact opposite for the general good of honeybees. (Just listen to their protests to the human induced collapse)
@@TheBellmare LOL, Where are your videos showing how it should be done?
@@jay90374 I do not engage in any activities which put honeybees in jeopardy. There are plenty of videos (students of conservation have taken) floating around of the "cause of death" clinics which I conduct. Perhaps you might benefit from something like that if your snarky ego would allow you.
Such an interesting and knowledgeable man. Fascinating.
Hey Doug hey Stacy thank you for the video and thank you to your friend there too because I enjoyed the video and happy Veterans Day Doug if you were in the service thank you for your service I appreciate it

Thanks Dr. Leo and Doug & Stacy that was very informative.
I just spent 3 weeks watching almost all your videos up to this one. Your bee vids with Dr Leo are awesome. All the others are great also. Love watching thanks for sharing.
Thank you for a wonderful video! I have kept bees for 9 years and love that I learn something every time I visit the hives. It can be frustrating to find so much conflicting info about beekeeping out there but Dr. Leo's information always makes so much sense and he presents it in a way that I can remember and really use when working with my bees. Thanks again!
Thanks Dr Leo and Doug! These videos are priceless! ❤
How informative! This has been several firsts for me: seeing how a hive is conjested and can cause swarming, discovering that bees are divided into different job classes because of age, learning about queen development, hearing how they maintain warmth in the hive, and too many technical aspects to mention but were all enjoyable. Thank you Dr. Leo. Thank you Doug for filming the whole process. Didn't mind the length at all!
Excellent! thank you so much for bringing Dr Leo back :)
Loved this video, the pure joy Dr. Leo exhibits is great!!!
Thanks for having Dr. Leo on I have been learning a lot from his books. You need to have this guy on more often. Good going.
Thanks Doug and Dr.Leo ! Love this information and hands on instruction!

Thanks both of you for the awesome videos and fantastic information you generously give.
Thanks so much, Dr. Leo. You really know your stuff.
So far this is my favorite video so far! Thank you both ❤️
THAT....was a 'WEALTH' of information and WELL DONE visually! I gotta say it is something I would like to see 'others' do as it gives me the 'heebie geebies'! I found myself lowering the sound of the buzzing, swatting and scratching myself = YIKES! Thanks for all your time/patience/sharing and Dr. Leo is a very respectful beekeeper = best I have ever watched. Health and God's Blessing on you n'yours!
💚👍🐝👌❤️🐾🗝
Yay! Congrats Doug on the new hives! I hope they thrive well. So exciting and fascinating to watch you and Dr. Leo work together with the care of the hives. Love it! Thank you for sharing.
